Drag-on Dragoon 3 producer acknowledges that the lack of core sequels is a problem

Edit:
There's something that should be noted about the story that AnimeNewsNetwork put up. What they quoted Shiba on is not entirely accurate. He is speaking about how Square Enix has not been making sequels to core franchises like those mentioned, and that it cannot continue this way, because they're neglecting the core market. The implication of course is that Drag-on Dragoon 3 is a sequel to such a core franchise, and they're hoping to satisfy fans who have been waiting for such a sequel.

This doesn't really change much of the "LOL FUCK SQUARE ENIX" stuff, clearly, but he isn't saying that there aren't any plans to make sequels to the franchises mentioned, simply that they haven't done so of late (which is already obvious to everyone).

It's a 1-month old interview with Takamasa Shiba (producer from Square-Enix) in which he states:

In an interview with the game news source Famitsu, Taro Yokō and Takamasa Shiba — creative director and producer for Square Enix's Drakengard 3 action role-playing game — revealed that the company is not currently making new installments to their Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, or Romancing Saga video game series.

“We didn't think that was good
,” said Shiba, “We made the opinion that if there's a good game already there, why should we leave it alone? After all, the Drakengard series is also a game series for hardcore fans.”

The producer also noted that in recent times, it is easy to see what sells and what does not, and games for casual gamers are beginning to decline. He explains that this was what made him decide to make a sequel to Drakengard after eight years.

EDIT: Sorry to duckroll for bumping the old thread. I thought topic relevancy took precedence over thread creation.

I don't know what to say.

Square-Enix is not working on Chrono, Secret of Mana, or Bushido Blade games.
Square-Enix is not working on Parasite Eve, Front Mission, or ActRaiser games.

etc.

So if tri-Ace isn't making SO or VP, wtf are they working on? More Lightning projects? FUCK OFF S-E

Eventually it seems the only way we will get these titles is if Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft moneyhats it and publishes it themselves.

Duh! Of course not, the teams need to be free for Lighting Revelations: Final Fantasy XIII and they need the PR staff to communicate all the games they aren't localizing.

Wait...Valkyrie profile is a "casual" game and Drakengard is "hardcore"?

AND...AND, they think there's more of a market to sell a sequel for Drakengard over VP3?

I don't want to live in this world anymore.

Ya don't say~!? 8D

All I hope is that maybe, just maybe, Drakengard 3's presence indeed showcases that they're willing to revisit these other games.

Of course, now with the main programmer of Tri-Ace gone? I can only how a new SO or VP may shape up without him, even if SE did decide to greenlight one of them.

Seemed obvious that they weren't working on this.

Just happy that we are getting Drakenguard 3. Nier blew me away and I really wanted more from these guys.

By "we didn't think that was good"

Is he implying that Square Enix thinks that the VP SO and RS series are bad quality wise ?
What he's saying about the Drakengard right after makes me doubt

More like he didn't think it was good the company wasn't making new installments into those series.

So what he's saying is S-E gave away the licenses to SO and VP back to tri-Ace, and tri-Ace are now developing it on their own with another company so S-E really isn't working on any of those series anymore, right?

Right?

you say that and I'm still surprised Sony hasn't done that with all their investment money in SE

Some series that the big 3 don't find it worth in publishing, Romancing SaGa for example really isn't a well known title, so they might want to publish the big titles that are sure to sale.

Of course not, why would they want to make new incarnations of series that people loved and put them in a high position back in the day? More mobile garbage and Lightning games ahead.

Speaking of VP... I'm curious how they'd even make a new game.

They kinda wrote themselves into a wall didn't they? They'd have to do a prequel or... totally retcon the shit outta things.

I really want Valkyrie Profile 3 but if they can't give it the budget and time it needs, I'd rather they not make one at all. Especially given the current situation and direction at S-E.
