Landmark deal sees ex-Sony team join Codies to form "UK racing powerhouse"

At the end of March, just two weeks after Microsoft shut down Lionhead, the UK development scene was struck another blow. Sony was closing the doors of Evolution Studios: the studio behind WRC, Motorstorm and DriveClub. Fifteen years of top calibre racing pedigree was to disperse, and although Sony expressed regret that many of the talented staff from the Liverpool outfit wouldn't be taking up its offer of relocation, there was nothing to be done.

Except, this time, there was. Today, Codemasters has stepped in with an unprecedented deal to keep the team together and working on new projects, bringing Evolution Studios as a whole into the fold and making it a part of the Codemasters family. Most of the staff, including co-founder Mick Hocking, will be joining Codemasters as a separate team, working together from the same offices to produce brand new IP for the British racing specialist. Previous IP remains in the hands of Sony, but Hocking and his team will, essentially, continue Evolution Studios' work under new ownership.

That's awesome news. :)

Wouldn't it be great if some EVO talent ends up working at Codemasters now? they definitively will benefit from some visual improvements in their engine.

Fuck me! yes! Congrats Rushy and the rest of the team, and welcome to PC! ;)

Fantastic news :) Can't wait to see what they've got planned next.

I wonder if they own the rights to the DC engine....

"So we've made a job offer to all employees and I'm happy to say that most of them have accepted and are joining us. We're only hiring employees, we are not taking any of the IP or the technology. It's purely the people we are after."

Congrats to the DRIVECLUB TEAM

I'll be following your progress for your next game .
Codemaster taking them in is like the best news i could have hoped given the circumstances.

Hopefully they'll make another arcade(ish) track racer at some point, although I'm not holding my breath for it, considering how their popularity has decreased.

Well... here's to those hoping to see something like "GRID MotorClub Evolution" that can compete with GT7 on PC. :D

Arcade racers like Dirt Showdown and Grid 2 were a failure, while Dirt Rally is a success on PC and I think it will be on consoles too, being the "Dark Souls" of car games and all that.

I think this is the time when simulators can break into mainstream. There is a huge base of people looking for more and more realistic and immersive experiences, not to mention the upcoming VR wave, which is perfect for racing games.

I don't think it's a "disaster" they don't have the rights to the DC's engine, it simply means that we'll probably going to have wait longer for their new game. I can wait. :)

Well spotted, I missed that - in which case I wonder if they still have their technical bods to write a new engine or if they'll use codies Ego engine or even unreal 4. It would probably make sense to let them loose on improving the Ego engine to do Driveclub's tech innovations.

This generation has seen me fall in love DriveClub and right now with Dirt Rally.

Couldn't be happier about this news.

I was sad to see Grid Autosport selling not so well. It came out for the PS3 and X360 in a time where the PS4 and the Xbox One were already in the market. That game was f*ckin awesome, and you guys should try it if you haven't already. Grab it for PC for the glorious 60 FPS (or more). Reminded me a lot of the old Toca Race Driver games.

EDIT: but it seems that Dirt Rally is doing great. I hope that they keep on this route in taking the motorsports aspects with more seriousness.

Well done to David Ricardo in winning the Zagato time trial, with Sirenty taking 2nd and Vix 3Rd - good to have another winner and a better turnout :)

Unfortunately, I'm not personally interested in simulators, and more realistic racers, like GT series. The more unrealistic the better, as far as I'm concerned. Apart from Driveclub and Trackmania Turbo, it's pretty slim pickings for fans of arcade (and combat) racing, and it doesn't look like that's going to change in the near future.

Son of a gun! I thought i still held the first place! Well, it was nice holding the top spot on one of these challenges, even for a short time. To be fair, i could tell that you guys hadn't put everything into it yet. :)

Edit:

Wait a minute, Goldrusher is still #7! :)

Yeah my mistake, not sure why I thought he had the lead! I've no doubt I won't be staying top till the end, but will pop back from time to time to see how it's going.

Finally took the time to play this again on the easy difficulty. And I can't say I noticing much difference, still to hard to be fun imo. Oh well, time to remove it from my installed games once and for all.

I don't know, as a non-racing buff i found putting in the time to learn the tracks and cars and gradually getting better very fun and satisfying. I started out as a total scrub who couldn't keep any car above sports class on the road and now i've earned all the stars in the game, beat all the elite challenges, and i wouldn't even call myself more than decent. I honestly think the game isn't that hard, you just need to develop a feel for it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Won't get to improve my score in the challenge this weekend as away at Donington Park for the BTCC, btw if anyone is local to there and would like 2 free tickets for the full weekend, I've a couple spare (Won 4 weekend tickets)

You should upload a race - you cant be that bad, unless you arent really putting any effort in just learning tracks and choosing the right cars

I just can't understand how can he be so fast on the Kyle inverted at the first turn with the one:1.

