Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

I'll be honest here, you're ridiculously underleveled for that quest. There's an orge halfway down that dungeon, I didn't manage to do any damage to an orge with a strider until roughly lvl 25. And when I did, it was in very slow trickle.

Well, I didn't rush into it. Quite the contrary, I even did the dungeon behind the waterfall before I should have. They should have organized the main quest a little better then :/

I think the game encourages players to do way more exploration before attempting the main quest lines actually.... Have you visited the ancient quarry? It's south west of gran soren, and there's a quest there to clear it. Inside are 3 orges, you can practise orge killing there.

What prevent you from making one if you need it ? Even games based on combining item as a gameplay mecanic ( atelier games ) don't have such feature .. i don't see why dragon dogma should have it ..

Capcom's own Monster Hunter has a combinations diary//journal that records everything you've discovered. It's logical and makes sense. Not having one in a game so full of combining stuff is, to be honest, a bit like not having a quest journal. Sure the old days of writing stuff down in the blank pages at the end of the manual was fun but seriously it would be so simple to implement and probably enhance a lot of peoples usage of the combining system. I can't honestly think of legitimate argument against it. Even yours is just "some other games don't have it either"

Where can I see the ratings that other people give me? I am averaging 3-5 gifts every time I use an inn, so I know people are using/dismissing my pawn, but I've never received a message or a rating.

I so confuse. My Ayane lookalike is so popular but no one wants to give her a star rating :(( sniff sniff

Btw if anyone wants to take my Challenger/Utilitarian strider/ranger for a spin (only level 32-ish), my PSN account is wild_whiskey

I think the game might just be giving you random pity items. I always get random shit and a couple hundred RC, but no ratings, but once in a while I get tons of RC and a real star rating. Check the History menu and it will say how many times your pawn has been hired.

Oh awesome thanks. You could be 100% right!! It would surprise me if other people are even using my pawn that much since I doubt there are too many actively playing in my same level range. And then they have to be looking for a ranger, when most people want mages.

Post game spoilers about DCP and vocation rank grinding:

Has anyone here killed guards in the noble district for dcp/vocation ranks? I've see a couple videos of it and in one the guy is 94 and getting 97xp a kill, while in another the guy is 114 getting 101xp per kill.

I'm only level 54 and getting 71xp a kill. Does anyone have any idea what is causing the difference? I figured I'd be getting a lot more xp per kill since I'm so much lower level than those guys were.

lvl18 is fine for the guild quest, I always do it at around lvl15, he will probably need fire/holy enchantment and some mages to help out though, mages have lassitude and shit that might help, dagger users are kind of weak at the beginning, but unless he's soloing strider, he should be fine. Even then there are enough explosives around.

and ancient quarry is probably harder than the guild quest dungeon lol, I always do that before having to go to
shadowfort
, which is usually around lvl25

You're on the ps3 man, you guys are almost double the number of gens ahead of us 360 dudes. You have twice as many chances to get it done! Also, make sure you actually have builds specifically for fighting the ur-dragons, and test them out fighting it offline. If you can wreck the offline version in a single run in about 5 mins, you're good to go for the online version.

Thats the thing though... i'm a beast with my assassin. I can go in and in the 8 minutes climb all over him, gouge almost every soft spot, arrows to the wings included. Autonomy and every strength boost. Ascalon and carnation, dragons pain and the fey in hand... and i barely see his life bar move at all. My stupid job and dumb kid keep me from 24/7 monitoring ... every time the grace period hits i'm driving 60 down city roads trying to get home just to boot up and get my paltry offerings for my contribution.

Offline Urdragon is a punk bitch. It's been a while since i gave it a shot but i'm sure I could get through his weak points without issues... and my guess is that a 98 PURE assassin should have the atck to make it count. I dunno... guy just drives me insane. Top it all off with fournival getting another fuckin guilty conviction even when i purposefully avoided any guilty evidence and this game is just trying to make me put Uncharted or GTA back in. I refuse!!

Exactly my point, they expect me to memorize all items?...

What do you mean?

I didn't say anywhere, but while ur in town it should allow it, it saves the extra trouble of putting everything on the wh/inv before combining and then taking what you want again.

erm... Again, not sure what you mean by that.

