Dragon Quest 9 |OT| Last chance* to shine

Regulus Tera

Romanes Eunt Domus
The last four hours have been spent LMS-hunting.

I wish I could tell you guys I'm tired of it, but the times I actually kill one make me more and more addicted. It's like gambling.

Considering this game lacks a
casino, omg I miss it so much
that's fitting.

I recently had a battle with 4 LMS and ended up taking them ALL down in the first turn. Critical Hit on Metal Slash, Instant Kills on Assassin Stab, Needle Shot, and Pressure Pointer. It was like I had won the friggen lotto; felt like celebrating, but then I realized that would never happen again and felt instantly sad. But then I saw the amount of exp. that gave my party and I was back to happy again! :lol

No Casino?

Was hoping that would be some post game bonus. That's completely depressing. :'(

I also am saddened that there's no mini medal king island castle. The mini medal guy in this game just isn't the same.

I feel kind of fucked up saying this... but Tag Mode should have used Friend Codes. I hate those things with almost every fiber of my being, like anybody else. Still, though. In the U.S. it would have been perfect for the function we need tagging to perform. The events just aren't enough. I think I already missed one at Gamestop.

Maybe as the game ages Nintendo will release some of the tag rewards online?

The event is actually tomorrow from 1 - 4 PM:

Hmm... What is Tag Mode?

And about the place with metals w/ high encounter rate, please tell me it's not an exclusive event or something like this?

Alright, beat the Bowhole boss. Was pretty much a walk in the park; I guess I was just _extremely_ unlucky because no crits at all this time.

I'm similarly stretched on gametime - around 50hrs, latest town is Wormwood Creek. Spent a lot of time in line this morning just farming metal liquids and farming alchemy ingredients.

I love how the final bosses music sounds like something out of the old anime cartoons especially dragonball just sounds so awesome

As a bonus, I was even able to acquire that awesome Japanese treasure map with the ridiculous metal encounter rates.
Just out of curiosity, what separates that map from any other map with metals? Based on what I've read, the best possible scenario would be to get a map with Platinum King Jewels on the first floor, and they'd presumably be on every floor, but they'd still be few and far between because of all the other enemies that come with them.

Yeesh. Musta been a really bad streak of luck. I didn't really have too much trouble with the bosses until
Gittingham Palace.
Level 30 sounds doable if memory serves. I say give it another go.

...you do have a priest in your party, right? :D

Alright so skill points I've found can't be reallocated and well if you change vocations they are pretty much lost depending on the class. Should I be saving these like a Torchlight Diablo game or do you get enough of them/ is it easy enough to level another character (even name it and delete the other one) that it really doesn't matter when I'm under leven 20.

This final boss is pissing me off. He gets random critical hits that kills my healers and buffers, and he attacks like a hundred goddamn times in one turn. What level should I be? Any tips? Fuck this guy, I can't wait to goddamn decapitate his ass.

Maybe low 40s, upper 30s?

You keep class skills from one job to the next, so your spent skill points will nearly always be useful, except for like +healing on a gladiator and stuff.

But besides that, there's eventually an infinite number of obtainable skill points for each character, so it really doesn't matter. If you find yourself lacking the needed skill points for a tree, switch to a level 1 job you don't intend to use on that character, level to 20 or so on metals, then switch back and spend your skill points where you want them.

As mentioned, yeah it must have been bad luck. Walk in the park the second time. (And yes, I had a priest. Lvl35. He died in the first crit. :lol )

My guys are 41-43. He just hits too many times and my priest can't manage everything. Like my martial artist will be at 60% health, so I heal, but then the final boss does an attack that hits everyone, and then crits my mage or some shit. Maybe I just need better gear, but I have no money. Why are DQ final bosses always so hard? I had the same problem in DQ IV.

Lost? not really. Once you make your way down to the 3rd level of Bowhole you won't have any problem whatsoever getting all the skillpoints you need for awhile. Took me a couple days but each member of my party now has 100 primary class/100 shield/100 weapon of choice/100 virtue + a few points spread here and there as needed for job quests.

Whats your level and party, I beat him pretty easily the other day and I was at 40-41. Basically just had my Paladin cast kabuff twice and use forbearance, armamentalist and gladiator with buffed up attack and Life Fource rolled him.

Maybe Im overpowered or something but I was expecting a tougher fight with the final boss and post game
Leviathan
. Everyone was saying they were hard or something.

Up next legacy maps, just gotta finish a few quests.

Are you using buffs and debuffs?

My party is Gladiator, Martial Artist, Priest and Mage. I have my mage cast oomph on my gladiator and martial artist, and my priest casts buff. My Mage also casts accelerate if I have the chance and sap on the boss. Will the mage's Weakening Wave be of any use? I wouldn't mind this battle if I didn't have to spend 10 minutes trekking up to the boss.

After you get to Coffinwell (which you probably already did), you can find Metal Slimes, which can bring you up to level 15 with ease. I used default party members for a while before I realized that I didn't like the hairstyle on one of them, and it was very easy to go recruit someone new and level them up to replace that person.

