Dragon Age: Veilguard releases with over 70k concurrent players on Steam and 'Mixed Reviews'

Dragon Age Inquisition was a big, bland, boring game in 2015. I can't imagine why anyone would want to play that with a worse art style and even less depth in the gameplay. Not to mention the writing. It shocks me this wasn't an even bigger failure.
It came out when there was very little coming out after the initial onslaught of beginning of the generation games. 12 million is still great though.

Was reading comments about this on Reddit, and saw this one

"There's a scene where you kill a dragon and save the world. Rook then says "We owe this victory to her" you suddenly get corrected, and told to use "they/them", and our character apologizes and is thankful for being corrected. You'd think the end of the world, and the dragon kill, were a bigger priority in that moment"

Sounds hilarious, I'd love to see a clip :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Can anyone who played it confirm?

This. It was a shit game and it was obliterated by the Witcher 3.

Just play Dragon Age: Origins and be done with it.

Hmm. Wukong was at 2mil concurrent on day one, and by day 2 had sold 8mil units.

So extrapolating out, it can’t have sold more than 500k units on pc at launch (including , it’s already down to 5th top selling, so it’s not gaining substantial new sales already).

For some games 80k concurrent would be amazing, but for this I can’t see how it will come close to profitable, and I imagine the execs are in panic mode.

This is a $200-250mil game. It’s been in dev for 9 years, by a very big (headcount) studio. They also pulled in their mass effect team to also work on it. There’s just getting around that it’s in that range. A range that’s also quite public knowledge as being the ballpark for big AAA western titles in 2024.

a 200 mil budget would need about 6mil sales just to break even, and the steam numbers (nor its current trajectory) just aren’t suggesting sales of that level.

That’s also excluding marketing costs, and this has been marketed heavily. So what? Another 100+ mil?

It’s obviously not the scale of disaster of something like concord, but is more akin to something like guardians of the galaxy.

Theyve alienated too many customers, but even then, it’s more a symptom of studios simply spending far far too much money. When it gets to the point of needing best part of 10mil sales to have a positive ROI, you’ve fucked up imo. 🤷‍♂️

Bioware's reputation was still strong at the time, even after that ME3 controversy.
? Nah I seem to remember people shitting on BioWare relentlessly for the ME3 endings and especially for Dragon Age 2. Most people had extremely low expectations for Inquisition.

It was a good, polished game that had a lot of mainstream appeal, despite a decent chunk of the hardcore DA:O fanbase hating it.

Why has the term chud become a thing, that shit sounds so cringe. Did incel become too politically incorrect?
And when did "incel" evolve to be used against more conservative or moderate voices when it was always an Elliot Rodger type label? As if these gender confused un-showered anti-social in real life slobs are just dripping in pussy and ass.

Nothing but pure projection. Always.

At this point I kinda want the game to start being more successful and break 100k players just to make some of you mad.

It’s fine to express that you didn’t buy the game and why. That’s a discussion worth having, especially for a series you enjoyed in the past. Spending hours and days tracking the exact number of players in a single player game so you can try to rationalize gloating about it failing, when clearly it’s doing alright, is just crazy person behavior. Take a break and go play something you do like.

I used to like this place more than reeereee land because it was much more tolerant and way less extreme... now it's just the opposite side of the same coin. Just the way it goes, I suppose.

Diving into the performance of a game via sales or engagement is hardly anything new in the realm of video game discussions. Hell every month we get new data on just that sort of thing. So why does it bother you so much that this game is also a topic of conversation? If you don't want to talk about this then there are other threads. Shouldn't you follow your own advice and do something else than post here?

Hardly. When folks on GAF are no longer even able to mention Veilguard by name then it will be comparable to Resetera.

Breaking 100k isnt even great for a game like Veilguard, even though it might do it tonight when people get home. Its at 55k now on Steam.

People enjoy ragging on bad games when the game has lots of politics in it, and is purposely different than past games.

When you go against history, the product better be good. Or else people will drill it.

