Why do I find the main game so easy, but these Classic Maps are kicking my butt?
The classic maps are both harder and easier.
The first half will be a little hard because you just have the sucky pistol and enemies deal out a ton of damage. By the end of the level you should have more health and ammo than necessary though. Its all about finding the megaspheres.
So every time I launch this it freezes and reboots my PC before displaying anything. GTX 980, 4790k.
What do I do? I have reinstalled once already.
My suggestion for the pacing of the levels to be more consistent, cuz as is there's the 10/10 intensity crazy waves of enemies in locked rooms and then 2/10 intensity walking around hallways and platforms out of danger until you get to the next arena. If, like classic Doom(or really any old school action game), there was a more general level of engagement throughout the levels, the structure of the game wouldn't feel so repetitive, stop-start-stop-start-stop-start.
Grabbed this earlier this week based on the hype. It's delivering so far. The melee kills haven't gotten old for me yet, and they add some strategy when you need health. My only gripe so far is that it's hard to tell when you are being attacked.
Is it me or is the soundmix kind of weak? With headphones I feel like stuff is kind of far away from me. I can barely hear the explosions. Even the music is kind of on the low side. I'm not getting much "stereo" either.
Game's pretty fun otherwise. Hurt Me Plenty is pretty easy.
Yeah I can't tell enemy positions at all by sound.

Yeah, the mixing in the game is terrible. I already complained about this previously but it's almost impossible to hear enemies (even massive ones) coming up from behind yeah even if you're using headphones.

Oh god, Net_Wrecker, you'd love this shit, thoughThis is the main reason I'm holding off on buying the game right now. I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I get to it, but it's not "MUST PLAY IMMEDIATELY" because my favorite shooters are the ones that live in a more consistent middle ground intensity that know when to turn the volume up, but don't necessarily fluctuate from 0 to 10 every time. I have a strange relationship with arena-based shooter campaigns where I really have to be in the mood to play them or else I won't really appreciate it.
Just beat the single player campaign and have to say... amazing. Love the speed, fluid combat, and it was good ole FPS fun.
I don't like MP FPS so... this will be the platinum that got away since those are the only trophies left to get.
Bravo to Id. Now redo Hexen! The nostalgia will be complete.

However it sounds on paper, give it a shot
We also need to get our buddy Xtortionist in on this
Getting near the end. Very fun game, but really really really repetitive. Really could have had some sort of scenes to break up the gameplay cycle.
Kinda surprised people are losing their shit over this game. Its pretty good, but its only a few steps forward from Painkiller largely due to the movement options.
I feel like the game could really be incredible if they mixed in the pretty interesting codec stuff into the actual gameplay....like having one of the Doom Slayer histories play while you are fighting.
Dunno just felt like the game having the pedal to the metal the entire time can make some scenes feel less amazing than they are. Same issue I had with Vanquish.

But it's just... insanity. I run out of ammo quickly, every enemy is a damage sponge. It's like they put zero thought into these. It could have been much better with some nostalgic UI and at least the ability to bring past weapons into the later levels. Grr.
Adjust the difficulty accordingly. These classic maps are being filled with dudes that one, don't drop ammo, and two, are designed to be taken out by heavier weaponry in more open environments.
Turn it down to Hurt Me Plenty for classic maps. Doesn't help those trying it on Nightmare though.
Wow. You've completely missed the point of this game (just like many of your opinions). Congratulations.
Just beat it. Great final boss. Great ending. Great game. Nothing else really needs to be said. I am going to go play Quake 1 now.
Don't know what you folks are talking about
Game sounds AMAZING on my modest 5.1 setup
Yeah I'm on Nightmare. It turns into a survival horror, like how Doom was originally played lol.
I hope the worst is over though. Pinkies are the problem.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the chainsaw fuel -> ammo mechanic. Same with the glory kill -> health mechanic. It's clever but... perhaps shallow? Compared to the amount of health and ammo in the map being strictly designed into the map. I don't know.
Glory kills is a risk and reward kind of deal.
I'm low on health and I'm against multiple enemies. Do I:
A: stun a enemy and regain some health and risk dying because a enemy is shooting a fireball at me and being overrun
Or
B: scouring around for health packs and try kill of the enemy and risk being killed since I'm being overrun
Enemies seem to drop health on regular kills when you're super low on health so sometimes you don't even need to take the risk.

Health and ammo on kill means that you're always encouraged to keep fighting in a pinch rather than running away, and it lets the designers keep enemy damage high and ammo caps low to produce those tense moments more often. It makes sense for the game's heavy arena focus.
Carefully rationed medkits and ammo packs make more sense in the classic DOOM level paradigm, where the player is engaged in a long term war of attrition against the level as a whole and resource management is key.
Even Nightmare feels too difficult IMO. Ultra violence is the perfect ratio of difficulty to fun but I honestly found even the first map a total chore on nightmare. Just frustrating and not fun. Ultra nightmare can do one

I actually kinda like the multiplayer after giving it more of a chance. Warpath is pretty fun and I like making my Doom guy look as garish as possible.

the problem is that if you hunt for all the secrets and upgrades, the endgame gets very easy.
even nightmare was easy, I bet the second and third boss on the first try.
but I agree the beginning in nightmare is super tough, up until you get some health upgrades