No, I mean a list that shows something like, this item combines with this item to make this item, and in turn that can combine with another item etc.

Lvl 18, I'm currently on the dungeon bellow the pawn guild, I've just been following the main quest, and the skeletons that pop out of the ground I do NO damage. And the Ogres... lol

I've had similar problems with some bandits.

Yea they kind of expect you to remember some of them unfortunately, but not all of them, there aren't really a lot of combinations, it's always the same nuts and wine and herbs so it's like the Resident evil herb mixing. It's easy to figure out even if you don't remember, just click on the item and press combine and it should tell you what items you could use to mix it with, and the results (if you have already mixed it once), it will say "If you have cloud wine, you could make a mature greenwarish with this potent greenwarish!", most of them aren't complicated and it's not really a huge tree to go through, since you will find the materials everywhere, it's not really too much to ask the player to remember a nut mixed with a (insert item you've used before) will give you cloud wine or Balmy Incense, because the player has already done it before, and by pressing combine it will tell you what the other item you don't remember is.

Branches and kindling will always make arrows, books and scrolls can make magic books, etc. (never used them), so there's a pattern, moldy grapes will make red wine with water for example, I thought it's kind of fun to find things like that :p

But yeah I see where you're coming from about the interface.

Try losing some pawns?

The smaller your party, the more XP you gain.

If you're grinding for vocation....you don't want more xp right?

Seriously? How do you take out the orge at such a low level? Orges are by far the hardest big enemy, I can get wrecked even at higher levels! I always do the quarry first, because I like to clear the escort missions first...I get paranoid about disappearing quests.

I think I’ve decided on going with a strider at the beginning. The mage looks fun, but I think I’ll make my pawn a mage....does that sound good for a beginner?

Quick questions. I know you can change classes when you want, but can you change your main character and main pawns face or gender whenever you want?

Also, how exactly does renting a pawn work. How do I let someone else rent mine? If someone else is using her does that mean I won’t be able to use her? : (

I don't know about the ogre, that thing always falls off the ledge when it goes berserk at the end before I get to kill it, I tried resetting but it always falls because it runs around so much, but the entire dungeon should be pretty much around that level since everything else were pretty killable (including the other paths with the mini skeleton boss guy), but I could ask you the same about ancient quarry and the 3 ogres :p

I've always went for that dungeon first at lvl15, and 17 at most when I was soloing MK, ancient quarry has like 3 ogres and you need to actually kill those in a narrow tunnel, there are also bandits, so it's a harder dungeon.

I always go to witchwood and the cassardis well at around 12, 15-16 for pawn guild, 18-20 for chimera killing, and snow harpies then meeting dragonforge guy, and ancient quarry > shadowfort after being done with those in the 20s, then it's just accepting the linear quest progression.

Stupid ogre has never killed himself for me, and the last time I was purposely standing next to the edge hoping he'd jump off. I normally reach gran soren at 15, escort reynard to greatwall, clear the ancient quarry, clear all the other escort quests, and when I'm finally ready to go into the everfall I'm 25-30.

I don't know man, escorting Reynard to the greatwall sound more like an impossible task for me than fighting that ogre lol

Xp scales upwards as you gain levels.

No. but you'll get the names without problems while playing .
What do you mean?
You either :
Know what the item does already ...if you don't make one item and see what is the effect provided .. I don't see what is the problem to at least make one item to see the effect it will do.
I didn't say anywhere, but while ur in town it should allow it, it saves the extra trouble of putting everything on the wh/inv before combining and then taking what you want again.
fair point , but you can put everything in/out of your inventory at once ( Start ) and then conbine from within.
erm... Again, not sure what you mean by that.
My bad i meant to say (Making) not maxing ..
No, I mean a list that shows something like, this item combines with this item to make this item, and in turn that can combine with another item etc.
There is no need for such a list as there aren't that many changes your item can have.. furthermore , once you've tried a new item once , the result item changes from "???" to the resulting name of the item it will make. i personnaly never felt like it needed more than that.

