Warning: If you are new to this game, be careful – you WILL suck. This is not Team Fortress 2. The barrier to competence is long and frustrating. There’s a lot of information to absorb, a significant amount of it unintuitive. But we're here to help!
Updates: Updates to the game occur every Wednesday at approx. 5pm PST, patched to the Test Server. This is then patched over to the actual game on Thursday.

The following list is only an approximation of what role each hero fulfills. Every hero can be played in a wide variety of ways. The meta is always evolving and innovation is the greatest strength you can have.
If you are new and interested in learning how to play a hero, use the guide resource hub up above to look up what skills to level, what items to purchase, and what role to play.

so I'm starting to see what y'all see in this game

despite the fact that I'm ASS and feed like a lunch lady.

I think it's a game where your best experience is playing with your pals against another team in a lan setting. Obviously now with Dota 2, you can easily replicate that online thanks to Valve. Once you're get much more familiar with the game, you really have to try Captain Mode.

Anyone else having problems with the hero builds? I keep getting errors when I try to check my builds out.

Also, fun match with Gaffers today:

I was the resident noob but I had a great time. Sorry I didn't steal very many (good) spells... was only my 2nd time using Rubick. I really wanted that RP but never got it.

WTF you have a limited amount of commends/week.

Also you can't commend and report the same person.

Also you can only pick one commend type. . . .

What exactly do commends do? If I see someone with way too many, they are obviously telling people to commend them all the time.

why do you even give a shit

Well I understand reports being limited, but commends. . . .

Nothing. It's not even e-peen, it's just hey - this dude is a helpful person - his ingame homepage should reflect that.

Tried Pugna today. He seems pretty effective with his AOE and decrepify. I didn't really use the ward that much but I managed to get 1 or 2 kills with it. I found the fact that his ult has no cooldown with the scepter to be quite useful.

There were times when I was stunned out of it and then resumed draining as soon as I was able.

However, it doesn't seem to be strong enough to stand up to a farmed carry's damage output which makes sense.

His decrepify also is somewhat problematic as it prevents physical damage dealers from being able to harm the target. I ended up denying my teammates their damage a few times because I forgot this.

I think his most important aspect lies in his Nether Ward and the fact that you can deal a lot of damage to heroes like Skywrath mage with it.

I probably won't pick him that much from now on since I think there are other heroes effective at doing what he does with his first, second and last abilities.

The ult with ags is broken. If you can solo mid and rush the ags - its a joke.

Hell no, son! They're like giant freak ghoul limbs, and they animate so well. You can feel the verve on every single auto attack.

We tried, they just saw it coming a lot of the time and had the team there. Maybe I was too hesitant with Blink+Skewer?

I meant more like taking Rosh and trying to break base with aegis, force a teamfight. Those failed ganks sooo much time.

Mad at myself for letting this game drag on, should have ended 15 minutes earlier. Forced to fight early because Viper too busy split pushing (role reversal?), totally spaced out on microing bear, had to rely on 2 aegis to take 2 sets of rax for the win: http://dotabuff.com/matches/188546740

Skywrath just happily nuking me from afar, ugh.

Interesting build on the Anti-Mage.

If I cast repel on any hero channeling, does it stop them?

Interesting build on the Anti-Mage.

It was well thought, since Lifestealer can easily out farm him without spending at least 15 mins just getting a battlefury. Plus the bash and mini-bash help against the magic immunity.

+1 on Pugna looking bad.

He's probably one of the worst hero designs in the pool, dude looks like a generic, off brand Lego piece.

I was actually thinking this to myself yesterday... just his head/face mostly

I think he just needs an updated model. He's been here since at least International 2011 (and if I remember correctly, he was picked in the very first game of the tournament) and has yet to get a new model. He looks outdated, especially against some of the other heroes that have been in that long and had model updates (Vengeful Spirit, etc.).

A few more heroes that could use model updates: Axe (doubtful because he has cosmetics), Puck, Clockwerk, and Tinker off the top of my head. The designs of these heroes (including Pugna) are all fine in my opinion, they just need better models. Also Nature's Prophet could use a new model too. Something about his face just doesn't look right in his portrait.

For some obvious differences of old vs. new models, look up the old models for Vengeful Spirit, Earthshaker, Enchantress, Pudge, Dragon Knight, Slardar, Beastmaster, Anti-Mage, Riki, Lion, Windrunner, and Broodmother. The difference on most of those will be like night and day.

On that note, remember when people complained that they changed the colors of Witch Doctor, and later Lion?

Oh man. So this game had a tri-lane on our side that was dominating pretty hard, and I was doing decently mid as WR (randomed) vs. OD. Then all of a sudden he gets 3 triple kills (due to ult) within ~5 minutes of each other and spirals out of control from there. Our hardest "carry" was Juggernaut, who died about twice as much as he killed, even though he had a good amount of assists/

By the end the OD has such huge mana pool that the last fight he one shots us all with his ult by using it on Jugg or someone with a shitty mana pool.

The game before a mid Lich dove my tower to kill the bottle I was crowing (which was pretty big, didn't realize exactly what happened and couldn't confirm until I checked the replay just now), but gave up first blood in the process. Kind of a dick move on his part.

For betting on Tomorrows matches, Going to take a bit of a risk and bet that EG can actually beat Navi, especially with Navi's attitude of not caring about smaller tournaments.

I want to say Liquid is a sure win for their match with Empire, but the new line up does leave me doubtful. Oh well, just a bunch of Executioners Belts on the line, no big deal if I lose.

They really need to do something about the menu particle memory leak. I've been on the International theme for awhile now and it still happens - you have the game running more than an hour or two and everything slows down when you come back to the menu. And the computer I'm playing on has more than ample RAM.

You don't seem to understand how ODs ult really works.

The damage ODs Ult does is dependent on his Int, not his mana (His Q is based on Mana Pool). Also, it does different amounts of damage to each person, it isn't based off of one person's int. At max level, it does the difference in int x 10 in damage. So if OD has 100 int, and you had 50 int, it would do 500 damage. If you have more int then OD, it does no damage. Also, if you are close to OD's Int but not over it, it will also burn the bulk of your mana pool.
