An established series ignoring formula is what's senseless, actually. Doom 2016 is generally pretty beloved by the Doom fanbase, and it was so precisely because it went back to series roots. It wouldn't just be satisfying me personally. It would be satisfying the very large majority of the player base, which is what you'd think they'd want. You wouldn't have the lukewarm reception Dark Age has right now.Extremes aside, your comment about them not nailing the formula makes very little sense. Especially when the devs are actively trying to differentiate each game. If you prefer 2016 that’s fine. But they aren’t trying to build off that to satisfy you personally.
What were your thoughts on Doom: Eternal? I loved it (I also really liked 2016), but the impressions here from the gameplay previews of this new entry don’t sound great.Basically holding down the trigger while strafing at static enemies, doing the occasional green light parry, yes.

Making weird changes is exactly what kills so many franchises. No one asked for Specialists in a Battlefield game, for example. No one wanted Command and Conquered to become a braindead shooter (which thank god it reverted with the following entries). Same with Doom 3s slow pace putting the series in stasis for 12 years.
Either way, we'll see if it pays off for them. I'll give it a chance through gamepass.
That's the one! Never felt so disappointed at a game reveal dude. I'll admit I didn't give it a chance, but that just wasn't interesting to me.C&C a braindead shooter? I only know of Renegade. Never played it but thought it was cool seeing the franchise in 3D.
looks better than Eternal to me it has more variety! Eternal was exhausting and the only thing that it added was jump jump jump shoot! I dint make it far in the game it got annoying quick, good thing I got it cheap usedPretty substantial step down in gameplay compared to Eternal. Could still be fun and I'll definitely be playing it day 1.
It's so static and slow. It lacks verticality, intensity, need for weapon variety, and glory kills ripping and tearing. DOOM Eternal has the best SP FPS gameplay ever. This looks like Serious Sam 4 DOOM reskin.looks better than Eternal to me it has more variety! Eternal was exhausting and the only thing that it added was jump jump jump shoot! Looks like a massive stepback from Doom Eternal.
Still have purchased the premium edition but I'm so disappointed.
The game also looks like it has been heavily downgraded.
Looked way better in this footage.
I dont have to play every new game to see if its ass or not. This is a potential game of the year I am sick of all the people complaining about it who never even played it.
Getting Assassins creed shadows and Kingdom come 2 vibes all over again. Hating for the sake of hate because that's what the hive mind collective tells you to do, then the game turns around and makes record sales and players.
to each is own I guess! It's so static and slow. It lacks verticality, intensity, need for weapon variety, and glory kills ripping and tearing. DOOM Eternal has the best SP FPS gameplay ever. This looks like Serious Sam 4 DOOM reskin.
Edit: lack of dash/dodge is evident.
Agreed. I’m still looking forward to playing it, but it just takes away what I loved about Eternal. I can understand that if somebody didn’t like eternal’s frantic, coked out gameplay then this would be a welcome change of pace.to each is own I guess!
As someone who did love Eternal’s frenetic combat loop, especially when they threw everything at you in TAG part 1, and the Master Levels… I am glad to see them trying something different and experimenting. I believe Hugo Martin stated during an Eternal playthrough that such was what iD wants to do with every new entry that comes along in the series. I can see how TDA would not favor everybody though, and that’s perfectly fine.Agreed. I’m still looking forward to playing it, but it just takes away what I loved about Eternal. I hope they’re big. With no verticality I’ll enjoy exploring them more.22 levels in this game, which is considerably more than what was in Eternal, and that game felt nice and lengthy. TDA is gonna be BIG.
I hadn’t considered that. Hopefully! Maximum bullet hell on Nightmare and above.I hope they’re big. With no verticality I’ll enjoy exploring them more.
I wonder if difficulty affects enemy counts in the levels like classic doom.

Doom Eternal is a big game but bigger does not always feel better.22 levels in this game, which is considerably more than what was in Eternal, and that game felt nice and lengthy. TDA is gonna be BIG.
Here’s the game at 150% speed.
Edit: orange and green projectiles are going to be a big problem for me. I hope we can customize the colors.
There's a lot of comparison with Modern Warfare 3 open world mission objectives: 'Go there and blow up 5 portals'

I'm sorry to say it, but I think that's exactly what they're doing. I feel like they're slowly leaning more and more into them sharing the same universe. At some point they'll have to step away from DOOM games, and I think that's gonna be when they revisit Quake. For the longest time Quake Champions was their excuse for not doing that, but the game has been on life support for a long while. I'd love to see a new Quake, as I love both Quake and DOOM VERY much. But I'm definitely worried about Quake just going down this weird "power fantasy" path like DOOM has.I don’t hate the change in gameplay loop, I actually think that’s a positive move, because the focus on lateral movement and projectile avoidance is very reminiscent of the original games. I think the projectiles are too slow in these previews so I want to see how fast you can make it and I’m curious as to whether increasing the speed of projectiles also increases your own.. as the chainshot weapon doesn’t feel very impactful and seems too slow.
A shmup design is fine if you can really scale the difficulty up but I don’t know how I feel about the parry system and I really don’t like the titan and dragon nonsense. Parts of it feel a little too Xbox 360 era in their design.
Apparently Hugo has said that the Chainshot weapon comes from an alternative dimension and I REALLY don’t want them to connect this world to Quake. I get the sense that Hugo never played the original Doom games or Quake despite what he says, and while I don’t have anything against them injecting some of the D&D inspirations into the series, what they’ve done with Doom.. particularly with Eternal.. feels too Hollywood and pedestrian for my liking. It isn’t metal or dark. It’s comic book shit.
I’m holding out hope though. This is just the first round of previews and I don’t think we have seen enough to for me to condemn it outright. I’ll still play it on GamePass and see what it’s like. But I’m happier than ever that we have the source code for the original games and Quake 1 and a near unlimited amount of community content for them.
Edit: orange and green projectiles are going to be a big problem for me. I hope we can customize the colors.
Doom 2016 was is the first in a rebooted franchise, going back to roots would imply it went in a different direction in the first place. If you want to be technical, according to the developers themselves, Dark Ages is taken from OG Doom with the Horizontal/Strafing style gameplay and more like OG Doom than 2016.An established series ignoring formula is what's senseless, actually.
