Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Alright, last question I'll ask: are there boss battles?

Yes. The boss battles are fantastic. Some of the best ever!

neither

PS3 = shitty framerate 30 percent of the time

360 = eye slashing tearing 40-60 percent of the time

The 360 version is definitely the safer choice.

The framerate on the PS3 version at times is downright unforgivable. It’s really, really bad. The PS3 version also has a little more trouble loading things in the distance, it’s under more stress....

Now the 360 version isn’t perfect, but you do get used to the screen-tearing, and if you don’t simply make the game run in 720p. If you do you’ll get a screen-tear probably once every 3 hours.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Cool, thanks for the input, guys. I think I'll pick up the 360 version, just because it really does seem like the PS3's frame rate is atrocious. That, and the visuals seem to be slightly cleaner on the 360... though apparently the PS3 version has LPCM sound, which would be nice, but... that frame rate *shudders*

Install the 360 version to your HDD if you can - it helps out quite a bit. Also, I didn't notice that much screen tearing in either version (played the 360 version at 1080p/HDMI).

So, is it perfectly normal to decide on a pawn or two, and main them through the whole game?

I'm thinking of starting to give my internet-pawns equipment now, just because I think I'll be using them for a good chunk of the game.

this is a good stratégy but :

-the equipmenet you give to a pawn is considered a gift and can't be recovered( if your pawn dies and you're forced to recruit hime again , then it's lost.

-if you do that you won't be able to see all the variety the game has to offer
-rented pawns gain monster experience , but don't get levels ..Unless you're playing with maxed pawns there will come a moment where you'll want to change

I just killed the Ur Dragon offline and none of my weapons got Dragon Forged. Does that only happen on the online Ur Dragon or was I extremely unlucky?

I've been playing this on the weekends since it came out, and I just finally beat it. This is far more than just GOTY, this is one of the all time greats. I'm going right into NG+.

Just finished the post-game this weekend after having had this sit in my backlog for a while, and I'm already into a second (new) playthrough with a different vocation. Used an assassin with a sorcerer pawn the first time, now I'm going to try Mystic Knight with either a Strider or Warrior pawn.

Thought it was great and an addictive experience, though obviously there are some flaws and annoyances - the biggest being the tedium of travel on foot for backtracking to locations, combined with running speed and stamina limitations. If they could have handed out more Portcrystals in the regular game (like an additional 3 or so) it wouldn't have been quite such a chore to go back to places like Cassardis to check notice board updates or finish quests. Also, it seems like the game will occasionally skip story cutscenes if you do things out of sequence, so sometimes I felt like I'd missed a plot point or two.

Also, the love interest mechanics were just silly. I definitely used a guide to make sure I didn't end up paired off with someone random (favorite method for decreasing affections - picking them up and throwing them against the wall. After a few throws, Madeleine was a little snippy with me after being besotted beforehand). And the male love interests were a bit... lacking. I think it's great that Capcom was equal opportunity throughout and basically ignored gender restrictions, but the male NPCs could have been fleshed out a bit more - though that's true of most of the NPC's I think.

Other than that, combat was fun (haven't tried mage combat yet); I liked the vocation system but it's a little maddening and anxiety-inducing if you're a micro-manager and want to optimize your stats. Funnily enough, the "real" story and post-game ending had a lot of thematic similarities to Xenoblade on Wii - maybe the game scenario writers read the same philosophy books or something.

Yeah, I would say letting you buy port crystals would improve it, I get what they're going for, but the map is just badly designed for that, not to mention the whole having to talk to npcs for quests thing so you need to travel back and forth.

Love interests is just funny, so were the story/characters aspects of the game, I do like the fact they're there, it's a capcom game so the characters are just so silly and charming, but at the same time I don't know if they add anything to the game and it would save them a lot of money if they cut out the "story' part.

Combat is definitely the best part of the game, it's probably the closest to a dmc-esque action game you could get set in an open world, it's not quite there yet but they've already done it better than the other action rpgs out in the market.

The ending portion is really where the story shines, I really liked it, the concept was great, but it's just not very well presented through out the game.

Can anyone help please:

Do you get less exp if you are in a 4 person party than a 3 person one?

Yea, you get more exp the less pawns you have, but don't worry about it, you level fast enough and you'll be over leveled at some point with a full party (if you've been doing most of the quests).

Wait, actual last question: Which version is better, 360 or PS3?

I got rid of my 360 copy because of the tearing. It was atrocious...my eyes couldn't take it. I fiddled with different resolutions, cable types, you name it.

I'll pick up the PS3 version when it's on sale. I'd much rather deal with slightly worse LoD and framerate.

Level 17. Main character's name is Alice, main pawn is named Ada.

PS3 version.

This fucking game. Holy shit.

DragonsDogmaScreenshot_20.jpg

A few hair color changes aside (at the barber's) I'm very satisfied with how my main character turned out. It took a few tries (and a few repeats of the intro sequence) to get it right, but it was worth it.

Some better clothing...

Adventuring with Rook and a pawn who'd later end up dying in a cave...

