Doom (2016) PC performance thread

Is there a way to disable weapon aim slowdown? By that I mean that some weapons will have a slower turn rate in secondary fire mode. Also, the plasma rifle seems to have a slower turn rate while firing. It's really annoying.

I cannot say i notice the slowdown, but then i have relatively high DPI setting on my mouse and boosted in-game sensitivity to 6.6. Unsure if design decision though.

Plasma rifle turn rate while firing is most likely a design decision, i figure the weapon is meant for frontal assaults.

(In case it is not obvious, no, you cannot disable either thing.)

I was getting 60 fps with drops to 40 fps at the worst case but after taking a couple days break from the game I'm now getting 30 fps with drops to 20 fps. I haven't changed anything with the game or my computer. Using a 970gtx and 5820K on Ultra settings.

I don't understand what could have happened to cause this. Maybe one of the Ultra settings wasn't getting applied and now it magically got applied? Was there an update to the game that changed something?

With a 970 your framerate should be locked to 60, there must be something wrong, try changing to High settings and back to ultra, that works for me sometimes, or close The game and open again.

1080p is the resolution of my monitor, I'm intending on downsampling. I'm at borderless, as well, I'll switch to fullscreen and see if that changes anything.
This is a general limitation for basically every single game that exists. Borderless and windowed have to run @ your desktop resolution or lower. Only with Fullscreen can you take advantage of DSR / VSR downsampling. Switch to fullscreen.
Can't do downsampling in-game, i think.

Of course you can.

I thought I read somewhere you can't pick above your native res and res scaling only goes to 100% (in game options)? Good to know though I didn't try since my PC isn't that great.

Use the resolution option, not the res scaling option. :D

i.e. the game in its current form does not support its own method of internal downsampling available in the menu.

I lowered the resolution scale to 77%. and textures to low. The game looks significantly ugly and the framerate fluctuates from 57~60 (Even in fights) and 40 or less in high smoke areas.

770 GTX, i5 4670k.

Edit: I restarted the game and it stopped dipping bad in heavy smoked areas.

Can someone explain what the resolution scale does? Is the best option to leave it at 100%? I got a 980ti paired with a i7 5820k over clocked

From what I understand, It lowers the game's resolution and upscales it to your monitor.

It scales the resolution the game internally renders at, before it displays the HUD most likely. So anything lower than 100% will be lower than your native resolution.

With a 980 Ti you have no reason to touch it at most resolutions or framerate tagets. What is your display's native resolution and hz?

Runs wonderful for me

i7 6700K (stock)
16GB DDR4
Fury X

I'm playing in 1440p with everything set to ultra. Haven't touched the nightmare options. Disabled radar, CA and the awful monster glowing. AA is 8x TSSAA
I get between 60 and 100 fps depending on whats going on. (I have a freesync monitor)

I had 2 crashes to desktop without any warning until I realized I was running on old drivers (16.4). I have upgraded to 16.5.2.1 now and haven't had a crash in the last 2 hours.

6 hours total playtime.

I wonder if Vulkan can squeeze a few more frames out of the game.

Can you try finishing Argent Tower and tell if it crashes?
I had two crashes at the end of that map with those drivers, completely locking up my PC (had to do hard reset, which temporarily broke something in Windows).

Had to downgrade to 16.5.2.

That's the last mission I played and it didn't crash with the new drivers. I am now in
Hell

Also the crashes I had were not locking up my PC. It was just DOOM suddenly closing, there was no error message at all.

Hrmm. Might be R9 390 specific crash... or something for my PC make-up.

The crashes i've gotten on 16.5.2 drivers are like what you describe, but i've gotten only two. (Total play time on those drivers is something like 33h.)

Either way, i'm waiting for the proper release for the next drivers. 16.5.2.1 boost my performance a lot (15+fps, and that is after setting things to Ultra) but i don't want risk crashes that are as bad as what i got.

This whole game crashing to desktop bug is so strange.
It just started happening to me some days ago, I'd been playing the game lots and lots and it was as stable as as can be, but then suddenly at a later hell level it crashed to desktop and it's happened several times since then too.
Even at a level earlier in the game where it didn't happen before.
It's just so weird as I can't see that I've done anything that could cause it to start happening.

It happens to a lot of people with all sorts of configurations. It's just a bug.

Even at fullscreen no options higher than 1080p are available. Also, I swear I remember running Overwatch at 1440p, borderless.

Uh - huge issue. I cannot get to the first hell level. My game has a HARD crash to black screen and I need to reset my PC in order to restart the game. It does not save a checkpoint so I'm stuck having to do the final battle in the Argent Tower level forever.

It worked fine the first time I played it, not anymore. This is a second run on Nightmare.

Any ideas? PC is a 980, i5-4690k, W10, SSD and a mild OC crash happens without OC as well.

