Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Scather, Challenger works really well.

Avoid High Bolide/Maelstorm though, fucking take forever for NPC's to cast and what's worse is that they try to do it so often.

I gave my pawn the Wyrmking Ring (reduces cast time) and stacks with the augment to reduce cast times. My pawn casting High Bolide/Maelstrom isn't too bad.

Restarted as a mage, I died when I ventured out at night because I couldn't quite get a hang of the healing spell but I'm already enjoying the game far more than I did with the ranger. This is much more the type of thing I was looking for rather than the DMC style mash-fest of a more melee based class.

I guess I screwed up then, I gave it back :(

But it is, 360 if you can stand screen tearing, PS3 if you can stand a few framerate drops.

To add: I have a ps3; framerate drops few times when things get hectic for me, sometimes the audio even skips. I still don't mind. I've seen some screen tearing for 360, i honestly wouldn't mind that either, it isn't all that bad. But thats just me. I don't think you can go wrong on either choice.

ahahhaha, prepared to head out, ran outside to be greeted by a random Griffin, took out 70% of my hp in 2 hits then it flew away, fml

Edit: hahahaha holy shit it won't leave me alone, I'm just trying to get to ancient quarry, leave me alone

Fucking Griffins are bitches.

Not counting the quest related one, I've only killed 3, over 3 different playthroughs: 2 the first time; 1 the second; and 0 the third.

It's always:

"There, Master! A Griffin!"
*Griffin swoops down and picks up an Ox or just lands for 2 seconds*
*Griffin flies away. Forever.*

Its official. If I didn't love this game before, I just adore it now. Its good to feel compotent, mixing curatives and tools for the benefit of the team, and everyone working together for something amazing to happen.

Speaking of love. I have man-crush on my own creation. He just knows what to do. Was heading to Blue Moon tower, and fought the Golem in the pass, after I shot out its chest and hand piece I was attacking the foot, and he was attacking the head. The mili-second instant the Golem got up, the A.I knew it was going to stand before I did, he walked around calmly and started an all out assault on the glowing piece in the middle of its back before it could stand up completely and annihilated it. I just stood and watched in awe and the arrogant bad-ass I created.

Man-Crush.

Hmmm, think I might restart as a mage then, the combat in this game is some of the worst I've ever played - the only way I'm going to make it through is if I don't partake in melee at all!

I must ask: am I doing it wrong or is the general tactic just to mash the attack buttons as much as you can until the enemy is dead, because there is absolutely nothing else to do as far as I can see, no strategy at all, it's just mash, mash, mash.

You're doing it wrong. The combat in this game is the best I've played in a long time. What vocation are you doing that's giving you problems with melee? I'm going to take a guess and say strider?

Strider's are not a particularly strong melee class, whittle down enemies with your bow attacks before approaching. They're the best starting class for killing large enemies, either by scoring hits on the weak spots or by climbing attacks. They have the fastest movement speed when climbing and can use scarlet/hundred kisses when climbing, doing massive damage. Pure melee against mobs is not going to work because daggers don't stagger enemies well and striders cannot wear the heavy armor that give good resistance to stun and stagger. Instead use the skills to knock over enemies or for quick movement in hit and run tactics. Ensnare is great, for example, or combining a flying kick into a helm splitter.

If you want pure melee then use a fighter. The strengths lie with the shield and heavy armor. Use the shield to block attacks, then counter attack upon block. Also, draw all the enemies away from your mages/striders etc.

Most reliable spot imho is just northwest of Hillfigure Knoll, takes a few days to respawn but its how I got the messageboard quest to kill 3 of the bastards done in postgame.

When I checked out the eradication site in postgame there was a cockatrice there instead.

This game is awesome, been having a blast. It's irritating that sword-wielding Assassins can't do cool ninja stuff like the dagger-wielding ones can. No kicks, no double jump or roll, what the hell Capcom. XD

there have to be pros/cons. sword users can roll on knockdown at least, i think that's pretty fun.

Okay, so here's my deal:

My main character was mainly a warrior. I have warrior and now fighter maxed rank. What should I max next? I'm thinking assassin or Magick Knight.

But does Magick Knight require a lot of leveling up in the mage classes in order to be effective or can you play it as a melee class?

Also, for my pawn. She is going to be a ranger, and has now maxed both ranger and strider. Should I put her into any other classes for specific augments and the like? Also, whats a good Augment/Skill set up for a Ranger?

Any help on these questions would be greatly appreciated

You really should play whatever vocations you want to. The stats don't mean much at all compared to the stats of the weapons you will be equipped with. Every character should get the augments to boost attack and defense. They help out much more compared to useless ones like +100 health.

