Dragon's Dogma |OT| For the night is dark and full of terrors

Hmm, I'd say it dropped to about a 5-10 FPS crawl. It popped right back up once I spun the camera so all the spell effects weren't on screen at once. Admittedly that is not ideal in a battle situation, but really hasn't caused me much issue.
The framerate only dropped that low on me a couple of times, though. So I'd say it's worst case.
But yeah, if you prefer the better framerate, 360 would be the best option. Unless you have more friends on the PS3 whose pawns you'd like to use, then it really isn't that bad.

I wonder if/when there will be a side by side comparison of the retail version.

5-10!?

Fuck my life, what the hell developers

I guess I'll just... not use magic >_<

Ya this is pretty much what I got playing them side by side for a couple hours. It is too bad too because enemies were causing it to drop when I was all fighters. 2 magic users and it was dropping pretty dramatically. It is just frankly very unoptomized.

KoA as in kingdom of amalur? I would never have guessed that @_o

I liked the combat in KoA, DD is better imho though. More options and just wading into a crowd is not going to get it. The first few fights though when squared off on a mob I found myself hitting O to roll away. Needless to say that didn't work.

Haha, I wouldn't go without magic, seriously. That was with two mages casting spells, and several enemies on screen. Was also in some knee deep water, so maybe the water effects contributed to the drop as well. You definitely do not need two mages, though, so it should be pretty fine for the most part. I think the most frequent drop I have encountered is down to maybe 20-25 FPS. Just enough to notice it stuttering.

Maybe there's some videos of PS3 gameplay with some mages to show the worst case. I'll have a look.

I've had my most epic adventure yet.

Just an example of how a simple escort quest can evolve into something grand.

That was me except with
Adaro
. That was not a short journey sir. What is up with some of these NPCs wanting to go to these dangerous unknown places. My current escort quest has me leading
Benita that priest in Cassandria to a place called the Bloodwater Beach or some such dangerous sounding place.

Honestly I almost never use magic in my primary character in any game. Is magic so important in Dogma that you consider it a necessity?

I am having a real tough time finding out which quest is even remotely possible on Level 19 because I keep getting my ass handed to me by bandits if I need to reach a certain area for the quest. Lizards? I can handle them. Trolls? Fine. Ogres? Bring em on. But bandits? There are rangers that take half of my health away with 1 arrow.

Definitely. Hiring a mage pawn is perfectly fine, though. It's all I do. They make your life a lot easier with their element buffs, and I believe magic is the only thing that can kill certain enemies.

but a magical pawn can serve the same purpose at least?

What are you viewing as 'trolls'? Ogres are the brown grey ape-like beasts. What/where are trolls?

Only level 17 strider, I have a tank as my pawn and enlist two magic types. I haven't seen the dramatic drops in fps mentioned above and don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having magic. Will stay either pure strider or ranger. Magic for second play though.

Yeah, I just head into the rift and hire a magic based pawn with spells I'll find useful in the upcoming area.
There's also items that have elemental effects, though I haven't used any of them yet. So a mage pawn may not actually be an absolute necessity. They are a great help, though.
Of course there are some areas where a mage doesn't really add much to the party, so it's all about picking the right pawns/classes for the adventuring session you're heading out on.
I personally just have a mage with me at all times.

It is not a 100% have to do thing but it can help for some players. And the drops can occur when enemies use spells in groups as well. It is sadly the effect of the GFX engine effect itself not just having your own. Maybe thats why you have users reporting 5-10 FPS and then 20FPS, nevertheless its something you notice at times. On the plus side, no tearing no matter what!

5-10 fps?? ... really?

I've had it chug for maybe one or two seconds when I sometimes load into Grand Soren right into the market place but never that slow while out adventuring ... Lowest i would say i've ever seen .. with spells going up... cyclops burning and flinging arrows all over the place is maybe 20.

so strange.

yeah. I played through the first 15 hours as a strider/assassin with mage backup. works just fine since mages can enchant weapons automatically.

not having ANY mages in your party is suicide though.

IMO, having a balanced party is for the best. Here's my set-up:

Arisen: Magick Archer, strike from a distance or deadly up front 1v1
Main Pawn: Sorcerer
Pawn #3: Fighter
Pawn #4: Mage, for healing, buffs and debuffs

A while back some of us were discussing another game, it slips my mind, that PS3 owners were reporting really huge variances on their FPS when it came to what PS3 they had. For the life of me I can't remember the game but it wouldn't surprise me that in a game that is unoptomized AND pushes a system that small variances could become larger. The console companies have checks in place for this not to happen. But in various threads here 360 and PS3, it sure seems like that is not the case in all games.