Yes, that's my issue but I have an Nvida GPU which was running fine until my second playthrough.

pretty sure im on the last level. feels great to play a SP fps thats actually fun. the last 2 i played were among the worst ever(black ops 3, bf4). the tech is awesome but the level art doesnt match up IMO. very inconsistent materials. the animation with all the PP, lights and particles is awesome to revel in. quality animation goes a long way. wish more game developers would realize this.

I was just having the same problem earlier today, did a quick search and someone mentioned running the game in windowed mode which worked for me, got the level completed screen then switched back to fullscreen after.

Just got this for my wife. She was crashing at the Bethesda logo. Updated the drivers and now it runs perfectly. She's running an i5-4690k, 8GB, 770 GTX.

Same - tried that earlier and the problem was avoided.

Perhaps expectedly my ancient GTX670 runs like a dog at 1080p (w/medium settings, which were the defaults). Fluctuates wildly between 25-45fps, dropping to mid teens in some areas making it completely unplayable. I'd drop the settings even lower but it looks like ass as it is.

Not sure whether to play the game in smudge-o-vision or wait a few weeks and upgrade to a new card - it such a damn good game :(

GTX970, and I was getting some odd frame drops down to around 45 on ultra in one area on the second level. I upgraded my drivers and it seemed to go away. Anyone else have a similar issue?

Has there been any sort of official acknowledgment of the crashes? I'm assuming if there was I would have seen it in here though...it's really something that needs to be fixed asap. Everyone I know playing this game is having the random crashes to desktop.

Recently bought the game and so far I've experienced 1 abrupt crash to desktop (No errors displayed).

Is it happening to both Nvidia & AMD users?

Running an R9 290X / 16.5.2.1 driver, the game runs way better than I imagined considering my old timey CPU, i7 920 oc'd 3.5Ghz (1080P/60fps on High preset, haven't tried Ultra yet), I've only seen the fps briefly drop below 60 a couple times.

Just got my first desktop crash after 15 hrs or so. Was playing, then all of a sudden, the game just terminated, and I was staring at my desktop. No errors or anything. The game just closed out immediately, and I was looking at my desktop. LOL - never seen a bug like this before. I'm on a 980 ti.

I'm so torn over this game right now... I'm running at lower-than-native res, at Medium settings, and only getting about 40fps or so. I want to hold off for a bit until I get a 1080 here in a couple months, so I can play it as it's meant to be played, but... the game is SO DAMN GOOD.

Still not going over 60 FPS.

Here are my launch options
+set m_smooth 0 +m_smoothing 0 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +vt_MaxPPF 128 +vt_pageImageSizeVmtr "16384" +vt_pageImageSizeVmtrUnique 16384 +r_displayRefresh 144 +com_skipKeyPressOnLoadScreens 1

EDIT lol, it's randomly working

Are you trying to DSR? For some reason I've noticed that when I try to enable a DSR res mid game it locks the refresh rate to 60hz. I imagine that if you close the game after enabling a DSR res then start it back up it'll jump back to 144hz tho.

I'm actually not using DSR, just my monitor's native resolution (1440p). The 970 can barely handle that above 60 at this point.

I feel dumb, finally figured out my performance issues were related to my card getting too hot (around 95-96 degrees). I cleaned out some of my filters, moved my card and moved some other things around. My card maxes out around 75 degrees now and not getting any more frame drops anymore.

r9 290 4gb
i5 4690k
16gb RAM

On mostly high with a few mediums, getting mostly 60fps with a few dips but I've only been in like two rooms so far.

Any settings I can turn down with minimal impact to visuals?

i5 4690, 3.50ghz
GTX 970
16gb RAM

Getting frame rate drops frequently. I'm ven to the point where the game stops for a second and then judders into gameplay. It's weird, when I first started the game it was fine and it's pregressively got worse. I've bumped settings down to medium and even down to everything on low and it seems to make no difference.

I'm kinda new to PC stuffs, HELP ME GAF!

Of course you can.

It works on borderless window if you change the desktop resolution.

Sounds like the same memory leak problem I am having with the game. I have to restart my pc every hour because the framerate gets really bad. I am not sure what causes it or how to fix it.

You could just get an Nvidia GPU, like 80% of other gamers...

Eh, I already bought the R9 Nano priorhand, which is why I mentioned that card specifically. (Seems to me the issue is mostly fixed in Crimson 16.5.2.1)

I don't get why so many GAFers are shilling me on the Nvidia when I have an AMD build currently.

gtx 970
I7 870 @ 2,93 ghz
8 GB ram
High preset

I get an almost stable 1080p60, with a few frame drops to 55 at points. The worst area for now was the beginning of level 3 after you walk through the door and look over the big lava room. There it drops to 50. Are there any area's worse then that?

Its just noise. With a Nano you are better than 90% of them.
