Saw a gameplay clip and I'm already overwhelmed like I kept thinking "slow the fuck down and take it easy" then I remembered it's Doom. I think it's waaaaay too chaotic for me, despite enjoying Doom 2016.

Looks meh.

I really like the concept and all; DOOM with medieval-style art and QUAKE-like is totally my thing. But I’m not a fan of vehicle sections in games, I think this trend must have ended long time ago, in the Halo era...

The mech and dragon parts feel super dull to me and may completely kill the game’s pacing. For me, it´s a pass and I feel bummed about that...

Extremes aside, your comment about them not nailing the formula makes very little sense. Especially when the devs are actively trying to differentiate each game. If you prefer 2016 that’s fine. But they aren’t trying to build off that to satisfy you personally.
An established series ignoring formula is what's senseless, actually. Doom 2016 is generally pretty beloved by the Doom fanbase, and it was so precisely because it went back to series roots. It wouldn't just be satisfying me personally. It would be satisfying the very large majority of the player base, which is what you'd think they'd want. You wouldn't have the lukewarm reception Dark Age has right now.

Making weird changes is exactly what kills so many franchises. No one asked for Specialists in a Battlefield game, for example. No one wanted Command and Conquered to become a braindead shooter (which thank god it reverted with the following entries). Same with Doom 3s slow pace putting the series in stasis for 12 years.

Either way, we'll see if it pays off for them. I'll give it a chance through gamepass.

Basically holding down the trigger while strafing at static enemies, doing the occasional green light parry, yes.
What were your thoughts on Doom: Eternal? I loved it (I also really liked 2016), but the impressions here from the gameplay previews of this new entry don’t sound great.

C&C a braindead shooter? I only know of Renegade. Never played it but thought it was cool seeing the franchise in 3D.

That's the one! Never felt so disappointed at a game reveal dude. I'll admit I didn't give it a chance, but that just wasn't interesting to me.

Pretty substantial step down in gameplay compared to Eternal. Could still be fun and I'll definitely be playing it day 1.
looks better than Eternal to me it has more variety! Eternal was exhausting and the only thing that it added was jump jump jump shoot! I dint make it far in the game it got annoying quick, good thing I got it cheap used

This is a potential game of the year I am sick of all the people complaining about it who never even played it.

Getting Assassins creed shadows and Kingdom come 2 vibes all over again. Hating for the sake of hate because that's what the hive mind collective tells you to do, then the game turns around and makes record sales and players.

It's so static and slow. It lacks verticality, intensity, need for weapon variety, and glory kills ripping and tearing. DOOM Eternal has the best SP FPS gameplay ever. This looks like Serious Sam 4 DOOM reskin.

Edit: lack of dash/dodge is evident.

Looks like a massive stepback from Doom Eternal.

Still have purchased the premium edition but I'm so disappointed.

The game also looks like it has been heavily downgraded.

Looked way better in this footage.

Naw, this is typical pattern I see with Microsoft games with Indiana Jones and Avowed more recently. The media previews have shitty captures. Game on PC look stellar.

I mean cmon, is there any doubt that ID won't flex the game more than machinegames? With confirmed path tracing its a no brainer.

Agreed. I’m still looking forward to playing it, but it just takes away what I loved about Eternal. I can understand that if somebody didn’t like eternal’s frantic, coked out gameplay then this would be a welcome change of pace.
As someone who did love Eternal’s frenetic combat loop, especially when they threw everything at you in TAG part 1, and the Master Levels… I am glad to see them trying something different and experimenting. I believe Hugo Martin stated during an Eternal playthrough that such was what iD wants to do with every new entry that comes along in the series. I can see how TDA would not favor everybody though, and that’s perfectly fine.

I do believe/am hopeful that one will be able to crank the speed up via the sliders and make things faster and even more intense, which will be nice.

I haven't played a Doom game since Doom 3 and 2016 Doom although very good looked to cartoony for my liking. Doom The Dark Ages might be the one to pull me back in to the franchise. The weapons look awesome to me, especially that shield saw and flail.

22 levels in this game, which is considerably more than what was in Eternal, and that game felt nice and lengthy. TDA is gonna be BIG.
I hope they’re big. With no verticality I’ll enjoy exploring them more.

I wonder if difficulty affects enemy counts in the levels like classic doom.

