Drudge Report: Christopher Reeve is dead

In reality, he has been doing quite badly for several months now. I was listening to an interview with him on the BBC a couple weeks ago where he was talking about several complications related to some of the experimental treatments he underwent. One infection nearly took his life and he beat the odds not dying from it immediately. The disease, from what I gather, weakened him too much for him to take another hit.

Also, because of several things that occured in his treatments, the reality of him walking again was looking less and less likely. He had shattered his hip and a few bones in his legs that had become brittle and weak from disuse. He admitted, himself, that the chances of him walking were even slimmer than when he started out. BUT, the lessons learned from the mistakes made with him have already had practical and immediate applications in patients across the world. The first year of paralysis for a para or quadriplegic are already drastically different thanks to the efforts of scientists and the willingness of Reeves to be a guinea pig. He may have been a colossal asshole, but in the end, part of his sacrifices have already made a difference in peoples' lives.

Sad news. Guy's life has helped out others with spinal cord injuries. Hopefully one day the work he started will let others walk again. Rest in Peace Christopher.

R.I.P., Christopher Reeve. :( Not only was he a great actor, but also very important in the fight to truly make stem cell research a reality. He has reached out to help a lot of people.

I can't believe people are making jokes about someone's death in this thread. Totally uncalled for, especially this early.

Assuming you don't agree with the disabled cited in the article above, what has he done that made him a "colossal asshole?" Not trolling, just wondering.

Also, in regards to that article, it's total bull. I can see why some disabled might take issue with the attention and all that, but on the other, I think it's harder for a person that hasn't been disabled to cope with such things. The disabled by birth have had to deal with it from day one yes, but they've had to deal with it from day one. You adapt and can cope with something you've never had far easier than someone that has lost. The disabled from birth lost the abilities yes, but they never really knew the loss of them.

I'll never forget a few years ago, my cousin had her birthday party at an ice skating rink, and in the other part of the building there was a hockey team practicing. Of course I wouldn't have thought much of it, but Christopher Reeve was there. I just saw him and it was really awe-inspiring to see him living his life and watching his son practice.

R.I.P.

I'm saddened to hear about his death. I also grew up watching the Superman movies and enjoyed them a lot. RIP Christopher.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
The next issue of each Superman book BETTER have a quick byline either at the front or back for Reeve dammit.

Sorry, but that Maddox Photoshop had be rofl. :lol That's so wrong, but so funny.

Anyway, I think seeing Superman on a respirator pretty much got me over this years ago. Superman can't even walk? WTF? So his death was just a matter of time, unfortunately, I just hope the rest of his money and estate goes towards continuing the stem cell drive. Reeve only hopped on the bandwagon when he got injured. It's something I still don't like to this day. People are allowed to change, but IMO, you shouldn't have to wait until that tragedy befalls you to start giving a crap. Once he was on board though, he's done a lot, but there are many para- and quadraplegics out there who still need that help, so that can't be lost in all of this. RIP Chris Reeves, although I don't know about that "great actor" stuff. He was the best Superman ever though. PEACE.

I've been wanting to buy the Superman DVD boxset ever since it came out... Who wants to bet that there will be a nice surge in sales because of this? Hope they aren't out of print.

I don't know anyone who actively participates in these sorts of benefits until they or close family/friends have been affected by it. That doesn't mean there aren't people doing it solely for the good of humankind, but I don't think it's absurd to say that a majority of the people involved with the stem cell movement all have ties to someone who could benefit from it. Mr. Reeve was no more selfish than anyone else.

R.I.P. Superman.

I too was looking forward to his work on Smallville. I wanted to see a scene with Annette O'Toole, Margot Kidder, and Christopher Reeve all at the same time...

I too bought the Superman box set the first second it came out (well, my bro did) and I think he's one of the best actors ever.

Not only is he the best Superman, he is the best Clark Kent.

As I was walking to lunch today the UNC belltower played the theme from Superman, which was a nice way to remember Reeves. Rest in peace.

That's really cool man. I've been humming the tune between classes today. This reminds me of the day he got paralyzed. I thought my whole world was coming to an end. Seriously, years from now, should a similar tragedy befall someone like Tobey Maguire, it'll be the same thing. You can't play a superhero and get put on the shelf like that. Reeve will forever be associated with flying through the air and reversing time and stuff. He wasn't just a superhero, he was arguably the most famous and powerful one of them all. That really sucks. PEACE.

Why is it so hard for GAF to have obituary threads without the tasteless jokes? Is it really so fucking difficult?

RIP.

"Real artists are jaded aesthetes, made cynical before their time by unrelenting debauchery and single-minded pursuit of their artistic vision. In such a scene, irony is the coin of the realm. And besides - what other social device lets you appear intellectually superior and world-weary, without having the slightest fucking clue about what you’re talking about? Consider irony a short-cut to character, without all the invariably unpleasant work entailed in building it. In Toronto, irony is an even easier and more convenient mode of expression, due to a huge surplus of sour hipsters who use it to construct a form of passive aggressive double-speak – sort of like a bastardized Gypsy’s cant for the High Fidelity set."

I'm quite sad about this. Superman was my favorite superhero as child because of Reeves and his movies. My parents said that I even taught myself how to run the VCR so I could play Superman the Movie whenever I wanted. I may not have known the man, but I feel the lost just the same because I felt like I could do anything when watching him wear the cape. Though I know better now, I still refuse to forget that feeling of being capable of anything. As a matter of fact, the strength he showed after his accident has inspired me even more. He became a real hero after the magic of his movies waned with time and the knowledge of how things are done in films.

There's so many disabilities and diseases, what do you pick to help if you are healthy person?

Both Jor-El and Kal-El died this year :(

Jor-El?

And I don't know why, but Reeve's death really hit me hard. I usually don't care for celeb deaths any more than I do when I see normal people who were murdered on the news. Maybe it was a piece of my childhood dying. Maybe it was the fact I subconsciously thought of him as Superman. Maybe it's that I thought what he was doing was truly noble by using his celebrity status to help others who were paralyzed, and that he never gave up on the dream of walking again. Maybe it's that he never will walk again. Maybe it's because it brings back memories of my grandpa fighting cancer and ultimately dying because of it. Perhaps it's a mix of all of those, or some of those. I don't know. Either way, Reeve's death is something that I have given more attention to than any other celebrity's death.

Just pick something you sincerely want to do something about. The reality is that people usually don't give a shit unless a tragedy happens to them. I usually don't give a shit about anything until I found out that there is a possibility that my pop my be having early symptoms of alzheimer's disease(he's okay though). Now I am very interested in finding ways to help find the cure for alzheimer's disease like donations.
