Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Steam pre-order is LIVE

Been playing Dragons Dogma on the weekend (PC). Runs buttery smooth on 1440p, maxed out settings. My single gtx 970 only shows a gpu load between 40 - 60%.

Game itself is still obscure to me. Only put about 2 hours in!
What sort of framerate do you get if you run unlocked/without Vsync? That's my exact same setup (paired with a slightly OC'd 4790k), so I wonder what to expect. 90+?

This is DX9, right?
Yeah. Store page states 9.0c to be precise.

Nice. I have a similar setup, but you likely have a newer CPU (2500k).

This is relevant to my interests (144Hz monitor).

Welp, hard mode it is. I hate self-imposed rules in games that don't offer enough challenge by default.
I don't think that's the case here at all. Part of what makes this game so great is how easily you can get in over your head at a moments notice.

There are high level ogres and drakes just waiting to fuck your shit up should you happen upon them in the early to mid game. Whether you want to grind out a long battle where you could be killed at any moment is up to you.

Dragons Dogma kinda lives and dies by the difficulty being largely dynamic until you've maxed things out. One moment you can be fighting some wolves and the next moment a troll will appear and what was originally a routine extermination has become a terrifying fight for your life.

Or venture out at night and really get into some shit. There were several moments in the PS3 version of the game where I got caught in the middle of a forest in the middle of the night, and I found myself surrounded by monsters that were only vaguely illuminated by the glow of my spell, dancing around the edges of the light and slipping in and out of my ability to even hit them--much less see them.

Hard mode in DD just isn't fun. At least not at first. You don't have escalation, you just have annoyance.

Also covered in the official FAQ on Steam, but it'll unlock simultaneously worldwide (except Japan, sorry...) on January 15th at 9:00AM Pacific Standard Time.

C'mon Bill, you're killing me here. Push to get it out today. We believe in you.

You got to be kidding me. What bullshit so east coast can't play till noon on release day. This reminds me again why I shouldn't support capcom. Kinda regret my preorder now.

Why is it so hard to release at midnight? Legit customers always seem to be the ones punished on PC.

Kinda, uh. Kinda hyperbolic there, champ. It sucks but 9am pacific is very frequently the release time for Steam games when they aren't large AAA-tier games.

it's probably better for everyone involved if you just cancel your preorder if you lose your shit because of 3 hours

It's actually midnight release here in Southeast Asia... in Saturday.

Be grateful.

I'm actually considering taking a day off Friday. I don't actually think I'll get more than an hour extra to play it as a result (wife and kids take up free time) but that's an extra hour all the same.

I can't believe how much I am looking forward to this. I've wanted this on PC for so long.

I think that's like 7pm over here in Finland.

Alternate hyperbolic reply:
I'm going to have to wait ALL DAY for the game to release! How am I going to survive this cruel injustice!

I've seen much worse. Many Steam games have not been released until around 6pm on release day here in the UK, and the Vanishing of Ethan Carter wasn't released here until about 11pm on release day. But it's a silly reason to justify a boycott. Be patient!

I don't believe that ever happened to me aside from the initial Drake, and one of the first Ogres. Well, that and the early clusters of bandits can be a real pain when you're below level 10, but pretty much after level 10 the game is a medium challenge, if that. The difficulty goes up depending on what level you go to Bitterblack, but it still never becomes a game where "at any moment" you could get into trouble. Also,

difficulty is one of the most exaggerated things about this game. By the time you reach that content, you should have enough gear and experience with the game to where even that stuff is second nature. Plus, it's almost trivialized if you decide to do it
after Bitterblack, instead of before as it was designed.

I honestly don't think DD is supposed to be the sort of game that you die frequently in, anyway. It's save system being the way it is means it's not really fun to die over and over again because you'll be hitting load screens constantly and potentially losing serious progress if you aren't constantly hitting that save button.

There's still a load of tension, I'd say, without dying constantly.

so it never happened... other than those times it did happen. lmao

Oh the tragedy.

Please it's not like it's earth shattering you kids are reading into my post a little much. It's just frustrating steam can't have set release times the game is out the 15th.

