DRIVECLUB: 30 minutes of new Beta footage

Not sure how I feel about the fame points multiplier. Do we know what that does? Just unlock stuff via the career mode quicker, or does it get you more points if you're competing against someone online?

No idea. My guess is they are single player multipliers. Doesn't seem fair to do it online.

I don't think he actually thinks those things himself, I think he's just putting them forward as reasons why some reviewers will dock points from Driveclub ... and I have to agree with him (unfortunately). For me -- from what I've seen so far -- Driveclub is easily a 9/10 but I can't help but be worried about the way the media works.

Correct. I don't believe most of that myself; it's what I expect will be said to justify giving
DC a middling score.

Folks at IGN already have me worried, what with the PS Beyond crew shitting on the game
at every chance and McCaffrey convincing himself that FM5 looks better.

Have you got a link to that, please?

Acquiescence posted it on the last page. It's on the latest Beyond podcast at the 46:30 mark.

Last time I listened to their podcast sometime ago, DC came up and the reaction was
similar lol.

Holy shit, Greg and Colin (rather obnoxiously) tear this game a new asshole in the latest Beyond podcast. Someone writes in essentially asking "Do you think DriveClub could be the first killer-app for the PS4," and Greg just starts laughing hysterically while Colin states that it's being sent to die, the delay has had a negative effect and Sony shouldn't have funded another realistic racer when they've got Gran Turismo.

I don't agree at all. I think this game's fortunes are at their best right now.

Edit - If you want to hear it, it starts at about 46.30. And after re-listening, the question is more specifically "Do you think that DriveClub has the potential to be the PS4's first unmissable title?"

They ain't giving it a chance at all.

If that is what general media feels.. it is Sony/Yoshida's fault for not creating the hype. Look at the Hype machine from Activision with "500M quote" and Ubisoft did with Watch Dogs. Sony treats Drive club like a red headed step child.. they advertise Destiny !!!. Sony folks talked more about games like No Man Sky than Drive club. That shows the internal confidence of Sony as a publisher.

This game is going to bomb badly. They botched the PS+ free edition, launch delay and every thing with this game has been a disaster so far.

The biggest blunder is not supporting PS3 racing wheel. Just that could have brought a huge contingency of PS3/GT fans.

I agree. What did PGR4 get on Metacritic, for example? Just checked, 85, with one stupidly low score at 50 for no real reason at all.

Maybe we can be confident DC will review well? But maybe the gaming media has changed in the last 7 years, at least in regards to how it/they view console racers. I'm guessing it'll get docked points because it's not "open world", which is like docking points for a game in 1992 because it's not a platformer.

I dont see why reviewers would dock the game for being a track racer. It literally makes no sense that they would do that... I mean, games like Driveclub have existed for a long time, and so have games like Forza Horizon.

I mean, we dont have games like Uncharted docked for being linear (as if being linear itself was a fault).

I am sure the game will be reviewed on its own merits, but hearing that IGN has openly been antagonistic sounds really annoying.

They are going to be compared because they are competing platform exclusives
being released way too close to one another. DC would have benefited from an
earlier release date coupled with having actual weather at launch. Sony/Evo
have done an extremely poor job handling facilitating the media coverage of DC.

The wheel oversight, coupled with releasing short compressed footage via fucking
facebook and instagram the past few months has culminated in the lack of hype for this
game. Again, very poor job all around by Sony/Evo.

This is true, and why the game won't become Sony's Forza. Nobody outside of the racing game community and GAF really care about DC. That doesn't mean it won't be great but it's not going to set any sales records.

That's a good point, I hope it's true. Evolution deserves success, they're a great team.

yeah, i can just imagine.

Sony have made mistakes with the game yes but if good it should have no problem selling at least i EU.
Also the PS+ version should help with that
I should also note that IGN (sometimes the usa media ) really don't give a fuck about racing games.
I remember before launch when people were talking about Sony big IPs and hardly anyone talk about GT from IGN .

I think word of mouth from the PS+ edition is going to drive (heh) most of the sales for this game. The majority of PS4 owners have PS+ so it's likely most of them are going to at least try it out. Of course whether or not they feel the need to purchase it once they have that is another story, but at least it'll get people talking.

