DOOM |OT| Rip and tear, until it's done

I haven't finished it yet, but umm I don't think he gives a flying fuck. He just wants to kill and defeat all the demons. Like, that's all Doom Guy needs.

That's all there is to care about, and it's awesome when the game plays with that.

It's a weird day when we can have a serious debate about the character motivations of Doomguy.

id are pretty smart. They've managed to declare "Buck story," and at the same time make it intriguing through subtle detailing and a well-written codex.

Did you watch the beginning of the game, where he looks at the corpse while Sam says "it was for the benefit of mankind" and then he grows pissed because it was definitely NOT for the benefit of mankind, and he smashes the terminal?

Did you see how he looks at the portals while Sam tells them they're necessary for the "for the benefit of mankind" before he smashes the batteries powering them so the demons can no longer reach the humans in the human world?

He cares. He loves killing demons, but he also cares about the people he's protecting.

Also, him being rough with corpses doesn't mean he doesn't care. He's being practical. They're already dead, and he has no time to waste.

"He cares about the people he's protecting" seems kind of ridiculous, especially considering how you don't get to see him interact with any live human beings
who don't ultimately end up being antagonists
.

If anything, his anger is probably at how blatantly full of shit Hayden is, and he's wrecking the machinery and shit in a "oh get the fuck out of here with that shit" kind of sense.

You're not wrong, but it's different when framed in the context shutting the portal from hell to Earth/Mars by any means, and staying behind so the demon threat couldn't invade again (according to prophecy stones). That's not to say he's framed at all to be a bleeding heart, care bear type of character.

You can simultaneously think little of humanity's BS and not want to see it destroyed. Hayden basically
explains Doom Guy's thought processes at the end.

All I am saying is that there is a big difference going from this:

staying behind so the demon threat couldn't invade again (according to prophecy stones).

To this

while the Doom Marine is more of the "no, fuck you, it's not worth it if even one innocent person dies" type

Kinda loved that
the head of UAC never really becomes a villain.... his motives are pretty clear from the beginning and it carries through to the end instead of some sort of mustache twirling heel turn

Absolutely. I think I said as much too.

I am not the villain of this story.

We're going to kill him anyway. Die
Hayden
die.

is the doom soundtrack out? or is this like a compilation of all the audio files from the game just taken out of steam files?

It's not out yet. Everything on youtube is a mash of the dynamic audio. The retail mix should be pretty special, I'd hope.

Isn't that Doom 2?
No, Doom 2 ends with him realizing that he'd rather build stuff and that shooting demons isn't all it's cracked up to be.

DOOM II ENDING SPOILERS:
V55nHuh.jpg

There is no game that ends where the new Doom begins. He's still freely running around Hell at the end of Doom 64, with no sarcophagus trap in sight.

Love the game... but you know what drives me nuts?? when the hardest difficulty is not accessible when you first start. Why do games do this?? I had to play putting restrictions to improve my experience like never using the big green gun or the saw .. games that do this drive me NUTS what is the logic??

True but the ending of 64 is a perfect setup for that to happen. A prequel DLC about a post-64 Doomguy in Hell getting put into the sarcophagus would be great.

We might get a prequel DLC where we play the lead up to doomguy ending up in the chest.

I hope so.

I don't think this game is linked to any games of the past. Its a reboot just like doom 3 was cause in no previous dooms was there ever a mention of the night sentinels.

Also, I hope the DLC is like Thy Flesh Consumed where
he is travels through Hell trying to get back to Earth and when he arrives it leads to the sequel.

Well thats just incorrect as it is very clear it is a direct sequel to DOOM II

Actually soldier through the MP for the two trophies. Now, all I need to do is publish a snapmap and I am platinum. I think I'll name it, "For a platinum" and make it like a easy map for points.

Any campaign DLC should be about going after the big bad while stranded in hell. There were several mentions about the different dynasties of hell in the codex entries, and I think there's some Chekov's Gun in there.

Wow. That was a jaw-droppingly awesome campaign. Played on Hurt Me Plenty, and that was plenty difficult for me. I'll be happy to watch others min-max their way to beating Ultra-Nightmare, etc. Took 9-10 hours to finish. Did lots of exploration and found maybe 75% of secrets/items.

This game feels SOOOOO good to play. Like many others have said, being pro-active at all times, and constantly moving in order to survive is so different from every other shooter out there.

I also like how well the game rewards exploration. Every single thing you find can lead to you upgrading your weapons, suit, or runes, and sometimes you need that break in the gameplay to recover mentally from some really intense firefights. It's nice and zen to run around the environments once all of the demons have been slain, and intuiting how to maneuver your way to a secret area.

