This is fantastic.

Wow, the colored one is way way better than the official brown filtered one. That is one of my complaints, the monsters all blend into the background.
At first I thought it was just samey monster design and the lack of vibrancy and contrast were just adding to that. But these shots show that no, it's entirely the lack of vibrancy and contrast that is the problem.

Hehe, it's kind of funny that this is pretty much the opposite of what happened with Diablo III. Tons of petitions were started, was crazy.

It had a big effect on the game as well, the colors were a lot more muted in the end game I think.

That is exactly what I was thinking of as well.

Has SweetFX worked with Id's games in the past?

I imagine it would be very possible to make the game's colors look like the edited ones above if SweetFX is compatible. Hell, half of the SweetFX mods I've seen were saturated like mad. The other half desaturated.

On PC you can probably just use the numberbar to switch. Weapon wheel is just there for console players.

Yop, but i dlove for console being able to switch rapiditly with let say r1 and l1 to next and previous weapon without seeing the slowmo wheel. Wouldnt cut the action

Yeah. Those corrected shots are exactly what I want to see. Someone take this to the highest level at id. DOOM isn't just the gameplay, it's the look. And the original just had so much more color mixed in with the brown and grey. Will DOOM 4 have bright green slime or bright red blood pools and rivers? Will there be water, and will it be colorful or clear and realistic? It's all about the looks as well as the gameplay.

Hopefully someone will mod it in if we don't get it. Simple texture changes could be all it needs.

I know this has already been quoted a dozen times, but oh my GOD that looks great! Why, just why did they have to make the game so brown and gray!? The importance of color seems lost on so many developers these days.

Thankfully the game is still a long ways off, so perhaps if enough people complain about the colors (and send them that image comparison!) they'll try to change the visuals for the better?

The colour did also help a lot with the gameplay. The enemies in Doom contrast really well with their environment and had distinctive silhouettes so that it was really easy to tell what they were even when they were a 10 pixel splotch on the horizon. That's not as necessary anymore but that is still a huge part of the games' visual identity.

Not going to quote the pictures again, but I agree. The color corrected versions with actual red cacodemons and Doomguy's green armor make the game looks so much better and so much more DOOM.

well i guess this wins e3 for me, now that ive seen sonys reveals.

modding modding modding - i dont want another Rage tier disappointment.

This game looks like Gearbox's version of Duke Nukem Forever
How so? Because, i can see no resemblance whatsoever.

The "more color version" does look a lot better! I dont think they have to remove all the color grading, but making the enemies stick out more is a good thing.

yeah theres opengl support now. DOF in rage works better with sweetfx than the built in one

Even if id doesn't bother fixing the colours, those screens give me hope for some nice mods.

But id should really take a long look at those pictures.

I can't rightly say that I prefer one over the other. One looks more like Doom, but does not fit with the overall aesthetic. The other fits with the aesthetic but the colors are so muted the tone becomes dull.

I think that's a bit of the issue though - they fit in too well, but if you think about it, they should feel well out of place there. They're from a different world altogether, but they fit in like they belong in that shot.

In hell this obviously wouldn't be the case. Still, the yellow/brown color looks bad in my opinion. If they really want to go with an extreme color grading/cast, go with red then.

Inconsistencies in coloring and styles can also help to broaden the world itself. Not everything has to look like it comes from the same family, variation is nice. It just shouldn't become too disjointed.

Oh wow those altered doom colors. It looks so great and really do question if the developers know anything about colors.

If nothing else please allow mods.

HOLY SHIT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Devs correct the colors NOW

Doom = Grey, Red and Blue
Quake = Brown

Edit: How do i stop looking at the corrected colour screens? It's soooo beautiful, it's so... DOOM

This always makes me laugh.

Quake has color

Quake = Brown

This is not a bad way to put it, and I'm one of the biggest Quake 2 fans you'll ever find.

This always makes me laugh.

Quake has color

One could argue that Quake 1 was more green than brown, but still. Quake 2 was the original brown shooter and Quake 3 took it to the next level. Only Quake 4 fully subverted this trend by making everything shiny and metallic.

I actually like them both. hah

BTW, is anyone else having massive deja vus to some other thread we had about this same topic? I swear Derrick was involved... and Funky papa

That would be the Diablo 3 unveling back in the day. I was one of the dorks raging against Blizzard for injecting the WoW aesthetic into Diablo. Oddly enough, that was a case of a dev trying to make a dark and gritty game into something full of pastel textures and goofier enemies; so the precise opposite of this thread.

Hah. I knew this all was someohow familiar.

It has all happened before...
