Doom (2016) PC performance thread

Running pretty well here, all things considered, at least during the opening segments (the game just finished installing). Does it get any more hectic later on, or is performance pretty consistent throughout?

i7-2600K @ 3.4GHz
16GB DDR3
GTX-680 2GB
Win10

Most things on Medium-High, 1080p, TSSAA, getting about 45-55fps. G-sync keeps it smooth. Feels good.

Gets more demanding. Im curious to know if your settings are above ps4

Fullscreen and v-sync set to off, I'm still locked to 60 FPS.

Something is not right there.

I have the exact same specs, except for 2500k at 4.5, and I'm getting a solid 60 at 1440p maxed out.

Try clean installing the drivers.

I'm going to assume you can force compatibility by using the Rage bit, but I haven't been following along in this thread so there could be a better solution.

In Steam:
Right click your game and click Properties -> General -> Set Launch Options

+com_skipIntroVideo 1 +vt_MaxPPF 128 +vt_pageImageSizeVmtr "16384" +vt_pageImageSizeVmtrUnique 16384 +r_displayRefresh 144

Edit: Note that the menus are still capped at 60, but this will unlock your FPS for in-game.

Already tried that. Game runs perfect for a minute or so and then it goes all the way down.

Run verify cache from Steam for the game. IIRC, someone else complained about low FPS and verifying cache fixed that. At least it won't do damage..

Will try that, thanks.

my fps went from ~32ish (in the room where the game starts) to around 70 after updating to the 16.5.2.1 drivers, just an FYI for any amd users. I'm on a 7870.

Mine still drops though after a bit of playing the game. Obviously some scenes may be more taxing than others but even after combat is over or sitting still it doesn't return to 60-75

Anyone else have that issue?

Hey guys,

So I'm a real newbie when it comes to PC gaming. I just picked myself up a laptop the other day, and I grabbed DOOM for pretty cheap. The specs I'm running are:

i7-6700HQ CPU
8GB DDR3L Memory
NVIDIA GeForce 950M GPU

I can run DOOM on all Medium default setting, vsync off, AA all off, and get 60FPS. The native resolution of the laptop is 1920x1080 however I can only run it at lower (usually 1368x768) if I want to keep at above 30-40FPS.

My question was really do you have any suggestions for improving performance in 1920x1080 or if I can make it look any better than what I'm using currently, while keeping the steady FPS? Thanks a lot!

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do. The 950m, while a nice card, is severely limited by the fact that it uses DDR3 instead of GDDR5, which means it's slower and has far less memory bandwidth. You can try dumping all settings to low but I highly doubt it'd help much, plus everything would look terrible.

If you can find a laptop with at least a 960m that's the same price or near it and exchange it, that'd be my suggestion. Especially if you want to get into PC gaming any further, because I think you'll just end up regretting that 950m.

Edit: Looks like the 950m may come with GDDR5 but its only a 10-20% improvement. The 960m is still leagues above that, so I stand by my suggestion.

So I've managed to get the game running on this:

i5-3570K
8GBs RAM
1GB Radeon HD6870

Yep, you read that right. But I had to install the latest AMD drivers. Even though they're technically not compatible with HD6000 GPUs and older, they worked somehow, whereas the most recent legacy driver didn't (the game would crash instantly).

Now, obviously the game is not a looker. It's even hard to distinguish the enemies sometimes. I had to put everything on low, turn off everything that could be turned off, set the resolution to 720p with 70% internal resolution, and the game is still not running at a stable 60fps. More like 30-60 fps.

Point is: it's playable, even on a 4-year-old GPU... from AMD, with incompatible drivers.

I've had the game just turn itself off three times since launch. I suppose it's crashing but it's crazy how I got absolutely no warning. The game's there one second, gone the next. No errors, no processes stuck in Not Responding, nothing.

Titan X, latest WHQL drivers.

I've reached the Argent Tower level in the game and I've gotten two crashes in that level so far.

Don't know what's up. Game's been working fine before that level.