The berserk power-up is spectacular, but I loved all of them -- Haste especially. You're moving at Quake speeds and just laying waste to demons with your super shotgun, glory-killing, and grabbing ledges, all at a break-neck pace. This game truly pushes you to use your senses and strategize on the run at the edges of your abilities.

This was the first Doom I had played since literally the original in 1994 on a keyboard (without a mouse). And hell did it give me the same feeling as it did way back then. The continuous escalation of enemies is only matched by the escalation of SICK guns and upgrades that give you more and more power to unleash hell...on Hell.

The final boss of Doom 2 is in the game and the data log about it states that he was defeated long ago, and that he is regenerating, doesn't get much more concrete than that.

I feel like this game would blow people away who have never touched Serious Sam or Painkiller and will be "pretty good" to those that have.

Eh, don't you
casually pass by the Icon of Sin on your way to grabbing the Crucible? I think they reduced the IoS to literally just the head as being a shrine of hell.

Which log is that because in the two logs I've seen that mention it says that
the icon of sin is a sleep until the call of ages. Also, the other mention is that the night sentinel who betrayed them his son was brought back to life as the icon of sin.l

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is there a way to replay the game on a harder difficulty with all of the stuff I unlocked? I'm debating on either getting the collectables individually through mission select or replaying the game on the hardest difficulty and getting them through that route.

anyone know the answer to this?

I suck at finding secrets, I got to the fifth level and found less than five.

But man, what a game. Was not expecting to like it as much as I do. The controls are just spot-on, and the speed, verticality, and the different types of enemies you have to deal with at the same time really set it apart. Really makes military shooters and even stuff like Halo seem boring in comparison since you're typically only fighting a couple different enemy types at a time. And in games like Halo big encounters feel like tactical. I might be fighting some Jackals, Grunts, and Elites, but besides maybe the Elites I don't feel like I'm really prioritizing anything in terms of what I need to take care of first, and making sure I always know where some enemies are relative to me.

I loved the Wolfenstein reboot too, Bethesda's on a role.

One thing I'm curious about is how often I should be doing glory kills. They're pretty fast but doing them on every single enemy gets sort of old and slows the game down a tiny bit. But it seems stupid not to do them, you're invulnerable during the animations (I think) and you get health from them, so it sort of feels like you're punished when you don't do them.

I love all the side objective/challenges they have packed into the missions. Super cool. Adds an extra layer on top. Really enjoying this.

I'm definitely not going to do it, but what would people think of me if I dropped the difficulty down from Hurt Me Plenty

i played on hurt me plenty and still had a hard time in some places

all i ever do is play videogames including a lot of doom (zandronum) so i dunno

trying nightmare now and having a really hard time beating the first level though

I don't play many shooters, and I don't think I've played one without regenerating health since HalfLife 2, and I'm still dying a few times a level on Hurt Me Plenty.

You'll have to turn in your gaming license and return any remaining mountain dew to walmart for store credit. The credit is to be redeemed for monopoly variants only.

Just do whatever you gotta do, dude. I'm actually kind of shocked that I'm playing this on Ultra Violence. I dont have as much time for gaming like I used to, so I cant put in the work to "git gud." I got Bloodborne and had to give up. I play most games on normal or easy. For the first time in years I actually had to raise the difficulty, I couldnt lose on HMP. I guess this game just clicked with me.
However I finally hit my first wall on UV about 3/4 through the game and I'm disappointed to admit that I may have to drop it down. I'm gunna run my head into that wall a good few times more before I give in though.

It's mainly those god damn
Pinkys and Cacodemons. On their own they're okay but in the same mix with multiple Hell Knights and Mancubi along with a legion of Imps, it's all just too much at once from too many directions. Dodging any direction is just dodging into more danger.
I'm playing with a controller so I think I need to up my horizontal sensitivity.

UAC on Ultra Nightmare had my heart pounding like crazy.

Yeah. Tell me about it. Did it on like fourth try. Always on the move, no turning, still going forward in arenas, strafing, bunnyhopping. Or baiting lots into small corridors.

I am now playing on Nightmare and it's oh so fuckin awesome.

I had company over tonight, and showed this game. One friend kept pointing out all the ways it's "metal as fuck." The Glory Kills are real crowd pleasers. (No my friends are not serial killers — it's just so over the top!)

Getting towards the end. It gets really hard at some points, but rewarding. Coming from a guy who downloaded the original DOOM demo off a BBS day one, this is one of the best games I've ever played. I can't believe how well they captured what makes DOOM, DOOM in a modern game. Great work id software.