Man f**k the Duke I gave him back the ring lol, wish I had made a forgery. :( I didn't realise it was an actual item you could wear.

I made 2 of that letter and got the reward for both of them though hahahaha.

140hrs I think I've played now, love the game sooooo much.

Some questions, GAF:

1. Is it possible to play this game *completely offline*? I know that the MC and the main pawn levels but do the game also offer generated pawns that scale with your level? (That is, the higher your level, the stronger the pawns generated by the game) Since I am playing completely offline, I cannot rent pawns created by other people so this is very important for me to know.

2. What is the best main pawn for a Strider according to you folks?

1. Yes

2. Any, Strider can take care of everything :D

The screen tearing on 360 is almost too much to bear. Might swap it out for PS3 version. Climbing is way fun. Lots of stuff in hidden places so far.

Yeah, I pretty much never notice screen tearing, but here it's pretty blatantly obvious. Didn't bother me too much though.

If I buy the 360 version, I can get 700-800 achievements in a single playthrough since I know the game inside out, but I'm kinda burnt out on the game right now.

. I swear to God if I end up with her I'll be pissed. Just escorting Maximilian to the Great Wall now, which is where I have to go anyway...but I'll do that tomorrow.

For your love interest, I think the game picks the last person that maxed their affinity for you -- it gave me Julien last time because I just got his shield prior to meeting the dragon. lol

Why the hell did I have the bald noble as the main guy I care for?!?!?! Just had some Arisen Bald Noble love, how the hell did that happen!? I was helping out that one girl the duke was into. This some wacked stuff that I get some old bald dude as love interest and I don't know how it happened :/

I was a strider, but you start out the tutorial as a fighter right? I didn't really see much difference in the way you approach things, it's basically move up close then mash - If that's not the case, I dunno - it felt very much like the short time I've spent with DMC and God of War games, you're just watching the sparks. I went for melee since firing off arrows felt futile, I didn't couldn't really tell if I was doing any damage - either I was missing or the amount of damage done was tiny, thank god you don't have to buy arrows!

I restarted as a mage, and spent the night doing a few fetch, escort and clear the sewers type quests and found I've become pretty hooked, and found my niche in the combat - it still feels very clunky and slightly more random than I'd like - but I'm liking what I'm playing. Exploring is fun, sense of danger is there - ATM I have zero sense of power, and the amount of crap I pick up verses what I think to be useful or have any knowledge of why it exists almost equals an Elder Scrolls game, so they got some things right!

An enduring problem is the HUD - There is too much shit on the screen for me - when I see five or six different areas of the screen that beg my attention outside of the main game view, I tune out - All that pop-up text and contextual shit, I've barely looked at my inventory for fear of needing to read a novel everytime I want to see how many small nuts I'm holding! Too much, way too much shit on screen - I would hope this would be the first thing to go or be streamlined in a sequel.

Turn whichever HUD elements you want off, then. It's in the options.

Did you disable subtitles for pawn commentary? That takes up like 1/4 of the screen alone.

Well.....as a fighter you want to be charging into battle but as a strider you don't want to be the guy who's drawing all the enemy's attention. Maybe you don't really enjoy this sort of combat I guess? But since you're enjoying your time as a mage that's good!

Seriously.
he's a big bad-ass Mystic Knight... what are 3 little goblins going to do to him? Even if he's unarmed? lol

Mad me mad because I was specifically going for Quina on that playthrough, but blondie had to pop in there.

Question: how far can I take the main story before I am locked out of the first set of quests? Feel free to spoil away if need be, I want you to be as specific as possible so I don't fuck up. Or better yet, link me to something that tells me all of these points.

The pawn guild quest at gran soren will cancel some of the npc-related quests you get from Cassardis (the one with madaleine at cassardis where you escort her to encampment will need to be done right away I think), I think the rule of thumb is that the quests will open and close after certain plot related main quest, so you should probably just clear them before taking on the next story quest.

The main quests (after the pawn guild quest) are given by Maximillion and another npc later on when you have access to the castle, so do the other quests first before starting those if you want to make sure your quests don't get cancelled. Board quests like fetch quests and kill quests generally don't get cancelled so just pick them all up and check back often.

Someone else could probably be more specific since I just did what I can and didn't really try doing everything for the trophies, so I might've missed a thing or two.

If I'm not missing anything important, you should be free to make it to gran soren to buy better gears, and pick up all the board quests (one at the inn, the guild) and go for witchwood for the Quina quest, once you do the guild quest it will be gone

I had some really bad screen tearing right at the start of the game in Cassardis. I'm now 7ish hours in and I never had screen tearing again. Even Cassardis is free of screen tearing now. No idea what changed. Playing with the game installed at 1080p btw.