Game is running great

6600K @4.4GHz
16GB DDR4 @3GHz
7970 @1GHz

AMD 16.5.2.1

Getting 60fps with 16.66 frame times pretty much all the time. I'm running mostly high settings with a couple medium. I could probably move some setting up, but I'm happy where I'm at visually and I've hit 95%+ GPU usage a couple of times so I don't want to get drops.

Performance before the driver hotfix was pretty bad. All the reviews seem to focus on the 390/390X improvements, but it definitely helped out my 7970 as well.

Anyone else losing music? I thought it was just for effect but it kept up for a while. I restarted my computer, loaded my save and it was back. ..then went away again after I died.

This is annoying.

edit: And now it's back. <3 PC gaming <3

Hm, if I die I sit at a frozen loading screen now when reloading checkpoints. Lame.

This still happens to me randomly. Die and stare at a black screen with a frozen loading icon in the top right. Really fucks with the flow of the game having to manually close the game and go back in.

What are the chances this game gets bundled with some 1080s from board partners next month?
I don't think we will. for two reasons.

1. Doom 4 is bundled right now with Asus Mainboards and monitors but not graphic cards. So if you are thinking about upgrading your mobo/cpu or monitor now is a good time... sort of.

2. Normally we don't get nvidia gpu + game bundles right at the start of a new generation.

Yeah when this happens, all I have to do is back out the main menu and reload, actually I've reloaded a checkpoint and got the audio back, so always try that.

Edit: forgot to post, since I haven't posted an update in here I don't think. Game runs great and looks fantastic on my rig, mind you the newest part in it is the 980 which I got like a year ago or so when I had the cash.

Core i5 2500k @ 4.5GHZ
GTX980 @ stock
12GB of DDR3 1600 ram

I'm getting really great frame rates, usually in excess of 100 Fps(dips to 80-90 extremely rarely), and in some scenarios as high as 140 fps. I'd say the average is right around 100 or so. Current Nvidia drivers. all Ultra settings.

What resolution? Impossible for us to have context without knowing the biggest performance factor.

is there anyway to disable camera motion blur without also disabling OBMB?

There could be via a start up / console command. I will check out the exe when I return home later.

Not all engines have motion blur done in a manner where you can have one but not the other always though.

At about Chapter 5, been playing 1080p on Ultra and had locked 60 fps.

Specs:

Gtx 970
i5 4670
8gb Ram

Really happy with how this is running so far.

The AA on this is very impressive. I've not noticed any jaggies.

I have this running on Ultra on a GTX 970 using a 21:9 widescreen resolution and it runs perfectly.

So glad I got this on PC.

So hold off on this game until the issues are sorted then?

If you buy the game on Steam, you can refund it if it's playing up in some way. Most people aren't having any trouble.

Plus to the best of my knowledge Bethesda hasn't participated in a GPU bundle since Morrowind.

its highly unlikely i know. camera motion blur just sucks if playing at higher fps

I had a ton of issues with Wolfenstein. The game would work perfectly one day, super smooth with high frame rates, and then the performance would go to shit and nothing could fix it. Even turning the settings all the way to low would still give me stuttering and problems. The only fix would be to reinstall the game but after a few days the same thing would happen. I even tried one last time after moving from Windows 7 to Windows 10 (Fresh install) Had to do that 4 times before I finally gave up on it. Did anyone else have issues with Wolfenstein that now has Doom? and if so how is it going.

What resolution were you trying and did you use texture compression or not? The game can consume more than 4GB VRAM if you're playing 2560x1440 or above and choose not to use texture compression. Especially if you enable MSAA using console or launch commands.
I'd also recommend removing drivers for the iGPU or disabling it in motherboard BIOS.

That's kinda awesome really.

Reminds me of how people hacked Doom 3 to run on Voodoo (2?)...

I think it's a testament to how computer graphics, computer parts and resource requirements have evolved. I highly doubt I would have been able to play a cutting-edge game from 2003 with a mid-range GPU from 1999. But maybe I'm remembering wrong.