Didn't know that it has been ages since i've played monster hunter ... MH is a game where loot is at the base of equipment ...DD is not ... it's not like there is a lot to combine into the system as it is very basaic and the game does tell you whe you're going to get if you've already made the item before ... i honnestly don't need such log ..
If i could temper properly with my weapon and armor stats , it would be more important but this isn't the case here...

At what point can you start to raise affinity with merchants? I've been after these red over knee boots for my pawn but can't find them anywhere... I guess you can buy them from Madeleine if your affinity is high enough.

Can I just overload here with beast steaks until she decides she loves me?

No. but you'll get the names without problems while playing.
Sorry but there's absolutly no way I will know the difference between a Balmy Perfume or a Balmy Incense or a Cerulean Concoction. Makes no sense for me to memorize the items.

You either :

Right that's my point. Make one item, go completly out of the combine menu (if the item you just created isn't combinable it won't show up, and that's most of them), go to withdraw menu, check what it does. "Nope, that's not it", do over. How does that make sense? Not to mention that you'll be wasting the materials just to see what the item does.

fair point , but you can put everything in/out of your inventory at once ( Start ) and then conbine from within.
Oh damn, I did not know this haha. Will make things easier for sure.

My bad i meant to say (Making) not maxing ..
Then I don't see why that matters. If I haven't made it before just put a "?" in the materials.

So the pawns you summon don't automatically update? You need to release them and summon them again?

That kinda sucks :/

I mean I didn't expect them to update constantly but at least every time you boot the game.

it's there to encourage pawn fluctuation. you will never get gifts and feedback if people stick to one set of pawns for their playthroughs. try to experiment with different combinations.

Speaking of pawn update, their gears update automatically right? I keep seeing "new" when I open up the inventory, so I thought maybe they were equipped with new gears by their owner.

Nope it doesn't. I just asked my brother to check out my sweet equip on my pawn and he said it looked the same. He had to go to the rift, release and summon back to see the new stuff.

i have not played DD for 17 days. now it doesn't let me receive RC when i sleep at an inn. it always says "connection failure" and gives me these random presents :(

If anyone is looking for a Strider pawn, my guy is up. His name is Damien and he is about Level 45 right now. He has been through Fighter/Warrior already and I will be moving him into Ranger when he maxes out Strider.

Play this game long enough and you'll soon realize that all you really need are Potent Greenwarish, Large Mushrooms and Interventives. That's all of the curatives I carried.

Never worried about combinations.

Give her Magick Medals dropped from Golems.

I've put about 15 hours into the game so far and I LOVE it. Started with fighter, maxed it out and I'm now running a mage. Since stats increase based on current role, is this the optimal way to progress to Mystic Knight?

Which class is the best for end game (ur dragon) fighting?

Assassin, IMO. Hundred Kisses while grappling and can get those pesky glowing orbs on its wing tips with the how. Plus the night time and solo augments to boost strength.

Assassins yo!!!

You will not be disappointed.

Seriously, you won't. I have not been this addicted to a game since Skyrim to be honest. I can see myself putting 100+ hours into this game with no problems. With all the post game content, the Ur-Dragon, DLC and the NG+ (which should be standard in almost all RPGs), this game does really well at keeping the player interested and involved in the game.

Has anyone bought the DLC with the 5x exp bow? I'm wondering if you have I on a pawn, the whole party will get an exp bonus.

We can work out an exchange of services. I'll equip the bow on my pawn, you do it on yours, then we can borrow each others' and grind exp.

The thing is I don't want to equip it on my main, or my main pawn, because I'm leveling up as Ass + War on those two for maximum +Atk stats, and it's a long bow which means Ranger only. But if you change to ranger, equip it, then sleep at the inn, someone can hire your pawn. Then you can change your vocation to level up, while the person who hired it retains the gear as it was when you hired them.

Don't worry too much about your pawn vocation – you can change it at any time beginning from early in the game.

Strider is a fun class to play, yes. This is a "can't go wrong" game. Everything is fun.

People can rent your pawn any time. If someone rents her you can keep using her, she'll just report back when that person fires her.

Just started the game. The pawn that popped out of the rift (in the first town) is not the same pawn I designed in the demo. Should I start over or is it a placehopder until I meet MY pawn?

He also has the same name as me for some reason. Is that normal?
