Dota 2 Beta Thread: [Brewmaster]

I poked around the Dota 2 Wiki and I don't quite understand what this game is about. It looks like an RTS, but you're actively controlling a handful of "heroes" or "villains" instead of an army? Are the characters in the OP the only units in the game, or are there other generic units and these characters act like the Jedi or Sith in Star Wars Battlefront? I'm just shooting in the dark here.

Link is at the bottom of the screen. Its 2 years old but it explains what these DOTA games are all about

This is the link to click on if you cant find it. (on the bottom)

me and uchip played the stupidest game ever

constant buy backs from a tinker, sniper and furion who were constantly tping and pushing all the lanes

only won because of one huge push

ugh i wish there was a surrender button. just played a match and my whole team quit and it was 2 vs. 5. Wasn't even slightly fun...wish I could have hit the concede button.

If someone in the game has "abandoned"; you can leave the game and the only thing that you will get is a loss in your stats.

I just played a game where 2 people quit from my team when we were clearly going to win. I shouldn't get a loss for shit like that.

The Sven on the ENEMY team quits. Then the razor and skeleton king on my team decides they can use that as excuse to bail out. Not noticing that we had 3 strong carries and they only had 1. And we just started winning teamfights too.
People are just so dumb.

He clearly means on the team of 5, since 4 is even.

Why are you able to disassemble Shiva's Guard? Its not like you can make it by mistake, its a recipe item.

take the 2700g item to make a sheepstick. IIRC you can disassemble manta and mjolnir as well, useful for getting the ultimate orb and hyperstone, respectively.

I, uh, guess. But there are tons of items that would benefit from being able to disassemble them later game, Shiva just seems random.

Edit: Ah, thats right, those other big items can be taken apart too. I do wish there were more items you could take apart, would allow you to change up your build easier.

"My first round of DOTA 2 felt like starting a breezy game of checkers, then realizing halfway through that I was playing interdimensional Star Trek chess against opponents that were waiting for the perfect moment to reveal that the drink I ingested ten minutes earlier had been poisoned."

Golden.

That would completely remove much of opportunity cost for building items. if you can canibalise 80% of it and build something else, it doesn't matter what you build early.

Which is sort of why I don't like why those 3 recipe items can be taken apart. But I guess its not my choice.

SomethingAwful made "A Beginner's Guide to Dota 2"

http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/dota-guide-valve.php

:P

While (somewhat of) an exaggeration, that "guide" really highlights what I think is going to be the most interesting challenge facing Valve that nobody is talking about: How can Valve engineer Dota 2 to overcome the immense skill and knowledge barrier for the majority of new players?

In my opinion, this is really what is going to define Dota 2 as a product that moves the genre forward, moreso than any other feature. Valve talked about it in the past, but I don't really think we've seen much progress in that regard. (To be fair, though, at this point in the beta those sorts of features aren't really a priority. I am just interested in seeing if they'll ever be addressed in the future.)

As far as I can tell, as it stands, Dota 2 is perhaps the most perfect realization of the original Dota. I think it will do just fine selling itself to the previously established Dota audience. I also think it will act as a vehicle to popularize Steam in the east. Beyond those two accomplishments, I'm questioning how Valve intends to expand the audience beyond anything LoL could do while also maintaining the mechanics, balance, and integrity of the original Dota gameplay.

(Or, perhaps Valve will decide they're okay with just becoming the de facto Dota game within the established Dota audience. And that's perfectly fine.)

Just got done playing my first match.

Went 7/5/7 as Mirana, was pretty fun. Venomancer and Prophet should never be allowed on the same team. We were getting our shit pushed in all game long.

Was still super fun though.

Beautiful game and it still runs better than HoN on my machine.

I think one thing that would help ease new people a lot is if Valve can do a really good job match making. Put new players with new player, so they hopefully won't get yelled at too much. Also, some good tutorials. I don't think they will be playing around with the core game play at all.

I think the lack of a tutorial is by far their biggest problem right now.

The way the game is set up is very counter-intuitive.

A tutorial would help or an easy way to access guides from the in-game interface. I had to have my little brother (who has played way more dota than me in the past 2 or so years) help me along because I had become so unfamiliar with the game I didn't know what to buy. How to play I was okay but the item shop is overwhelming as hell at times, even if I do remember maybe 40% of the items.

I'm hoping they do some per character tutorials also, and if you want to get really crazy, item tutorials. Maybe even some in depth tutorials on mechanics.

Seriously. This should be their biggest concern now.

When I started Dota 2, I had limited knowledge about it since I played Dota for a few weeks with my friends. Back then I didn't really bother to learn much of it, so I just played for the sake of playing, and my friends and I did horribly and lived with it.

Dota is quite harsh with the learning curve, and when you play Dota for the first time, you have so much stuff to go through. It's a little overwhelming to think that you need to read Wikis, guides, and tutorials just to get a grasp of what Dota is.

It'd help so many new players if Valve could put up a very decent tutorial section to help people out that are overwhelmed with how much they have to read up on.

I'm pretty sure someone found files about tutorials like pudge hooking a while back. I'll be surprised if Valve isn't planning extensive tutorials like this.

tutorials are cool and all, but dota is a game where you need to get messy before you actually start learning how to play. that's something a tutorial can't replicate.

I agree with the tutorials/guides bit. With Dota 2, I think Valve should make players question why they ever had to have Playdota/Mobafire/whatever minimized on a browser while playing. That sort of information and functionality should be seamlessly integrated into the interface and gameplay.

A step beyond that would be context sensitive streamlining. For example, if a player is playing against Rikimaru, the item shop might highlight items needed to expose invisibile players. Character-specific (like the Pudge one) and scenario tutorials would be nice, too. (Although, it almost makes me wonder if the sheer amount of tutorials needed to communicate all of the immense data and information might, in itself, become yet another barrier for new players...)

But even all that is just the bare minimum, IMO. Dota has, imo, one of the greatest barriers to new players, and I think this is really a golden opportunity for Valve to innovate not only in the Dota space, but in the field of intelligent communication and learning, or, at least as it pertains to games.

Stuff like coaching in TF2 is the kind of advancement I'm talking about, but it's going to have to be even greater and forward-thinking to work in Dota. It's an enormous challenge, and one that'll be interesting to observe Valve tackle regardless of whether one is even interested in playing Dota at all.

Half the time you can't get messy because you're fighting with your team about how much you suck and should quit. It's better to go in prepared than face a bunch of elitist jerks who have nothing better to do than waste your time.

"Getting messy" is exponentiated by lack of knowledge. That's something a tutorial can alleviate...

I could see Last hit/deny training being extended to all heroes. It's a good start but a lot is still missing.

I imagine they have a lot more internally that hasn't went out into the client.

I do imagine these tutorials have priority though. They really need some up before the impending open beta.

Pudge training is clearly being fast tracked for Pudge Wars. >_>

Best thing they could do is have an in-game, indepth Wiki.

If SC2 can do it, Dota 2 can do it.

I can't believe there are people downplaying the importance of tutorials for this game. There's nothing more important for the genre than easing the new players into it, and tutorials are only going to help.

Yeah, I have no idea why some people still don't want some really in depth tutorial system.

There are people who are looking forward to Dota 2 because Valve took over it, and some of those people never played Dota before.

There's still a lot of things I'd like to learn, and can't wait to try out other heroes when the tutorial system is put into place.

On a side note, Dota 2 is the first game I've played in 2012, and I just had a great match with Riki. Feels good :3