Not even their own Playstation blog, Playstation Access(UK) covers Driveclub well. Sony has 20 videos for Destiny on youtube channels. !!!

For those who have played it, is there any variation to the tracks?

i.e. anything like the corkscrew at laguna or the angled carousel at the nurburgring

so I guess there is still a chance you can take mini shortcuts.....there is a part in the right side of this screen shot here where you can drive through I think... but you would have to be real quick or your 3 seconds would be up and you'd reset.

for those wondering, I've seen in other footage of the game, that in time trials mode..there is no 3 sec reset..you can drive off the road...for how far I don't know..but thank god for that... that 3 sec thing sure seems annoying sometimes.

Evolution's DriveClub will not be brought to you by IGN, and will not have a suspiciously high rating on MetaCritic.

Evolution will not give your mouth sex appeal.
Evolution will not have an Oscar worthy script.
Evolution will not make you look five pounds thinner, because the corridors will not be wide, Brother.

You will not have to worry about adjusting your tyre pressure, passing a license test, or the number of credits you require to purchase a Mazda 3.
Evolution will not go better with Mountain Dew.
Evolution will not fight the germs that may cause bad breath.

You will not be able to drive off road, brother.

Evolution will put you in the driver's seat.

Evolution will let you drive.

So, since it looks like the next PS+ refresh is October 7th and 8th (in North America and Europe respectively) which happen to be the same dates for the retail release of Driveclub, I wonder if the PS+ version of Driveclub will be made available then as part of the PS+ October refresh.

PS+ Edition will be avaliable, but it won't count towards the two monthy PS4 offers. It's going to be 2 PS4 games + Driveclub PS+ Edition, 2 PS3 games, 2 Vita games.

Kinda emblematic of why I stopped listening.

Edit: And the lack of clements and goldfarb. Altano is a good replacement but he isn't ever on.

It's no joke son. See, Forza is MS' Gran Turismo, so if DC becomes Sony's Forza it would also become Sony's MS' Gran Turismo. The universe would fold back in on itself taking us all into a new warped reality of interdimensionality.

Pretty darn good sir.

Edit- I really value IGN editors' and other sites opinions of those who don't care for racing games. I'd never want, you know, a fan of the genre, to let me know how the latest offering stacks up. On a related note, I'm offering my services to online sites to review JRPGs. Can't stand them, don't play them, should fit right in.

And to reiterate what others have said too, just another average racer on the ps4. Ok, what other arcade, simcade, or sim racing games are even out for us to pass on this to get instead?
NFS Rivals and MotoGP, that's it. Why is this game even being made with GT already existing? Well, it fits that middle ground sim/arcade intended to be pick up and play fun pretty damn well, but ok, we'll wait for 2-3 years for GT.

Even from last gen, there really aren't that many racing games out period, the more the merrier in the genre.

Bring on DC and FH2 and pCARS. All have a place in racing fan's hearts.

But what if MS comes out with another racing series that's their own version of Sony's MS Gran Turismo which would make it MS' Sony's MS Gran Turismo and - ow my head

Reviewers man. Its either too different or not different enough. I don't think it should be deducted points, because of it being linear though. Or even remotely hinted.

Because reviewers are clueless. If a game doesn't meet their expectations rather than being judged on it's own merits, instafail.

The only review of this I will trust is by the dude at Eurogamer who likes racing games (and did a retrospective on PGR4 fairly recently).

I pre-ordered! So I guess there must be some hype, as I wasn't into this game at all upon the initial reveal. But graphics-gate hit me hard.

That is what GAF does to people. If only GAF is as popular as new.google.com and masses read the forum. Bayo, Wonderful 101, Driveclub will all be billion $ franchises :)

I don't necessarily believe it should be docked for being a track racer, but I guarantee
you that it will be chastised for being a traditional racer when FH2 is being released
so close to DC. Seriously, they should have had this game ready for a summer
launch so that it wouldn't have to be overshadowed the way it is right now.

I personally will probably sink many hours into DC, but from Day 1, Sony and Evo
have done little to boost the game's prospects.

Pff if reviewers doxk point for not bein open world I can ignore those reviewers in the future.