It's one of the many problems with PC gaming. The leaked version is out on the net and legit paying customers can't even play till afternoon on release day. But please keep reading into my post as if I'm over here sobbing or some shit.

Instead of attacking me you should probably be calling out all the people discussing a leaked version of the gamer they have. I thought that was a no no around here?

Well, you do come across dramatic as fuck lol.

But yeah, all that aside, I do kinda agree. The damage has already been done, why not just release the game asap? Why do I have to wait till 7pm on the release day? I obviously don't know anything about Steam's inner workings, but I doubt it's impossible to push the release time forward.

Witch hunts kill the discussion tho

Your post deserved the exact response it got.

You just hotkey by finding the item in the curatives list and hitting 1-5.

Haven't tried it with oil or water yet, will try later.

Though IIRC oil and water are tools, not curatives, and won't work. The only tool that works is the lantern.
But you can't see what you have bind on those hotkeys. So you gotta remember it? Someone should make a HUD mod so you can see what you have hotkeyed.
Really? I'm guessing just not whilst using a ds4?
I had that problem too. I'm assuming you're using DS4ForWindows?

1)plug in your DS4
2)start DS4ForWindows
3)THEN start Steam or Origin or any game.

The reason that's happening is because some game bugged out and don't recognize DS4 and emulate it as a Xbox controller, but as a standard controller. So you have to start DS4ForWindows first to not get that bug.

If you still need help. Pm me.

Anyone have tips for the early hours? I remember getting completely rekt by bandits early on when i rented the game

I'm not gonna disagree that it's only hurting the paying customers that folks are out playing the leaked copies and the legit customers not only have to wait until friday but now around the world they'll be waiting for various different timezones centered around 1 time. So like we've seen we have people waiting all the way up until basically saturday to play the game.

Nothing much Capcom can do at this point though, I doubt they can release the game early as it doesn't really happen. And changing the release time zone this close to the ball game would be silly too. I guess you could attempt to unlock it via VPN or something but I doubt that would work in this situation.

There's basically no way to call people out on playing a leak. You--and everybody else--have no way of knowing who has a review copy and who doesn't. Witch hunts are for children, so. Y'know. This is a "problem" that happens with console gaming, too. People get their hands on early copies all the damn time. It's frustrating, but whatever. It's not like this is a new game where someone having it early completely shits on the zeitgeist. Plus, 9am Pacific tends to be "the" set time for most Steam releases that aren't big AAA-funded games.

so is there really a camera mode that allows you to change camera angles?
Yep!

Follow the "main" questlines. They'll push you along decently while also keeping you off the track of those super high level bandits.

Okay, so running is something i should do then. I wasnt sure if I was just the worst at the game or what. Wolves were easy though. Armored bandits ate me

Ain't no shame in runnin'. If you feel like you're in over your head, get the hell out to fight another day.

naah you can definitely kill those bandits

but you have to cheese them, they seem to have some god like defense (the dudes with shields in particular) for a player below lvl10 or whatever level you are at when they make you run down that bandits path at the beginning

If you need to fight bandits early take out the softer targets like archers, dual wielders and mages first from range or by kiting them away from the group. The sword and board bandits can 1 shot you with the lunge attack and are much heartier than the rest normally but are easily juggled after their friends are dead.

Not mad at anyone but I believe I have seen many times previously here on gaf. That people saying they have a game before release use to have to offer proof it's a legit version of the game and not a leaked version.

But yeah I admit my initial post was a tad dramatic but it's annoying how some of these publishers handle steam releases. It's funny how you guys are so quick to attack people.

Also it really doesn't compare to consoles you can buy legit versions of games early not so much on PC.

After finishing Shadow of Mordor, Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 in the past 8 months in eager to get into a new game while I wait for all the good shit to release later this year

But im seeing a lot of talk about the game only having controller prompts on screen

As a KB+M person this worries me. I dont want to spend $30 on a game that I cant play without a controller

sad.gif

the amount of people that can get a release game early is minimal as fuck though. In the US is all but nonexistent now that mom and pop shops have nearly disappeared and the major retailers have systems that prevent the person from selling the game.

I really, really doubt that is true. Just in case it is, Steam refunds are a thing nowadays.
