Okay sounds good, basically wanted to know if I would/could be punished badly from any decisions I make early on.

To my knowledge, no. You can always switch classes later, anyways. If you get into a tough spot, you can try hiring pawns that are a little higher in level than you are. And if you're doing really bad, you can use the newly implemented Easy mode, but I doubt it'll ever get that bad.

Also when you switch classes it's not like other games, you keep your level (base strength, defence, HP, etc), but you also improve the classes vocation.

Been playing the game pretty steadily since I got it and am in the early 30s now. I think I'm about done with the first area--I did some small quests and was then told if I accepted the next quest from the Duke all of my other quests would be dismissed, so I declined that quest in order to finish up some stuff.

I've been maining fighter (tested mystic knight a bit but didn't like it much) and I went warrior for a level or two just to get one of the 'take less damage' augments to use as fighter. I can't decide what to do with my main pawn--she started mage and is now sorcerer. She is a nuke monster and raining meteors looks neat, so maybe I'll stick with that. Kind of miss having her heal though.

Couple questions:

Is crafting worthwhile at all? Seems to just make consumables and I'm a consumable hoarder in RPGs--i.e., I *never* use them, they just rot in my backpack.

Is there any detriment to switching your job often? From what I understand, when you level up, your level stats are granted based on the job you are currently using, but does this mean that since I've played around 30 levels primarily as a melee class, I would be gimped if I for some reason decided to go caster? (Or if I made my pawn go melee despite her leveling as a caster?)

Save all the time. The checkpoint system is actually decent for story missions, but for exploring or side missions, it rarerly auto saves.

Crafting is just kind of there, the game doesn't push you to use it since you could just get a healer pawn to heal you, I wouldn't really worry about hoarding consumables, you could always mix enough of them in town and save them for later.

For jobs you still get some magic stats if you level up melee but not as much as mage classes, there are a lot of ways to make the game easy so it's not really a big deal, so play whatever class that you find fun, if you really worry about stats, you could use hybrid class, like... Mystic knight :p

Back to playing after a couple-month hiatus, going for a third playthrough. Still haven't bothered with NG+ because it offers no challenge, so I've restarted again. Rolling a Sorcerer in the model of Marvel's Dr. Strange with a Strider pawn resembling Bruce Banner - soon to be converted to a Warrior Hulk once I get enough RC for green skin pigment and a metamorphosis item. Playthrough will be legendary. PSN is Deified_Data if anyone just starting out wants a low-level pawn crafted by an experienced player.

And easy mode? What the fuck, Capcom? Who asked for that?

Ok, I got a warning that I will be ambushed by my enemies, but nothing has happened for a long time. Is it a specific place or quest that triggers it?

God's had his chance.
Had to take a short break so i didn't burn out on the glory that is Havlock and Dragon's Dogma.... popped in Red Dead Redemption and got to moving through the game while also gearing towards the Legend of the West outfit for the 2nd time ...

The best part? ... more times than I can count now I have been fighting or running or just finishing up camping or something and thought "Damn that's a great shot right there.. i'll just go take a screenshot real quick .... oh wait."

Capcom has spoiled me. Thinking bout loading up my boss assassin for a minute tonight .. .

Stumbling across certain areas of the map at night will trigger the ambushes. I remember that the first one is outside the quarry, but I forget the others,

I'm glad their is an easy mode. It means their is a remote chance my girlfriend can actually play this. Options are good.

Thanks, this is useful for me as well. I'm not usually an item hoarder, but with so many nooks and crannies to explore and so much stuff to pick up, I find my backpack filling up fast! Dumping everything in town, combining, and taking whatever comes out useful has become a good method.

Can anyone tell me if there's any penalty for dieing in general? Do you simply lose progress?

Also, is there any way to remove/adjust the letterbox bars, or are we stuck with 'em?

At night? Damn, I avoid night travel due to not being able to see shit even with a lantern. I guess it makes sense for an ambush.

