A surreal painting come to life, Keeper is a stunning puzzle game that carefully balances its moreish mechanics with a heartfelt story.

Keeper is Double Fine at its most confident: a visual feast, a tone poem, an exploration of movement mechanics, a fable about the world and what we owe to it.

Double Fine have made a lovely game here, one that throws in the sorts of surprises that only this medium can achieve.

Keeper is, ultimately, just a long, linear walk, banking on its meticulously bizarre game world to enthrall players to keep stepping forward, and it's very much successful at that.

Ultimately, with all the turmoil at Xbox right now, I'm pleased to see Double Fine have the chance to create something esoteric and original, rather than a remaster of an existing game. And for that reason and more, Keeper is worth experiencing over a weekend to immerse yourself in its art, world, and creativity.

Keeper captures the essence of Double Fine, packaged in a heartfelt and surreal world where you never quite know what will happen next.

Keeper is less a game than it is a playable art exhibit with light puzzle elements. But it's short and digestible, very pretty to look at, and satisfying enough to justify playing it if you have an active Game Pass subscription.

Double Fine is such a boon to this industry and we need to keep studios like this alive.

The more weird, experimental, personal projects that aren't so concerned with ROI or long term player engagement or all that bullshit, the better.

Will play!

While this is great for me I don't think that's going to help DF. It would be nice to see some player demographics.

Well, Xbox greenlit a weird, esoteric project centered around walking around a psychedelic world as a lighthouse. If they're disappointed that this doesn't have mass appeal, then that's just another failure on them I guess.

Double Fine is a treasure that I always hope keeps making games. Save from Brutal Legends, I've always appreciated their games. Given their quirky and innovative approach to game design I think they would be better suited as a studio under Nintendo. They would find better success on Switch imo instead of Xbox. MS will probably close DF like they did Tango.

My first assumption was that double fine was targeting...the types of folks that really enjoy The Sims, Candycrush, and those "find the difference between these two images..." people.

Being a rather linear puzzle game seems to be right up their alley...but I don't know how many of those folks have GamePass.

I am in the same boat as Topher Topher , for such a "darling" studio like DF to get very little exposure for this (again...I might just be aged out of where they are advertising) game feels very much off. I am not writing this off as "Xbox marketing in free fall trying to fix all their issues" either. They had plenty of time to try market this.

I think this is targeting more of the demographic that loved games like Journey or The Outer Wilds or maybe What Remains of Edith Finch.

Very good ratings. It always helps generate attention for "special" or "niche" games, and DF usually delivers. Personally, the art and graphics alone had my attention. Similar feelings to those I had with South of Midnight, which I quite enjoyed.

I agree, but how is Microsoft even trying to get to those folks. All three of those games, while successful, were successful on other platforms.

Just trying to figure out how they are pushing this game, more of a curiosity than anything else. I think I will enjoy it as I stated above but I am not the player they need for this type of game.

Honestly, who the fuck knows with Microsoft. I doubt that they even know

To me, this is exactly the type of game one would expect from Double Fine. Weird, quirky, fun. So why bother acquiring Double Fine to create exactly the type of games you bought them for, only to hang it out to die.

84 on OC, on-par with many high profile AAA releases nowadays.

Working fine here, boss.

It's glitching out. I checked on the app and it says to upgrade, included with Ultimate. I am on Ultimate. I'm sure they'll work it out soon.

I expect Double Fine will be cranking out games pretty quickly, similar to Obsidian. They definitely have more coming.

Maybe Mr Booty and co have had these discussions with them but I don't think they would do a disservice to Banjo or even Conker. Two IP there that could potentially be good additions to the first party rota

Interested but was kinda hoping it would be a 10-12 hours thing -- $40 CAD for 5-6 hours game is still a bit of an ask. Will wait for a sale, and also to hear how it performs on Steam Deck.

I wouldn't say no. But they strike me as the kind of studio that took that MS buyout and said, now we can literally do the absolute weirdest shit ever that no publisher would ever greenlight. They probably have a bigger Schafer game and that other rumored game in the works now.

Looks like Xbox System Software is as much of a mess as Windows 11.
