Having trees overhanging on the roadways gives a great sense of movement. The closer something is, the more dramatic your sense of moving through it is. It's a smart optical consideration. What games have you run into recently that have a poor sense of speed? Most racers from the last several years have been solid, especially in that regard. Arcade titles like Blur, Horizon and Split/Second especially.

Ooh, outside of the racing-class cars on something like Nurburgring, I totally know what you mean. At least the nighttime tracks (like Special Stage Route 11) used lighting to try to give more of a sense of "zoom."
