DOOM |OT| Rip and tear, until it's done

But you liked DOOM? How is it different from those games?

It's closer to Shadow Warrior than Pain Killer or Serious Sam, in that it's a concentrated, directed campaign effort rather than a themepark shooting gallery. It's much better than SW though.

All enemies have distinct attacks, leading to solid combat variety. Enemy feedback is great. Battle arenas, when they do appear, are deliberately constructed and distinct. Movement is fluid and fast with little to no clunk. The pacing of the levels is pretty well done. There is a ton of polish. Secret locations are fun rather than laborious, tedious, or impossible. Paced a hell of a lot better than most shooters, and it really just keeps ramping things up (altho your arsenal eventually outpaces it).

Edit: Also, surprisingly solid platforming.

Edit 2: It did take 3 hours to really convince me it wasn't just a AAA version of Shadow Warrior or a Rebellion shooter, and 5 hours to convince me it was super super good. I think it took me 18 hours to complete, searching for all secrets, and they really just flew by.

nothing new to add, but having just finished it, I wasn't a huge fan of the final boss or
the first boss, but the Hell Guard (I think? The two parasite things) was a fantastic fight, so hopefully they use that as a template in the future. I didn't mind the cliff-hanger, but I did find the last level to be a bit anti-climactic. Like, by that point in the game I was already so powerful that I was often ending fights at max health (this is on the hard mode available from the start). The previous hell-levels kind of counteracted that with their awesome level design, but the last level really was just a series of less interesting arenas.

Still, hugely impressed and looking forward to the next one.

This image sums up how I feel when playing DOOM, funnily enough I started re-reading it recently

Using the scope to read the scattered documents on the floor. I have to place them just outside the center of the scope or they get too blurred by the overlay effect.

Are those last 2 legit latin? Anyone capable of translating?

I remember over a year ago when people got to see Doom behind closed doors and no one recorded it. All anyone had to say was how great it was, and how brutal and fast paced everything was. Because nothing leaked how all i could go off of was what people were saying and i just remember thinking how much of a hyperbole everything was. Boy was i wrong. Now i know.

Just finished it. Fucking awesome.

Best credits roll of a game I've seen, loved the recreation of the original Doom box art. Need to screen cap it for 3440x1440 for a new wallpaper lol.

So, anyone having trouble with the "What Else Ya Got" trophy/achieve? I did every challenge and no trophy appeared.

Yup, confirmed glitched trophy. After hearing about it happening to a friend, I've been waiting for a patch to go for the Platinum.

That one and the one for upgrading all weapons seems to be the ones giving people problems.

It is latin but it's fragments of sentences and basically gibberish. Says google translate. Presumably some lorem ipsum variation. The first sentence is 'Developer's standard resume..' apparently, so I presume it's copied from a template.

I tried google translate myself but I don't trust it one bit when it started out with something about pregnancy effectiveness, and adding some words changed the entire sentence to something about casino employees.

Lol, it gets lost the more you type, probably because the words make no sense in context.

I still like the shotgun for picking off weaker enemies like imps. The mastery upgrade on the SSG is pretty ridiculous though, completely wrecks Hellknights, poor guys.

Finally through with the campaign. Holy shit what an awesome ride it was. I love it.

Especially at the end
where you ram your BFG in the mouth of this spidermind creature thing felt so satisfying

Please id give us some single player DLC and a proper MP and not this call of doom like loadout and progression thingy.

I finished it about an hour ago. Most engrossed I've been in a game in months maybe a year. I was sitting on the edge of my seat for the entire game.

I even liked the lore and story. I love the callbacks to the previous games. Heck, I liked it so much I even played some multiplayer. Honestly, the multiplayer could be ok if they just threw out all of the load outs, put respawning weapons on the map, and made it so the rocket launchers bounced yourself and other players around like Quake 1.

If probably play the shit out of it if those changes were made.

It wrecks everything. I take down pretty much everything with the SSG. Before you speed it up, the animation is so nostalgic, too.