Might be ambushed .. some place are ambush spots but aren't trigerred

If it's the ambushes that are part of the quest ( someone gave your a warning message ) , then near the bridge that serve as a landmark ( near gran soren ), near the ancien quarry ( north side ), in the mountain pass are ambush spots ( it need to be at night ) ( best for you to have that quest active so you can see the leader..

Hold up, I just beat the dragon and my mind is fucked...

I think my dude made out with Ser Maximilian... WTF I don't remember making my character gay, was I just seeing things?

Although I'm fine without the fast travel a horse would have been handy for all the back tracking. Even if it was a slow horse. Unless their are like infinite stamina potions.

A slow horse sounds like a pretty good idea. What I think would be a great addition is if they added caravans and you have a pay an above decent price for a trip (to prevent abuse use of 'fast travel').

So got a couple questions.
(some of the rooms have other rooms that are closed off. will they open up at some point?)

From my experience, no.

In bold is important
EDIT: Overlooked that parentheses, nothing to add

I think that person depends on who has the highest affinity w you.
My friend had the same experience (actually, me too) where
his character (male) and the shop keeper made out.. and I had a female character making out with Madeleine, I wasn't complaining though lol.

What affinity? Dude gave me quests is all, dafuq is this shit. Ok, it's over now... lol shopkeeper.

You can raise an NPC's affinity buy gifting them, when you first talk to them there's the option to gift by hitting the 'square' button or 'x'. Also, there are two side quests you can raise affinity with (either or both), Selene and Madeleine. I've raised both but Madeleine was the lucky one (which I had no power in choosing)

Lol.. I felt bad for my friend, but it was too funny. That awkward moment when your first playthrough ending turns out like that.

What the hell he's doing there in the first place is another story, chilling in the castle the whole game, then he pops up there, this Maximilian thing scarred my game.

Just to add, I think some are triggered only at night time, I can't remember exactly (I could be wrong).
i already said that it need to be at night ( all of them ) .read my post

See that pink aura when you were talking to them ??? Npcs have this aura when they are at max affinity. In short , even if you didn't do any escort quests as long as you talked to them , that was the result.

If more than 1 character is at max affinity ( affinity level doesn't decrease over time but you can make the level go down by some other means ), then the game pick the last npc you maxed for the end To prevent this , just do the quest to have the arisen bond ( the ring ) and give the ring to the one you want as partner ending. Everything will be right if during the fort assault , the dragon show you "that" ring saying that it's no use... ( yep the scene changes a little )

Yeah I would be weary to have a fast horse, since you still want to feel that danger of having to make your way back to a town with limited supplies in the dark. Like you said with caravans, having a caravan at certain places would help immensely for back tracking. for instance. Like having a caravan show up at the encampment that can take you to gran soren and back would have been great.

Mine took to it quite well and is currently playing obsessively. It's good to know someone who plays personally so your pawn gets a lot of use.

Oh man, the main theme is catchy as hell
Hell yeah! I was taken aback when the guitar and lyrics kicked in, but it's awesome! The overworld themes are suitably epic and scream "fantasy", but having this as title music is refreshing!

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with my questions above?
Also, I seem to be getting ambushed a lot. My main pawn and I can handle a group of bandits, but usually there's one guy who bumrushes in and can take one of us down in a couple of hits... I don't have time to heal, and it seems pointless trying to fight (I'm a Strider so I can't block/evade) so I just leg it on to my objective or the nearest town.

Is this normal? It definitely brings a nice sense of "GTFO" and keeps me in my place early in the game, making the whole progression seem more of an adventure, but sometimes you just want to clear an area of guys, you know?

I kind of wanted to go through the first time with just my main pawn, but maybe I should think about hiring one or two - at least when out in the wilderness. What's the consensus here?

The only thing you lose is progress since your last save. No way to remove the letterbox.

Playing with just 1 pawn or without any pawns is absolutely possible. I've done both a couple of times already. Playing as a fighter is a little easier because you can block. But strider is still viable as long as you try to separate the enemies by sniping them followed running away a bit. When your level is too low the ass kicking shield dude might be prohibitively hard though. If so, just run. There's no shame to it.