A good example of success is Fallout 3. Its as different as it can be. 3D with real time and VATs gameplay. Anyone wanting a classic turn based isometric game would be pissed. But the game was solid and the plot and aesthetics were still the same, just all transformed into 3D. Even the box art is pretty similar from game to game. I dont think Bethesda got politically preachy either 16 years ago.

F3 also sold a ton, so there wasnt any ragging that could happen due to sales dropping either.

But this is the dedicated thread for it? It would've been a different story if this was the OT for it or something.

We'll be doing the same for Stalker 2 and Indiana Jones. This isn't exclusive to Dragon Age because it's controversial.

Will you stop by to browbeat us in the those threads, or are you only in here because we're being mean to the controversial woke game?

when clearly it’s doing alright
How do you clearly know this?

So fans of over a decade's worth of titles are supposed to just stand by and take it up the ass (no pun intended), by a bunch of activist tourists who are using this game as a vehicle to push their message?

True. I guess we're not quite there yet.

Pretty far from it, imo

But this is the dedicated thread for it? It would've been a different story if this was the OT for it or something.

Yep. The thread title makes it clear what is being discussed. And there is an ignore button right there at the top. Just make the whole thing go away if you want.

I would say since 2016, video game and movie studios have been so preoccupied with cultivating a "modern audience" and subverting expectations with existing IPs, that I would almost be shocked if they just "gave the fans what they want".

People think pointing this out is exhausting, but it's getting so tiresome not having much to look forward to in the media landscape. Voicing this displeasure and refusing to fork over my cash is the very last modicum of control I have.

I doubt anyone is obsessively checking the charts, but it is fun to occasionally peak and cross fingers that these flops finally get garbage designers, writers, and managers out of the mainstream. Though I really should have screenshotted the first time I checked Failguard on the Steam chart (69,420).

No way. I refuse to believe that.

So its just another form of sexism and classism. I always knew SJWs were liars they never wanted equality.
Yups, if u think about it, avg guy in 1950s had 0 problem getting good woman(usually virgin or very low bodycount, feminine, submissive, housewife material), now all avg women want top tier men, and they get ran tru by top tier men.
Top tier guys benefit from hook up culture and promiscuity, while women simply get ran tru and lose ability to pairbond, coz by 25yo most of them are alphawidowed(aka they got pumped and dumped by high quality guy and cant forget about him, on top they think they deserve such a guy for a relationship, so never settle with ur avg normal guy, or if they do they will leave/divorce him and make his life living hell :p

TLDR: Western society is totally fucked.

It’s a foolish business decision to put divisive political rhetoric in your game.

You alienate 50% of your potential customers.

Just make a fun game
I'll say they wish it was only 50%. With how much appeal big budget AAA western fantasy games has to people, it should be selling better than Witcher 3 and Skyrim and have ccp in the 500k+ range or more a.k.a more than Fallout 4's ccp at least especially in 2024 compared to 2011, 2013, and 2015. The excuse of Dragon Age not being as big as Witcher 3/Skyrim also doesn't work because Witcher was a very small franchise before part 3, way smaller than the Dragon Age series. Witcher 2 only sold 1.7 million copies after around 1 year compared to even older Dragon Age games that sold 2 to 3 million copies in around a couple of months. Yet when Witcher finally did a big budget AAA fantasy game that's barely known, so many people jumped to it. Because it was a big budget fantasy game without the woke shit and the writing was actually good too.

If they wanna put divisive political and still have it do very well than Elder Scrolls VI would be the one. Because of two big reasons. One is because Elder Scrolls is a modding heaven compared to other games. It's the most modded game in history and the modding clicks with the game better than every other game out there and also more flexible than every other with only the source engine coming close. Reason two is because single player Bethesda game is more about immersive and side questing rather than story compared to games like Dragon Age and Witcher so more people would be able to ignore the disgusting crap in it even if they do put them in for the next one.

For real, breaking 100k would still be within the bad level for this kind of game. That poster should have said "hope to break 300k" instead since that would be considered a good ratio with what Granblue Relink, and Space Marine 2 did with their pc ccp.