The Triumphant Execution of Rook...

Much later, after several changes in the party, deaths, and layoffs. And now a change of hair in the fields Gran Soren...

New gear...

Back to Cassardis for some unfinished business...

Into, and then out of, a mine after a brief bandit raid...

Creepy visual without a lantern...

And finally, as of tonight, it's Ada and I. Two rogues in search of a good healer...

Still learning the ins and outs of everything this world is offering.

Loving every minute.

This is my Game of the Year, no question.

That's actually quite a good looking female. Very rare thing to find in this game lol.

Mine (the pawn) turned out OKish, but not great. I can never take a good picture though, she always runs away. I really hate this game photo mode anyway... They don't do any increase in resolution as it's normal for Photo Modes and on top of that they save the freaking screenshots at 60% quality...

This was the best I managed:

my female pawn looks good. but yea, it's hard to take photos of pawns. you can catch them at the alehouse in gran soren if you try hard enough, near the board.

About nine hours in so far, really enjoying the game. Color me surprised when the solution to completing that first Everfall quest was just "fucking run". Was still fun though, I love turning on lanterns and wandering through a dark dungeon stabbing skeletons.

The platforming/climbing elements are also surprisingly fun. I bit janky, but I think that's why I like it. It's enjoyable to climb and jump up some structure thinking that I'm probably not supposed to go up there, only to find a random gold-stash. It's great to play a game with vague platforming elements where your every move isn't directed or scripted, they really encourage exploration - at least within the dungeons.

Thanks!

And you're telling me hahaha. I go to browse pawns and it looks like most people used the character editor for all of about ten seconds.

It's a deep tool, and you can really tweak a character to look good. Just takes work.

Anyway, I'm going to dump some more images in the days to come. I've been taking pictures of fuckin' everything. By the time I'm done with this character I'll have a whole visual chronicle of her adventures. :)

Also some brief comments:

-Platforming/jumping around is awesome. The Strider's "Sprint->Leap->Double Jump" means I'm clearing almost entire rooftops like a boss.
-being able to pick up random objects and hurdle them at unsuspecting NPCs is awesome.
-graphics are incredible for an open-world console game. Everything has detail to it.

and a brief grievance:

-my Pawn won't shut up. I try giving her shit at the knowledge chairs and tell her to be quiet, but alas...

And a question:

In the "Land of Opportunity" quest, I'm presently tracking down the guy's wife and kid. The wife agreed, but the kid took off running somewhere. Chased after him but he disappeared. Now the old fellow who gave me the quest is offering me the land for 80,000.

Is it a good deal? Like will I own the land and be able to use it/sleep/do shit?

Or is it better to try and track the kid down and make them vacate?

Please no spoilers! :)

-was going to use the wiki but for some reason I like not spoiling this game.

You won't be able to do anything with it, you just let the family keep living it. They give some items as reward but nothing special.

I was doing some lame escort quest for Selena.

So I walked carefully at night, and after killing a tons of direwolf I have to call it quit.

Came back later that night, and every wolf respawn and attacked me. There are probably at least 10 of them..... I guess stuff respawn after you quit the game.

Good to know. Thanks!

If there is an option I haven't seen it yet. Most of the time I end up just turning off voice volume and keeping subtitles.

in the knowledge chair , you can talk to your pawn and tell him if you want him/her to express himself or reserve it for the situation that need them (important events only )

Oh yes, I've taken Ada to "the chair" and given her a shit-talking more than once already. :p

She never seems to learn her lesson. :(

I think making a decent looking female character isn't anywhere as hard as trying to take a decent photo of her. Here's Iveta, my first pawn. I can't even remember what my later characters look like anymore though, have to check when I get home.

What level is recommended for the final part of the game? Right now I'm a level 50 MA. And do the unfinished quest I have disappear if I beat the final boss?

because important advices will still be told..

i believe this is enough to not listen to " the duke stand to commission some new roads" or " what a large tree", " a waycastle perhaps ? " everytime you travel...

lol ya she still says those lines a lot. Maybe she'll quiet down later.

More "adventures of..." pics coming tomorrow!

Does shop inventory in Gran Soren improve as I increase in level? I'm at 22 now and the shopkeepers are still stocking the same stuff. :/

They'll change inventories as you go through the main storyline. A certain quest involving an item called the
Gold Idol
will unlock their best loot, though.

Would it be too late to switch vocation at lv 25?

My pawn has been a fighter ever since, but I am thinking to make him a mage - but then his first 25 level is a fighter so all the stat growth doesn't seems to match.

I switched to mage at lvl 70, as long as you have decent equipment you'll be fine.

So I'm just starting out in this game, what do I do if I'm at Windbluff Tower north of Gran Soren at night time? I got into a big fight with a cyclops type monster and night fell so I barely made it here. There's no way I'll make the trip to Gran Soren at night time without resting. But I don't think there's any way to do that here.. do I just wait?

Windbluff Tower is super close to grand soren. Just keep sprinting while following the road and ull be fine. Just go in though the north entrance
