Doom: The Dark Ages is a flop

Never in my lifetime would I ever think I would live to see a Doom game flop. I actually thought this was going to be one of Xbox's outstanding rare successes. Sad times!!!

What would be of value is MS showing how much advertising revenue they made for dashboard placements across however many millions of players engaged with the game.

If that advertising revenue (I am considering cross tracking, intent flagging, etc. etc.) is greater than 3,000,000 copies x NOPAT (net operating profit after tax) for the ID division of MS gaming studios then MS is the winner here.

(I know I know...it is a lot of what if's...and I know they will never share that information but I would love to see it).
Dude how the entire advertising industry doesn't collapse like a house of cards is a mystery to me.

I can still enjoy a good shooter, but I never fancied this after bailing on the second game about a quarter way through. The bullet hell genre is kind of played out at this point, everyone's making them and there's only so many times I can go through these motions over the course of 30 years.

The game is $69.99USD. It would be important to cite which currency the $80 is referred to.

$80 Doom is the new $90 Mario Kart.

I honestly don't know if the people who parrot these false talking points are misinformed or just lying, but it's become an obvious tell that reveals when someone cares more about whatever narrative they're pushing than reality.

You know what i do with threads about things i don't care? I don't click on them
It's just that we already have a thread to discuss this so I don't see the point to make another one. That's it, no need to be on the defensive.
And it's a public forum, so I'll discuss whatever I want.

Seems the interest wasn't there even before any prices were known.

Hard to say if people got their fill in 2016/20 alongside a section of older gamers that wont even be playing now. To me it looks a poor Doom game but not sure if something similar to the previous would create much more interest.

Game was way too expensive - also it was disappointing to see them double down on the fantasy elements - that's just not Doom to me. The combination of those two things made me decide to buy this one later when it's on sale.

Everything Microsoft touches these days turns to shit.

No one wants to buy their consoles.

No one wants to buy their games.
i dont think microsoft really innovates. they have been rendered invincible and too big to fail due to their old wintel monopoly making them into a monster. nothing against them, but it just kinda seems like they are just "there" being microsoft and thats it

1. Steam peak concurrent players:
- eternal (2020): 104,891
- dark ages (2025): 31,470

2. You tube peak views of reveal trailer:
-eternal reveal: 8.1 M views
-TDA reveal: 2.1 M views

3. Amazon preorders:
-Eternal: top10
-TDA: not even top 50

4. Sales:
-Eternal 3M first week
-TDA: less than 1M

5. But the gamepass cope:
Doom: TDA was outperformed by Hi Fi RUSH (also a gamepass title on day 1):
Hi Fi Rush:
-Also day 1 gamepass title
-Not a triple A GAME
-New IP
-Rhythm-based game
sold more units on steam on its first week of release than Doom: TDA
Hi fi rush took several months to hit 2 million total players - Doom did more than that in a week. Also where are you getting Doom and Hi Fi rush steam units sold? Hi Fi rush peaked at 6000 players, 1/5th of Dooms total but you are saying it sold more copies?
I think you may want to evaluate why you want so desperately for this game to fail that you seem to be taking obviously wrong data at face value or just making it up to make yourself feel better.

The lower than expected numbers on Steam are a surprise to me as I thought this would be a hit on PC, but maybe it is the system requirements that are hampering sales?

On PS5 (the next place for high sales), MS have likely shot themselves in the foot by releasing so many games in such a small window, alongside some other cracking games like Expedition 33.

I suspect that sales will grow on PS5 once there is a bit of a lull in releases, however, I'm not seeing one atm, especially with DS2 on the way soon.

I'm already relatively LTTP with Expedition 33 due to my backlog.

I wanted to pick this up when they patch in Path Tracing but the 80€ price tag and the parrying mechanics require a deep sale for me to be interested. Playing Clair Obscur and while the parrying is very well done in that game, I do not need it in fucking Doom.
Do a good Quake game without so many gimmicks next and people will be happy.

Meanwhile, back in reality:

But please do keep dismissively moving your goalposts to justify defending overpriced slop.

I'm not defending anything. I said that $80 Doom: The Dark Ages is a false narrative, which it still is.

Here's the US Steam price:

If you want to say the game costs too much, then say it costs too much. Or, if you want to say that the discrepancy between US and European prices is fucked, then say that.

But don't lie and obfuscate and spin.

80$ for a base game that does not exist in physical copies (you have to download entire game instead). Gamepass won't help either as you'll simply finish it in a week for 10$. What did you expect?
none of this is an issue.
Hogwarts was a 70$ game that also did not exist on the disc.
Game install on a disc is still better than digital game tied to an account honestly.

The problem for not selling well is poor marketing and it just doesn't look that interesting with the parrying

Really? That's what you are going with?

Also, nice way of moving the goalpost. I was just saying that this thread wasn't necessary.

What do you mean? You quoted me and seemed to be trying to dispute what I said about the game's price, but you used an entirely different currency. I assumed you were arguing in bad faith, but, if you weren't, then I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions, but there's still no $80 Doom: The Dark Ages.

It's a pretty great game, that's unfortunate. The cost of admission is fairly high on PC for the specs which made me want to try it on Gamepass first. I do have the intent to purchase but only when I upgrade my pc.

Thing is, we are not all U.S citizens and I don't really pay attention about the € or $ sign. Was I wrong about it? Yeah, sure.

But no need to be a jerk about it, you could have just said "hey it's not $80, but it might be 80€, just be careful". Problem solved.

They had a winning formula with Eternal, all they had to do was to make the same game but getting rid of the silly story.

Instead, they doubled down on the story and got rid of what made Eternal fun. TDA is clearly designed for gamepads and it shows. Sucks to be id, there must be a ton of talent there but it's Bethesda and MS the ones pulling the strings. Hope they next project goes better for them.

I'm sorry about that. I honestly thought you were arguing in bad faith and trying to pull a fast one by shifting the underlying facts being discussed, because there's *a lot* of that in online discourse. And there have been many posts on GAF recently misrepresenting prices for easy outrage points.

If I had known you were operating in good faith, I would have been less snarky in my response.

Effects of inflation are weighing heavily on people. Wages have not kept up. Expect people to reject these prices for new releases with the exception of the staple Sports, CoD and GTA.

Looks like it. Rare case of people voting by their wallet because their wallet is actually getting hit from multiple sectors for real.
I doubt its Doom fatigue because I still play 2016 from time to time.

Everyone waiting for a sale when its an 80$ game.
Wait, they really launched it at $80? When did that happen? it's 69.99 on psn and steam and xbox, that is for physical as well. All USA prices. Is this in a different region?

If they were doing $80 I could see people skipping.
I skipped because I hated, hated Eternal, Loved 2016 though.
I wait for sales anyway , except for rpgs (expedition 33 and fantasy life, lunar are phenomenal, and were $50-60 games)