Man I would have love to unfortunately I have an event on Sunday which is when I would have had the chance to go - hope you have fun! Still like catching the odd race on ITV4 - I remember the days of Cleland and co and their fisticuffs :p

But again thanks for the generous offer

Very well done to #1 Defender on taking his first win on the weekly challenges - I saw Sirenty was on there late on trying to take the top spot but had to settle for second with Bouniter taking 3rd, Abandoned Trolley 4th and the return of Ainsz in 5th.

Overall this means Sirenty has extended his lead over Bouniter to 8500 points with DavidRicardo dropping back to 12750 behind. #1 Defender has shot up to 4th with his win and AnythingBut is hanging in there in his usual 5th place and still without a win....

I'll get the new challenge on tonight, the cars are looking a lot more active than the bikes - usually I'd be switching back to bikes now but do you want to stick with cars again for this challenge?

Yeah I was keeping an eye on the scores and was 2nd for a while then checked this morning and realised I ended 4th. Had a great weekend at Donington though regardless of the bizarre weather on the Saturday!

Thank you! I know i profited immensely from low participation in this season of challenges (and a good deal of luck on the winning attempt). I was actually hoping i had it in the bag when AbandonedTrolley announced that he wasn't going to be able to play during the weekend, but as it turned out, Sirenty and Bouniter weren't just going to let me have a free pass. Fun tidbit, before i set the winning score, i came within 2 points of Sirenty's score. And when i finally managed to take the top spot, i noticed that Sirenty started to improve his score, so i was sweating bullets until the very end of the challenge, all the while unsuccessfully trying to beat my own score to gain a safety cushion.

If i never get close to the podium again, i'm still going to feel very happy and proud having won one of these against such quality (if low in quantity) competition. It's been a privilege! :)

P.S.: I see Trolley didn't exactly miss out by skipping the final two days of the challenge. :)

I'm jealous to you Trolley. I'd love to see BTCC live. Watched everything on ITV again.

Shame about Subaru boxer's being awful on the straights. I want to see Plato up there again. Also i do not like Collard winning a race. His racecraft is awful.

I haven't watched BTCC in two years (been a fan since the 90s when I first played TOCA), but it looks like I'll have to start again. No tv station is doing a live coverage in my country so I have to rely on less legal sources. I remember that someone was uploading the races on youtube, but I guess they got taken down eventually.

Plato was always my favorite, but he seems to like joining underdog teams and losing title chances as a result of that. ;p

Congrats, you nailed a great run! I could not figure out how to be consistent in the last drift zone, and rarely got above 2K points. Couldn't make up the difference in the other corners, so I just hoped to hang on to 2nd.

He almost won last season.. sadly the factory Honda team took the win instead :(
Now that team moved from VW's to the new Subaru Levorg's.. the engine has like zero racing development yet on it so they have like tons of work to do on that car..

You can usually find a ITV4 stream on vipbox. Just look under tv channels instead of motorsports.

Thank you! Yes, that last corner was by far the most difficult and most inconsistent one for me as well. Even after a few dozen tries i would score around 1800 on it more often than not, which ruined otherwise great runs.

@DHC:

It's a bit of an in-joke by now that you get some shit occasionally for your track/weather/car combos, but i have to say i was really enjoying this one, and i don't say that because i won. It all just came together for a very fun experience, which was what kept me coming back to improve my score throughout the week. Otherwise i would have just set a semi-decent score and been done with it. Thanks for being the driving force behind the challenges! :)

This is never going to get another update, is it? I'd like it if the stuff like courses that had clearly been worked off was finished by Sony, but it's not going to happen :(

So, uh, somehow I have a trophy for Driveclub Bikes, even though I don't own it?

I bought the No Limits DLC for to get the new Honda and GTR so I guess the trophy somehow linked across to bikes.

Weird because there isn't a no limits trophy list on the base game, but there is in bikes. But there isn't even a no limits season in bikes... I am very confused.

The base game reached the max number of trophies, so the latest DLC packs (both cars and bikes) are under Driveclub Bikes for trophies.

Yep it's a record that probably won't be beaten anytime soon. I'm surprised Sony allowed so many trophies in the first place, especially since some of them didn't really require any skill (like the ones for gaining the first star or unlocking the main event).

Indeed, we are not.
What is those awesome team at PlayStation doing?

@DHC-Shannow sorry dude I think I want to quit from weekly DC challenges for a while, until I got a mood to play DC again...sorry mate.

No probs bud - the bike challenge is looking a bit dead at the mo (only 5 entries) so I think we're going to have to stick to cars in future...