Alright, since nobody said anything when I asked about the "Coiffure you can't refuse" DLC, I'm buying it tonight. I'll try to post a pic of the Captain's Armor that comes with it.

There is a troll in a cave that involves a quest close to Gran Soren. You will see it once you go inside. There is a quest NPC infront of it.

That's awesome. not sure WHY reports were that the enemy list was short in this game. I feel it's pretty nice. Oh! One time I came upon a group of mages at night, that served that one cult in the Catacombs. They obliterated me. Then next time in that area, I couldn't find them. Pretty cool.

Drakes - anybody kill one yet? Wtf level is needed to kill them and their 10 purple health bars?

And the stats too. Thanks!

Btw, I've read you've got to be in the levels 40-50 to have a chance at killing Drakes.

How do you restore missing max health of pawns? It seems like you can't use items on them, so aside from staying at an inn, I'm not sure.

so where do we find THIS guy?

Holy shit, who said this game was easy? I'm just at the beginning, that
dungeon under the Capital with the blue light, red snakes and stuff
and I'm having my ass kicked so hard. Had to leave a pawn behind too :/

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
What do I do for the Troublesome Tomb quest? I'm at a female bandit fort(and I went through HELL getting here), but there's nothing here. I found some well hidden chests and got an awesome bow, but the quest marker is gone.

you went to the wrong camp. the tome is at the all male bandit fort near the witchwood

So last night i was doing some digging because the exact same glitch happened to me as well (map marker was on the female bandit camp - killed everyone there, found the high up chest and got no book). I got the correct info and went and got the tome but it seems to me that this is definitely a completely bugged quest. I gotta ask .. has any gaffer done the Troublesome Tome quest and had the map marker go to the correct bandit camp?

Also - for those interest in the Berserk armor/weapons I found a handy guide on how to get to them. Not sure if gfaqs is banned here or not? Pm me if you like the link i suppose...

Anyone else gets annihilated by the bandits in the woods near the mountain side? There is also a chimera closeby but those bandits can kill me with 1 arrow hit. Is that the place to recover the tome?

Is there's a way to set up camp outside? It's so annoying to always have to go back to town. I had some ferrystones before but they are fairly rare.

The game is fun but quite rough around the edges. It's nice that there's a lot of stuff to discover. The crafting system does offer many items to create. Just found out how to make skeleton keys.

Level 24 so far.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
So what's the verdict on the 360 version here GAF? Is the demo a pretty good indicator of the rest of the game or do they not really give you much to do in the demo?

I loved Dark Souls, and this game seems like a mix of that and Monster Hunter which seems like a great combo. I'm still on the fence.

That guy found me. Well, I'm not sure if it was exactly that kind, but some Drake suddenly appeared out of nowhere and made me run for my life.
Another time I saw one just walking around the field pretty far away from me.

The tome is in the camp at the southern edge of the map in a ruined castle on the coast. The chest with the tome is at the top of the castle's tower.

I chose correctly the first time, but it was all luck.

when you take the quest, you have the option of heading to map markers either in the north, or backtrack to one further south. head to the northern one, and the southern marker will disappear, and point you to the (incorrect) female bandit camp.

the same thing happens if you head south..you'll get a tip pointing you south and the northern markers vanish. Is it a bug? or the devs just giving you one shot at the location?

Most likely it will be the wrong camp. This quest is almost universally bugged. The actual camp is west of the The Encampment on your map ... just follow the trail with a cave entrance right next to it and you can't miss the camp itself. It's a rather large fort.
But - if those female bandits are able to one shot you with an arrow you should probably level a little more before you try for it.

Edit: beaten

Well then i guess i completely missed that second marker. All I ever saw was the one up north. I purposefully stayed away from that quest for a while as it seemed too far away for me. I probably would have (incorrectly) assumed that the southern base was easier/safer and tried there first if I had seen that marker.

The game gives you a ton more to do. Its an indicator of some combat but very little of the true awesomeness. It is rare you see this many people in a thread liking a game. It has some technical issues but they dont come close to outweighing the awesome.

The ps3 version doesn't get down to 5-10 frames per second - that's crazytalk.

It gets framey the first 2 seconds I'm in the capital. That's it. I roll with 2 mage pawns and in fights against 6-8 mobs, some of them mages also, the framerate barely dips at all. Definitely not down to 5-10 fps.

It went to the correct camp for me the first time, not sure why.