Skill points you've dumped into the class-specific skills are never wasted, but for the weapon-specific skills, it seems like an effective strategy to concentrate on powering up single weapons to start until they max out. If you have already spread your points out evenly among all the weapons at a character's disposal, then you might want to get those points back by restarting that character, but skill points aren't that hard to come by, and you will probably end up maxing out all of the weapon-specific skills anyways.

I don't think you can go wrong either way.

Are you in the final dungeon
The Realm of the Mighty
?

If so, as soon as you get off of the train and before you enter the front door of the dungeon, to the right, there is a locked door. In the dungeon there is a route to get to the other side of the door and you can unlock it.

If you are looking at the map on the upper screen there is a ledge with a vine leading down to that door. So try to find the path to the ledge.

Makes getting to the final boss a lot quicker.

YES I finally beat the final boss at about 50 hours. I didn't level up from the last time I fought him either, although I did get a badass new helmet for my gladiator and a new headgear piece for my priest. I guess that was the difference? The final boss also didn't get any lucky critical hits in, although he killed my martial artist once. I also got a bit luckier with the timing of buffs and healing. So in short, no random factor screwed me over this time.

Time for the postgame. I can't wait to see what stuff I can do.

Also,
wtf, Corvus just gets to fly to heaven or whatever with his girlfriend? That bitch caused me so much misery, I should be wearing his scalp as my new headgear.

I usually work in healthcare, but today I'm going to be helping out my GF volunteering in a charity shop.

Is it wrong that I'm thinking about all the extra skill points that I'll be earning? :lol

I'm curious about how far into the game I am.

I've gotten

It's nice to have a final boss who's not
the king of the underworld for once.

That said, I feel like Horii tried too hard to evoke what make Psaro so memorable, with mediocre results.

P.S. I already miss
Stella
. :(

Also I still don't have an anwser to
WHERE THE HELL DID GOD GO? The bad guy flies off to Jersey Shore, the flying penis tower is gone, and I'm stuck grinding in treasure map dungeons, while god went off to play some Starcraft 2

Fowleye
answers that question when you engage him.

Apparently he was split apart into grotto bosses. This is more evident if you pay attention to the things they all say. Sir Sanguinus say's he's his blood. Atlas asks "Why did you turn into a tree?" obviously directed toward Celestria.

This game is like Red Dead, so many sidetrack things to do and extremely enjoyable to customize/upgrade your characters.

And my result so far has been

For Gladiator, I got a Warrior with Martial Artist's Psyche Up skill, and used the main character's Egg On skill on them as well. That way, it only takes 2 or 3 turns to get to max tension, giving a pretty good chance that the slime doesn't flee.
For Mage Knight / Armamentalist, I got Mage's Wizard Ward skill, then switched to Warrior to get Metal Slash. Metal Slash hits them most of the time, meaning you don't have to spend ages trying to deliver the killing blow with a Mage.

Obviously, any class that can wield swords can be used instead of Warrior.

Thanks,
my problem with metal slimes is that they always flee even before i can use war cry, and if I suceed to use it, they resist and flee anyway :(

Speaking of those events, will I really be missing out if I don't go? I want all the treasure maps I can get, but if it's something that'll be made available in a DLC quest at a later date, I think I might hold off. Mainly because I'm really effing tired, and the closest store is kind of far away.

No I've been concentrating on either the bottom skill or the weapon so none of my characters are spread too thin. So the weapon ones are either more effective if you choose a second class that shares that skill or a little less when you choose a class without that skill then.

Where are the metal slimes? I've blown right through Coffinwell. Knowing this though I'll probably stick with what I got. Minstrel with swords, Mage with whips, martial artist with fans and a priest with wands.

oh so when your leveling you don't have to use those skills on that class? Ok that helps then. I just wasn't sure about some of my weapon choices so I guess it doesn't really matter.

Has anybody listened to the latest Active Time Battle podcast?

I'm not hugely concerned about spoilers, but I'm not sure if I want to listen if they get too specific.

So my main character is level 20 and I just reached
Alltrades Abbey.
So far the game has been a cakewalk. I'm wondering if I'm actually grinding too much, if there's such a thing.

The bottom skill gives you stat boosts and abilities that you get to keep no matter what class you're in. The weapon skills and weapon-stat boosts are weapon-specific and only apply while you're actually equipped with the weapon you learned them for. If you change to a class that uses the same weapon that you're using, then you can keep on holding that weapon and benefiting from it's bonuses. When you put a full 100 points into a weapon, it becomes "omnivocational" and that character can use it in any class.

Where are the metal slimes? I've blown right through Coffinwell. Knowing this though I'll probably stick with what I got. Minstrel with swords, Mage with whips, martial artist with fans and a priest with wands.
There are metal slimes in the quarantomb, to the left of Coffinwell. You can just run laps inside the tomb, avoiding all the useless enemies until you see a metal slime.

You don't need to spend points on the job you earned them with, so you can temporarily switch to some of your level-1 jobs and go bash some slimes for some quick promotions and easy points which you can spend on the classes/weapons you like.
