Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Steam pre-order is LIVE

Whats it like going through the game with mainly using a longsword?

Longswords in DD are more like the greatswords/ultra-greatswords in Souls. Slow, powerful, but in my opinion, not all that interesting outside a select few skills like Arc of Deliverance. Souls-type longswords are just called "swords" in DD. They have a more varied suite of learnable skills and can be used by three vocations who each have a different focus. Viable throughout the full game, as with longswords, but for me, more fun to use.

Longswords (greatswords) did feel a little like the weaker build compared to how effective spells are in this game.

But there is something to be said for when one of your pawns turns your impossibly large sword into a searing weapon of ruin.

Also the giant glowing swords of destruction.

I don't regret choosing the build, and didn't have too much trouble for any enemies/bosses.

DD is pretty forgiving when it comes to how you craft your character. You can beat all of the content with just about any build, it's more a matter of how OP you want to be on a scale from "I do okay with three backup pawns" to "I solo everything in under a minute without taking damage"

A lot of classes fall into that latter category (Assassin, Ranger and Mystic Knight at least).

But would love to just make an entire pawn party instead of renting two

Still buying the hell out of this game

I preordered my copy on GMG. Saved 6 dollars buying it there versus paying the full $40 Canadian on steam.

I don't really get digital game storefronts.

so there'll be a boxed version. any word on if it contains the whole game, just parts, or only the steam installer (as it was with MGSV)?

There is so much room for some rather simple mods what will greatly improve the game. Make the fast travel a bit more "normal", let you have a full pawn party, tweak the exp gain and power curve, remove the bonus exp from playing on Hard.

I remember Hard mode being kind of broken on console versions.

Like, at first it was incredibly hard and a lot of shit one shotted me, but later on, due to double EXP, game ends up being as easy as Normal mode. So you end up playing a Normal mode but with higher stamina costs.

Yeah. The start of Hard is completely insane, but then it breaks in a way pretty similar to how Normal mode breaks.

Could someone link me to impressions of Dragon's Dogma please?
I'm mainly looking for reviews or impressions of the game running on pc or laptops with low specs.

Maybe I misworded but there are impressions from gaming sites that played the game, just because it ain't out to the average consumer doesn't mean review-like copies weren't sent out beforehand :p

These are not out yet either. But there's this from the FAQ:

Q) Will the game run on my laptop?
A) While the game does not officially support laptops, the game should run well on modern laptop systems equipped with a dedicated graphics chip. We’ve played DDDA on late model laptops such as the Alienware 14/15/17 which came equipped with GTX 960M, 970M, and 980M, and they appear to run well at 1080p/60fps (960M may require some adjustment to LOD/draw distance settings to achieve a solid 60fps). wbacon has briefly played DDDA on a 3.5 years old ASUS Ultrabook laptop with a Core i7 + GT 650M chip where ‘Medium’ settings seems to be the sweet spot for running the game at 1080p with a reasonably stable 30fps (or 720p/60 with ‘Low’ settings). Laptops without a dedicated graphics chip will have to further pare down graphics and resolution settings to get the game to run at a playable frame rate. Anecdotally speaking, the game seems to run okay on the aforementioned ASUS laptop when forced to run on Intel HD3000 Integrated Graphics at 720p, 30fps cap, and all other graphics settings set to low. Compatibility and performance will vary depending on other factors so there’s no guarantee; at the end of the day, you’re on your own when it comes to laptops. Capcom does not warrant nor officially provide technical support for PCs that doesn’t meet the official system requirement. If you’re still unsure, search the forums or ask other forum members who may have already tried the game on a similarly spec’d laptop.

Not long now, it's just around the corner. One of my favorite RGS's in a long while. Will try and beat Bitterblack isle again. Only did it once last time, it was very tough.

Is there another section for the artbook? I don't see it, or is it just not active thats why I cant see it.

But can the icons be seen even if not active?

Sorry if it may have caused confusion, what I meant is that viewing them in the store shows 'In library'. I can't actually view them or have them actually displayed in my library if that's what you mean, but I assume no one can until it's released.

Where did you get it from? I haven't been to find it anywhere for less than £19.99.

They were offering pre-orders for £13.85 a few weeks ago, but now the price has gone up to £19.95.
EDIT - Apparently that website isn't allowed? Not sure why, Shop To? Are they banned around here or something?

Having checked my order just now though, I've realised I've had it sent to my parents house. Doh!

Na it's automatic, only one steam code and that counts as a preorder so you get the other stuff, you can check on the store page if you click on the "DLC" pages for the OST and artbook it'll say In Library too.

Wonder if physical keys will be allowed to be entered early for pre-load.

Then again my internet gets upgraded to 200Mbps in the next few days so download shouldn't take too long on Friday.

This is going to be awesome, I never got Dark Arisen on PS3, but I played the crap out of DD (Platinum'd). My assassin was pretty awesome. I know the story is very subtle, but I did enjoy it quite a lot.

I hope the PC version has that glorious intro song.

I'm not sure if I'll join you guys, given that I'm still working on a few dozen games in my backlog, I've also played the shit out of the game on consoles, but a few neat things to know that might help your enjoyment:

- the game is kind of like a watered down action game in rpg form, so approach it the same way as you do with character action games, they share similar design philosophies, experiment with different classes, mix things up will make your experience more enjoyable, if you're bored, try something different, change your class (the game actually encourage you to), variety is one aspect in DD that's lacking (think dmc, where enemies variety were limited but reward you for trying new things)

- you can perfect block a lot of things in the game, including magic spells, some big magic spells are multi-hits so you just need to figure out the timing (the window is pretty huge mostly), it's also why a dude with a shield is the easiest to start with and magic knight can be very self efficient

- assassin's counter works similarly as above, I don't remember if you can counter magic, but you can counter a lot of stuff like attacks by big enemies, obviously it doesn't one shot bigger monsters but it still does damage and it looks like a cool shoryuken and teleport you closer to the mob if I remember correctly

- don't worry about the pawn system/min maxing too much, the game isn't really balanced that well, so just play the way you're having the most fun with, treat it like an action game with AIs that help you, outside of bitterblack isle you could actually solo the entire game, toss the pawns off the cliff if you're finding shit too easy

- there are many small touches in the game, like having a heavy character can weigh down a flying mob when they mount it, heavy characters can carry more items, but they move slower, I usually make a bulky sidekick to carry shit, and it's sorta cool to make big tall characters once in a while

If you want even a slight chance of a sequel and since you seem to have enjoyed the game somewhat given your deep advice you should buy it regardless of your backlog (Its only 25 bucks!).

I bought 2 licenses to do my part lol, I love the combat on this game and I think it really deserves to see another day in a better more polished next generation game.

Man, i started going through my strategy guide for the original game a few mins ago...hype just went through the roof.

This is gonna be a long week. Cant wait to see what first time players have to say once they finally get their hands on it.

I want to go Mystic Warrior or Magic Archer this time around. Should I start as Mage?
I would say go with fighter or strider depending on if you want to be mystic warrior or magic archer, and just switch to the one u want as soon as possible. Wont hurt to choose mage at start either though.

Edit: also, id highly recommend playing all or most classes, because each class their own passives to unlock that you can freely apply to ANY class.

So, pre load is up? Nice. I'll set up some input mapper profiles as well with those item shortcuts for the DS4.