Shame about the music. Still, I'm starving for new big titles, so I'm in day 1. But only from an unlicensed key seller. Only way to keep my boycott going for fucking over Mick Gordon and still playing the game. I recommend we all do the same. It's not like you're gonna refund it.

I trust Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin this will also be a banger like 2016 and Eternal. Also the whole ID Software employees have great talent.

I liked 2016, I loved Eternal, this sounds like they are trying something different again. Reading 'like Modern Warfare 3 with open world mission objectives' sounds horrible to me. I hated that in the Modern Warfare 3 campaign. Just give me an Arena shooter not a semi open world shooter. I'm really worried about this one and this is my most hyped game of 2025 (besides GTA if that's even really coming this year)

id don't rest when it comes to trying new stuff, that's for damn sure.

Looks pretty fucking solid, personally. I recently finished clearing the achievements for the Doom 1 + 2 re-release, and I can definitely see what they're aiming for in some of these previews. Stepping back from Eternal's ADHD combat loop is probably a smart decision, but they're clearly still trying to push their design forward. Dragon bits look like ass, but if they're short enough I won't really care. The real concern I have are these "open world" levels. The big open maps were always my least favourite of the original games - Doom 2 in particular. Doom works best when it's highly focused with a good sense of direction. "Open world" killed Halo Infinite, utterly destroying Halo's patented billion dollar flow. I hope id know what they're doing - 343i clearly didn't.

Looks good to me. I liked what I watch.
Wasn't a fan of eternal but this got me looking forward to May now

There will be those that love it day one. There will be those that say it's killed the franchise/ It's dumb.

Then there will be a war of Doom fans and gamers alike fighting over the trilogy as a whole and clawing at each other over what is the best doom.

Then there will be those that give no fucks and just sit back and play the game until they 100% it multiple times.

Edit: orange and green projectiles are going to be a big problem for me. I hope we can customize the colors.

This actually gave me some hope that I may like it.

I love games like Returnal and I can actually see a ton of influence of Returnal in Doom the Dark Ages, particularly all the bullet hell going on, and I think the parying and other mechanics add a lot more variety to the combat that was lacking in previous entries.

I'm optimistic, but I'm not a "Doom purist" like some are....

I don’t hate the change in gameplay loop, I actually think that’s a positive move, because the focus on lateral movement and projectile avoidance is very reminiscent of the original games. I think the projectiles are too slow in these previews so I want to see how fast you can make it and I’m curious as to whether increasing the speed of projectiles also increases your own.. as the chainshot weapon doesn’t feel very impactful and seems too slow.

A shmup design is fine if you can really scale the difficulty up but I don’t know how I feel about the parry system and I really don’t like the titan and dragon nonsense. Parts of it feel a little too Xbox 360 era in their design.

Apparently Hugo has said that the Chainshot weapon comes from an alternative dimension and I REALLY don’t want them to connect this world to Quake. I get the sense that Hugo never played the original Doom games or Quake despite what he says, and while I don’t have anything against them injecting some of the D&D inspirations into the series, what they’ve done with Doom.. particularly with Eternal.. feels too Hollywood and pedestrian for my liking. It isn’t metal or dark. It’s comic book shit.

I’m holding out hope though. This is just the first round of previews and I don’t think we have seen enough to for me to condemn it outright. I’ll still play it on GamePass and see what it’s like. But I’m happier than ever that we have the source code for the original games and Quake 1 and a near unlimited amount of community content for them.
I'm sorry to say it, but I think that's exactly what they're doing. I feel like they're slowly leaning more and more into them sharing the same universe. At some point they'll have to step away from DOOM games, and I think that's gonna be when they revisit Quake. For the longest time Quake Champions was their excuse for not doing that, but the game has been on life support for a long while. I'd love to see a new Quake, as I love both Quake and DOOM VERY much. But I'm definitely worried about Quake just going down this weird "power fantasy" path like DOOM has.

I just wish it was all darker and grittier. 😔

They had colour blind options in 2016 and Eternal so hopefully you are covered here as well, don't see why not.

Doom 2016 was is the first in a rebooted franchise, going back to roots would imply it went in a different direction in the first place. If you want to be technical, according to the developers themselves, Dark Ages is taken from OG Doom with the Horizontal/Strafing style gameplay and more like OG Doom than 2016.
