Play the games James. DOOM '16 is fun, but Eternal is where the pure gameplay bliss is.
Games have a bit of exploration (not near enough when compared to the old games) but I'd say 90% of the game is combat. That said the combat is not just shoot this and that. DOOM has always (since 1993) about facing different groups of enemies and, since each enemy is very different than the rest, those different combinations force you to adapt and strategize on the fly. It's deep for an FPS, this is not Call of Duty.
And man, the visuals! I bet Eternal looks like a hot babe on the PS5.

The platforming segments dodging the large rotating fireball sticks is some straight up Mario shit and doesn't belong in a Doom game (to me).

Massive DOOM fan until the end, and I get that feeling. Did I enjoy the platforming? Not really, but I enjoyed everything else about the game so much that the platforming stuff paled in comparison.
I feel bad for anyone that can't finish it because I personally think it's very worth it to do so. Sure, I loved 2016 more as a whole, but Eternal was so much bigger and bombastic in ways that it was hard to not love. Not only did I love 2016's vibe more, I just felt like it had more game. Between Snapmap and multiplayer, it felt more like a full package we hadn't seen in awhile. Eternal just had that asymmetrical multiplayer that was not good whatsoever. Hell it was hard to find matches on launch day on PC, lol.
They've said that Dark Ages will be "more grounded" and more like 2016, so I'm sure a lot of the platforming and that kind of thing will be no more. I say that because I know that was a negative among a large chunk of their community that was brought up frequently. But they also mentioned a stronger focus on melee combat, so it'll be really neat to see how it pans out.
I'd love to see them return to multiplayer again, not the silly asymmetrical multiplayer thing. I just wish we could return to a world where a AAA FPS could house a single player campaign, multiplayer with various modes, and coop.

I already established I loved Doom 2016 though, so it's mechanics are very much Doom in a modern era. It all promotes violence and action like the old games.
Platforming through entire sections of Mario bros flaming hoops is a deviation from that.

I thought the platforming in Eternal was fun. And it helped mix up the game play and allowed the devs to hide secrets in more areas.
Only thing I'm worried about for the new game is it going back to 2016, and slowing way down. It will be boring after Eternal. Also the focus on strafing has me worried that it will be huge open empty areas. We will see I guess.
I was hoping they'd evolve the formula and add more to it, not backtrack.
2016 was a good first step, but Eternal is where the series hit its stride. Here's hoping Dark Ages continues the trend

Also for the Chads out there who loved Eternal I would recommend Kill Knight, it's basically twin stick shooter meets Eternal. Fast, challenging, and has that "push forward" combat ethos, with different kills restoring different resources. Good shit.

The saving grace for those of us that think Eternal took some missteps is that id have said that every subsequent Doom game will have a different gameplay loop, and from what we know about The Dark Ages they've already pivoted away from the verticality in combat that was introduced in Eternal.
Unfortunately they appear to be sticking with the awful expanded lore Bethesda had them shovel into Eternal so that they could have more merchandising options. As long as it has skippable cutscenes I can I can overlook that shit though.

Eternal is literally the definition of what an arena shooter should be. You got know idea about Doom lore, the platforming is part of Doom because that was their intention. You are the one with issues, not the game. Imagine discounting one of the best designed FPS' because you don't like to do a little platforming. You act like they ruined the game, putting the platforming aside, It's so much better than Doom 2016. I didn't have any problem with Eternal's platforming. Those segments are easy and sort, mostly there to provide a moment of respite between shootouts and a change of pace. Plus, it reminded me a bit of Metroid Prime lol.
Will probably give it a replay soon, before Dark Ages comes out.

It belongs because they say it belongs, I've been a Doom fan since having the original on DOS in 1993. There was nothing wrong with the platforming, it was a nice added complexity and nice break to the fast paced content. So many people shit on Eternal and to me the arguments are not valid at all. You can tell so much passion and love went into Eternal, it's such a polished game and runs like a dream on current gen. Not you in particular, but I think half the people who complain about the game and prefer Doom 2016 just found this one too hard/complex and don't want to admit it. They just want a brain dead shooter where they can run through it with ease and not worry about anything else.