The key to these surviving runs is actually to do away with a mage trying to cast heal; it's slow and pointless. Use healing items, especially harvestable food. Moldy versions are always best, and there's always plenty lying everywhere. The ones you want to collect and keep are apples (shoot them off trees) and grandgrapes. The grapes are great by itself but both are god-tier curatives when moldy. Also, don't bother trying to heal your pawn, you reviving them for 50% health is the only healing "item" that it needs.

That's great advice, especially about the curatives. Thanks very much.

That ass kicking shield dude is the exact one I mean! He always clowns in and wrecks my shit. Glad there's no shame in running. One day... *shakes fist*

That's interesting - I'll try dropping my mage's healing spell and focus on buffs/attacking (maybe the "cure" spell just in case). Guess I just need to be more careful when pulling enemies or picking off stragglers. How do you play completely solo by the way?

The saving thing is fair enough - I've just become "spoiled" by Dark Souls and its constant saving, haha. Who'd have thought that game would provide a luxury? Anyway, I'll press on and save regularly. Thanks again =)

The best way is to start as a fighter, get to gran soren as quick as you can, swap to assassin for the augments that boost your stats when playing solo. Once you've got those perks playing solo isn't hard at all. I'm sure it's possible to play without those perks, fights just get a lot longer, and more boring.

Playing with 1 pawn is a little more balanced, and more interesting. You can do different setups to make it fun! Magic archer playing a support role with a warrior pawn is great fun, for example.

I'd recommend against having your pawn a mage in general. If you are just rolling with you and your pawn you really need more damage over a support class. If you want to keep them a magic user at least switch them to a sorcerer.

Cheers guys. I will switch my pawn to a sorc as soon as I get the chance. Was planning on going Strider>Assassin with my main guy anyway.

As for the Japanese lyrics, it's because I've got the system set to Japanese language... It happened with the original SFIV as well. Capcom games are cool like that!

Combustion (or whatever they call it the one with the flame wall) is a great quick spell too. I used that to take out groups with my sorcerer. Not sure how well the pawns will use it though.

Seems I messed up -.-

I just fought the 2 Wraiths on the great wall and
the red dragon appeared
, at the end of the quest I got a new quest
telling me to go speak to the dragon forged
.

However since I like exploring everything I went through a door that start another quest and cancelled the other one
(the one that tells you to face the dragon)
, did I miss anything important, and possibly other quests as well?

Also am I near the end? There seems to be still alot of Story related trophies missing.

You are maybe an hour or two from the end depending on how quickly you move, i guess. You only missed a small thing (i forget what
talking to the dragon forged actually does
), but the next thing he does is tell you to go to the
greatwall to face the dragon. I'm assuming that's the door you went through?

Yeah, I guess I'm not missing much then. He doesn't give you any items or stuff like that?

*edit*

OMG, I only just found out you can use Duel Daggers WITH a shield lol

Picked this up @ BB today on impulse ($40 this week). Judging by comments I should start out with a fighter?

Start whatever you like to play as, fighter is probably the most balanced/easiest job to start with imo, it's great if you like shield classes, then you could switch to mystic knight if you want uber magic shield skills, but if you want range and other abilities, you'll want to pick the other vocations.

I can't comment on magic classes, I'm not really that into them :(

I started out as strider and played with it pretty much through out the entire game. Only very near the end I switched to assassin.

I really can't play this game without the double jump.

I've never found shield blocking to be that useful, but Sinew is a wonderful skill. You also get the most HP and defense so it'll make your life easier when you're still learning how to play.

Best tip is to just get Blink Strike.

shield blocking is the shit, it blocks almost everything including magic and range, mystic knight block is hilarious since you could counter most of the attacks, and you could absorb damage with demonswrath, it's fun!

Just finished, what a disapointing ending.

Boss was tedious and way too easy.

I mean, they put those balistas there and the boss doesn't event attack them, I even stopped using them because... what's the point? Might as well be fighting a wall
.

Even after that it was still too easy.

I still have alot of Story related trophies missing though but I'm not sure why, gonna have to read the wiki I guess.
