Doom The Dark Ages | Preview Thread

1. Enemies, as opposed to 2016 and especially Eternal, are static. They barely move , they don't chase you. The pace is kind of lethargic so I got bored watching a few minutes into the gameplay video.
2. The move to an wide, open area , again as opposed to the more closed arenas of 2016 and Eternal, brings what exactly? Now when things get rough and you are overwhelmed, you can just run away. Thats lame.
The tight arenas of Eternal are what make the gameplay encounters so intense.

Devs need to understand having bigger open areas is not always better.

3rd party has always been the best, but that's kinda broad.

But apart from games not being up ones alley, Xbox' output is just extremely mediocre overall on per game basis.
The only exceptions are Forza and FlightSim, but the latter doesn't even really count as a game.

It's like Xbox is dedicated to GamePass so much, that their games have been degraded to GamePass filler.

Doom The Dark Ages doesn't seem to make a difference.
GamePass effect was not a myth…

Halo 3 was great. Makes me wish Halo would have a Halo moment....
It was. I just really wish we could go back to fps games having a campaign that you can play it with friends, and multiplayer with different modes. Wild that it's 2025 and having that much content in a game hardly exists anymore. Another reason why 2016 felt really good to me, it felt like a full package. A campaign, multiplayer, and snap map felt like quite a bit. Then with Eternal they lost more content, and even more with Dark Ages. They're saying there's "a lot to do and unlock" so I guess we'll find out later. But I do hate that it's just a campaign and that's it.

All in all, I'm hoping the game is good/great, and I'm hoping my concerns aren't a big deal at all. I also hope that they're leaning harder into Quake because they want to jump back over to the Quake IP and my god I hope it's darker and grittier. Because each DOOM sequel is getting less dark and gritty.

I see you've already crossed off Doom before even playing it. I also enjoy commenting on movies I haven't seen and books I haven't read.
It's just the usual crowd doing their thing. If the game turns out to be good, it's only Bethesda. It was coming to PS anyway, and MS had nothing to do with it. If it's bad, it's Xbox mediocrity and Gamepass caused it. Just people with an axe to grind, forever.

Can't say something about a 3rd party PS game?

I like the idea of mission variety a lot but that depends on stuff like the giant mech and dragon feeling satisfying. I'm more optimistic for the former than the latter based on what I watched so far.

Looks very… repetitive?

I loved both modern Doom games, but so far this is not making a good impression on me.

Also is there a slider for less intrusive glowing indicator bullshit? I barely can see the demons anymore..

I know this is your go-to GIF, but as usual, it's just hollow bait that doesn't have any detail. I think the last game Sony put out was Astro Bot. I gave it a 9 and said it's one of my top games of the year. I've actually been one of the only people on here expressing some optimism about Intergalactic. I've never said I hate Yotei. It looks solid, even though I didn't finish Tsushima because it got a bit repetitive for me. I've owned literally every PS console. I started to heavily criticize them around the time Jim Ryan was making big changes, and he's since left and nearly everything he was pushing has been canceled, so my only real crime was just being correct and seeing it years in advance of most people here. That's it.

The dragon sections looked fucking awful to be honest hopefully its a very small part of the game. Everything else looked great.

I haven't had time to watch videos, but impressions ITT are sounding rough. God damn it.

Three games in, how have they not nailed the formula?

Looks fun enough but to me it gives the impression they wanted to make something else but had to fit that vision within the Doom IP for obvious business reasons.

The IGN video was a waste of 9 minutes. Didn't see anything interesting and didn’t appreciate the constant clips of other games, so I’ll look at the rest later.

Doom doesn’t need a Halo moment. The dragon riding, mech riding is just a tedious distraction to attract people who don’t understand first person shooters like Doom.

It's posts like these that keep replying to me actually. Over and over. Especially yours.

My first post in the thread actually.

Maybe you should take the time to play the previous entries in the series instead of trying to find new ways to feign persecution.

Why this "Doom" doesn't look like Doom at all?
I guess that depends on how you quantify that.

Aesthetically it looks like more Doom Eternal.

Gameplay-wise I see a strong classic Doom influence as far as strafing to avoid projectiles and shooting nonstop, just with additional mechanics thrown into the mix.

I'm playing the new one. Will be my first for the series. Looking forward to it.

What formula? They’ve been very clear that they aim to do something different with each game. They aren’t trying to replicate the bog standard Ubisoft game formula.
That's kind of a strange question. There's a bit of a gulf between the extremes of Ubisoft and doing something completely different. Titles in a series should share some core DNA that made people love them in the first place. It's like how RE7 went back to survival horror roots and started a series renaissance for RE. Yes, try some new stuff, but do it by evolving the core formula that retains what people like about the series. People loved 2016. Evolve from there.

Tbh even typing that all that out seems pointless. "Formula" obviously doesn't mean 1:1. It's common sense and I feel like you know that.

So with reveal not sold, neither with this, this doesn't seem to tick the DOOM vibe box at all. Especially for the price they are asking.. Rather replay the other 2 before it's on a nice sale. ..Oh yeah and DOOM 3 too, since I never got to it last year for the 20 year anniversary.

Yeah, don't know boys...

- Doom was a solid 7.5-8/10 due to it being a fresh comeback back then and also because of that 60fps smoothness on console.

- Doom Eternal...I hate played through the damned thing - between the Mickey mouse epilepsy inducing colored pickup bullshit, the micromanagement bullshit (small power up /rocket icons and waiting for them to fill up), the difficulty spikes up the arse, the mediocre platforming, the pretentious "how do you do fellow kids" MeTaL esthetics and bullshit lore... yeah, fuck that game, only played it because it was on game pass.

- Doom Eternal : not seeing anything that I like to be honest in these preview videos, The Mickey mouse pickup colored bullshit is still in, the action looks...boring(?), the dragon section looks out of place and... yeah, this is not for me apparently, or rather, I'm gonna be picking it up out of pure curiosity when it's down to 20 Eurodollars max.

I don’t hate the change in gameplay loop, I actually think that’s a positive move, because the focus on lateral movement and projectile avoidance is very reminiscent of the original games. I think the projectiles are too slow in these previews so I want to see how fast you can make it and I’m curious as to whether increasing the speed of projectiles also increases your own.. as the chainshot weapon doesn’t feel very impactful and seems too slow.

A shmup design is fine if you can really scale the difficulty up but I don’t know how I feel about the parry system and I really don’t like the titan and dragon nonsense. Parts of it feel a little too Xbox 360 era in their design.

Apparently Hugo has said that the Chainshot weapon comes from an alternative dimension and I REALLY don’t want them to connect this world to Quake. I get the sense that Hugo never played the original Doom games or Quake despite what he says, and while I don’t have anything against them injecting some of the D&D inspirations into the series, what they’ve done with Doom.. particularly with Eternal.. feels too Hollywood and pedestrian for my liking. It isn’t metal or dark. It’s comic book shit.

I’m holding out hope though. This is just the first round of previews and I don’t think we have seen enough to for me to condemn it outright. I’ll still play it on GamePass and see what it’s like. But I’m happier than ever that we have the source code for the original games and Quake 1 and a near unlimited amount of community content for them.

Extremes aside, your comment about them not nailing the formula makes very little sense. Especially when the devs are actively trying to differentiate each game. If you prefer 2016 that’s fine. But they aren’t trying to build off that to satisfy you personally.
