Drag-on Dragoon 3 producer acknowledges that the lack of core sequels is a problem

Good, they don't have the talent to make worthy sequals. Do them when they get bought out by a better company.

Give me HD updates of the older games though.

Speaking of VP... I'm curious how they'd even make a new game.

They kinda wrote themselves into a wall didn't they? They'd have to do a prequel or... totally retcon the shit outta things.

Prequel.

VP3: Hrist

Lots of stuff to elaborate on.

Wait...Valkyrie profile is a "casual" game and Drakengard is "hardcore"?

AND...AND, they think there's more of a market to sell a sequel for Drakengard over VP3?

I don't want to live in this world anymore.

Everybody can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the implication isn't as much that they think Drakengard has more of a market as much as it is they think Drakengard has more of a market that will definitely buy the game.

Chrono Trigger
Seieken Denetsu
Terranigma

All easy to make 2D RPG's on relatively small budgets, yet, fucked over.

Two of those three are tri-Ace games though and I'm not sure they lost most of their staff (there IS an issue with them handling cinematics, but VP2 fared better than IU/SO4 so maybe they're just better with more down to Earth stuff?) and SaGa's creator is still at SE and has always been the eccentric, not too widely beloved series of theirs. There's definitely better examples for "they don't have the talent anymore" than those three.

You know, I like Drakengard well enough (though Nier was better in every way) but it's hardly a fit replacement for what VP3 could be. Hell, pretend SO4 didn't happen and take another shot at that. Then again, with SE's current plans it'd probably end up as some social bullshit disgrace to gaming.

This.

Besides, even if they were making them, they would be developed 'regionally' and we would never see them.
That worried me, but now that I think about it... I wonder if it's possible they develop games specifically with some regions in mind, than just translate the rest over as the extra sales would be a cherry on top? Maybe I'm just being stupidly hopeful though, Bravely Default did get skipped over but I guess if that still sold very well anyway it'd make SE give pause to how good of an idea it is to leave most of their Japanese output in Japan.

Or they're going to get into otaku pandering crap and we won't be missing a thing.

What happened for SO4 to be SO4 anyway?
I mean really...
Because if that's what we can expect from tri-Ace nowadays, I'm not sure I'd want them to touch anything anymore.

I dunno I kinda see this as good news.

It means they won't be ruined by incredibly lazy, awful iOS microtransaction cash grabs.

They can cancel their entire lineup as long as they release a next gen Kingdom Hearts featuring Pixar and Star Wars characters. Forget FF13 versus and the rest of that crap, KH3 please.

Controversial real talk: Change name back to Square, appoint Masato Kato as Creative Director of entire company, restart XenoGEARS, rehire Sakaguchi and Uematsu, reassemble Dream Team for future CT project. Fund experimental projects, i.e. The Bouncer, Einhander, Tobal, Brave Fencer, etc.

Stick Nomura back to doing background touchups on games.

Instant win.

Who actually wants another Star Ocean title though? They can't make any titles that take place after SO3, the last hope was ..... not very good.

and with the twist from SO3 it's not like anything you'd do in the game would actually matter.

While I like those people, I don't think Sqaure Enix's answers are in bringing back old talent to try to repeat past experiences. They need fresh, inspired talent. Remember, we didn't play these games by Sakaguchi, Horii, etc. because of who made them at that time, we played them because they really grabbed us. They need to find people who can do that magic again.

What the fuck does Square-Enix even work on anymore?

All that is mainstream.

Little do they know not touching anything other then FF and DQ means none of their other fantastic IP's will ever be mainstream.

Ergo, do something with them.

lol @ caring about the story.

Star Ocean has an amazing battle system. That's all I want. Different situations for me to explore an awesome battle system.

Remember when Square used to be your favorite game company?

It's weird because I don't dislike XIII all that much. Hell, I can even get around Toriyama sinking two of my favorite franchises if the rest of the company did good work. But The World Ends With You was almost five years ago at this point.

And it just makes it really depressing when I realize that the only things I'm excited about on SE's non-Eidos side are HD Remasters of decade-old games.