The moment to moment gameplay feels just fine to me. I dont' even have much of a problem with the loadouts. It's just everything else around it that brings down the experience so much that I cannot in good conscience call it good. The p2p matchmaking in place of a server browser is just alienating with no real socialization and community building. The social aspect of the multiplayer is just utterly hollow and fleeting which I despise. I'm one of those who has never touched any modern "consolified" multiplayer games like CoD4 or Halo3+ (apart from a brief stint of BF3), and through that lens it just makes this whole method of constructing a multiplayer experience seem so alien and puzzling.

And then you have the awful downtimes between each match which just goes on for several minutes, which is particularly annoying for game modes that tend to be shorter like Clan Arena. It's impossible to have an extended uninterrupted gameplay session. I don't know if this is something you have to put up with in other matchmaking-based multiplayer FPS as well, since I practically haven't played any.

I feel like the upgraded SSG might be too strong. I mean, most things hit by a double-barrel shot will be stunned and they usually won't have time to attack while you wait for the reload. It's a big difference from the Doom 2 SSG. Maybe slowing down the reload animation would help.

Yeah, once I upgraded the super shotgun, gg game

Holy shit at the difficulty spike at Kadingir Sanctum. Playing on Ultra Violence and game was a cake walk, then the game decides to throw several of each type of large demon at you in a tiny ass arena lol.

End game spoilers:

I was talking to my brother about how I was a little disappointed the cyber spiders weren't in the game RIGHT before that final boss fight. What a cool god damn game.

Also I think the super shotgun wouldn't feel right if it wasn't as powerful as it currently is. It's the Doom gun. That and the BFG.

Couldn't think of where else to post this. Have we heard of any other games that runs Vulcan on the PS4? I'm not a technically minded person so I could be wrong and I certainly don't know if this is significant or not. It might not even be saying that but I thought I'd post it for people who know these things:

“I am really excited about a lot of the things we have coming in the future,” Stratton said. “The way [the programmers] architected the engine for the consoles, particularly the PlayStation 4, it sets it up really well to be natively capable on the new Vulkan API for PCs, which is really going to expand the audience.

“When that comes out and those cards come out, with DOOM we have an upcoming release that will be Vulkan supported, it will make your game run really well on older-generation cards and at 200-plus frames a second on the higher-end stuff. And you know it runs really well, really smooth on the consoles on both sides. I’m really proud of our tech team.”

I too was wondering for the last 3rd of the game what a shame that enemy didn't show up.

...but then my keyboard went over my head with a "FUCK YEAH!" shout when the final boss showed up :'D

Switch Back 9

a lot of my threads involve me fucking up somehow. Perhaps I'm a moron?
Super shotgun was great but I barely used anything other than the Gauss Cannon once I upgraded the Siege Mode fully.

Shit was unstoppable and had crazy range.

I feel all the weapons have a pretty solid use case except the plasma rifle. It's not a bad weapon by any means, but the gauss cannon using the same ammo kind of ruined it.

On the contrary, once I got double jump and air control mastery the game became a cakewalk for the most part.

Made it back to the
UAC, and I am destroying motherfuckers on nightmare. This difficulty feels like classic Doom II. So hard but fair.

This is the first game in a long time that just feels excessively replayable, I enjoy every moment and aspect of the game and that is so hard to find these days especially with FPS games.

Id I love you.

I will snatch every motherfucker birthday.

LORE QUESTION REGARDING THE FINAL BOSS:

So over on the DOOM wiki, it says that the Spider Mastermind is Olivia Pierce transformed by the demon lords as a reward for opening the portal. Is this actually supported by in-game evidence, though? We do see Olivia pulled down into the Well, and then the Spider Mastermind emerges. And it would explain the cybernetics on the Spider Mastermind, since Olivia herself was a cyborg. The only demons in the game to feature cybernetics are demons worked on by the UAC — the Revenants, Cyber Mancubi and Cyberdemon — so it would be consistent for Olivia to be the Spider Mastermind. Hmm...

On the other hand, the way the lore speaks of the Spider Mastermind — the Aranea Imperatrix, or Dread Widow, "one become two become legion" — makes it sound like it was an entity that already existed before Olivia, spoken of in tablets. But perhaps Olivia became a host for this entity, and the Spider Mastermind was the corporeal form it took.

As others have said, "one become two become legion" is probably foreshadowing the Arachnotrons, the descendants of the Spider Mastermind that will probably show up in a sequel or story DLC to continue their mother's work.

Final boss is such a fantastic design, BTW.