But to be fair, I think it's due in large part to how good Intel CPUs are nowadays. Ever since the i5-CPU 2500K, it's amazing how these chips have been holding up. My i5-3570K still feels like it can handle most things I can throw at it. Same goes for RAM: 8GB has been more than enough for most applications for years.

I played with a lot of settings (I should have mentioned that changing the settings is what usually broke the game) but I was able to play 4K at medium settings and get 60fps with no problem and once the stuttering would start even going down to 1080p medium wouldn't get rid of the stutters.

What anti aliasing has been established as the best? I don't want to blur the image too much at all...

8xTSSAA does a wonderful job and it seems to be relatively cheap, but it blures the image a bit, still it's worth a try.
The best solution (image quality wise) is to use SMAA and to downsample to your native resolution. E.g. on my gtx 980 I'm able to downsample from 2400x1350 to 1080p with ultra settings and SMAA, fps never drop below ~68fps (in between 92 - 75 most of the time).

I'll ask here as well.
Has anyone managed to connect to Multiplayer in the PC version? I can't seem to find any players either in Multiplayer and SnapMap

Just in case somebody cares:

76fps vs. 45fps / 280X vs. GTX770. Damn, the 770 didn't age well. Should've gone with the 280X back then. Must be the 2GB VRAM or I don't know what else...

Hmm maybe I'll try the AA. I'm already playing at 1440p so I feel like if I try to downsample my fps is gonna take a nose dive-- especially since SLI doesnt work.

I'm interested in buying DOOM. I got a Dell XPS 15 laptop with the following specs:

CPU: i7 - 6700HQ @ 2.6 GHz
GPU: GTX 960M
RAM: 16 GB
Screen: 1920 x 1080
Windows 10

What kind of settings (Full HD / Medium / High etc.) would these specs merit?

Appreciate the help, if someone has experience with similar specs!

Any word on when Vulkan support will be implemented?

Man this game looks crisp and runs beautifully. You can tell they cut corners in order to achieve a higher framerate with a lot of effects, but still awesome nonetheless. Very impressed.

It's the VRAM (well, mostly):

I made a couple of videos/benchmarks out of boredom at work showing performance on this game on a GTX 960, and on a GTX 980 (NOTEBOOK). I hope they get to help a couple people out, specially because the 960 with 2 GBs struggles while the 4GB does not.

Hey, at work I have laptops with the same specs, I'll TRY and convince the bosses to get Doom on these laptops as well and come back to you, but it would take me 3-4 days, the internet sucks here. I've been working and testing games on a desktop with a reference 960 (2GB), and to get 60fps or 50-60fps I gotta run it on Medium. The 960M is slower than a desktop 960, so that will probably help you. By the way, it will make a HUGE difference if your 960M has 2GB or 4GB, as the game will cap those 2GBs even on High.

Note the difference between 960 2GB and 4GB here:

I can confirm this as well, and ALL the 3 videos I posted above show this. There's a huge difference between both 960s. Huge. The 2GB even stutters on Ultra at 1080p. It stutters pretty badly.

OK, I got a 22% discount on GMG for season pass decreasing it $31 from $39. What do you think ? Does anyone know if they will add single player content at all ? Steam page only says :

Get the DOOM Season Pass and continue to expand your multiplayer experience with three new, premium DLC packs. DLCs will include new multiplayer maps, weapons, equipment, playable demons, custom armor sets, Hack Modules, taunts, and more.

For some mp only stuff isn't this a bit high ? After all this is not battlefield series.

These crashes out of nowhere are fucking annoying.

Has there been any sort of official acknowledgment of the crashes? I'm assuming if there was I would have seen it in here though...it's really something that needs to be fixed asap. Everyone I know playing this game is having the random crashes to desktop.

Awesome, thanks a bunch -bakalhau-! I have the 2GB version 960M. The laptop might not be a gaming powerhouse, but it's super for lightweight casual gaming. Which suits me just fine.

The videos you posted are also quite insightful. I'm guessing a solid 40+ fps on medium settings for my XPS 15.
