DUKE NUKEM FOREVER |OT| Spank One For The Good Guys

A solid 8/10 from me - 25 year old long-term gamer. The Ego raising mechanics - done by living the life of the Duke himself - in a great variety of interactive ways - is the clincher for me. Brilliant story-based device worked into the core engine. Very happy with the multiplayer as well, and even my partner watched me play the opening levels, and loved the story! ;)

I was worried about the critical reception, but having played it non-stop for 6 hours, I think it may just do pretty well on its own merit.

If only they had chosen to allow a player to carry more than two weapons (even three or four would set the Duke above other games), have the melee button give a kick attack, and put in a few secret-cracks (a la 3D), DN would have warranted a 9 from me. Still, a strong title overall.

Well worth the price, and another hit from Gearbox. Well done, guys.

In the context of the game though, more than 2 weapons would essentially break it. Melee attacks not being the boot is stupid though.

There are secrets in a sense, but they don't advertise them as such and some of they just have an item that increases your ego a little. Two I've found are
at the very start of duke burger, if u go the wrong way, theres an employee room where you can get a cigar for an ego boost. And After the long section of being mini duke, when the next level loads, instead of going on the pad to get big again, run past it and u can get into a bathroom with an rpg in it.

Based on what I've played I'd give it an 8 too.

If you didn't grow up with Duke and other Build games/FPS games in the 90s (Blood, Shadow Warrior, Rise of the Triad etc.), I do think you might have a hard time 'getting' the appeal of the Duke Nukem character and the kind of humour that those 90s FPS games had. You should give Duke Nukem 3D and Blood a try, as those are two of the best FPS games of all time, and if you enjoy them, you might end up enjoying DNF too.

Rise of the Triad was a heavily modified Wolf 3d engine game, not build.. It was originally a sequel to Wolf3d, then it got changed, which probably explains why you're fighting dudes with guns, and have pistols and machine guns for weapons.

I know it wasn't a Build game, hence the 'Build games/FPS games' ;) Still an ace game though.

As someone who is 18 years old and has never played a Duke Nukem game before, how do you think newcomers to the series would think of the game? Do you think they would understand the humour or just find it stupid (in a bad way)?

I'm curious to know what this game is like. I haven't been able to play the demo but have seen, various times, the footage from the demo. I don't think it interests me.

Just want to know your thoughts! Thanks.

After playing it for ~2 hours on my PC:

-graphics are about Quake IV-ish with some improvements (the alien disco ball was cool)
-game design is heavily influenced by halo and half life 2
-duke is awesome, although his jumping grunt is annoying (I'm a habitual jumper in games)
-2 weapon limit sucks, but it doesn't break the game
-the queen fight had a nice gimmick going on in it
-the mini games are awesome
-I don't get the load time complaints, my HDD is half dead and load times are maybe 10s max (haven't timed)
-performance wise it's hovering around 100 fps while not in combat and 50 fps in combat (i5 760, gtx 285, 4g ram)

Been pretty good so far

Probably talking about console load times. IIRC, the console demo had annoying load times as well.

Does it have more graphic options than the Demo did?

Even with max settings it looked like shit.

As far as I can see, same options. And it looks like shit because most of the assets are 3+ years old.

I've watched a couple streams and there are some very cool looking areas and effects in the game. Some parts of it may look like shit, but the game as a whole seems to look nice enough.

The game seems to have the same options from the demo, but at least you can disable blur via console.

PC Gamer gave it a pretty great review, while most reviews for the console version have been poor. Hmm..

The alien hive you go into after the casino looks pretty great. There's a couple of areas where you have to roll some ball shaped alien into a receptable and there's a light source inside it so you have this purple light streaming from the holes in its shell. Looks wicked.

It's a good game if you can look past the low quality assets. Gameplay so far has been solid.

Not trying to be an apologist as I haven't even played the game yet, but the guys at Joystiq have been pretty high on bad puns and general cynicism lately. Have you listened to their E3 podcasts? They basically hate and make fun of everything.

I understand you're bound to get pretty jaded when your entire life revolves around videogames, but I don't know, try to make an effort for your freakin audience.

Anyway, I'm derailing severely here. Can't wait to try it myself. The good thing is that my expectations are so low after all the bad reviews that I can only be pleasantly surprised now.

It's perhaps the greatest thing I've ever seen. I wasn't THAT interested in the game before, but it looks pretty awesome.

I know what pasties are. These little baked things filled with meat, of course!

Screw off Stitch, Bulletstorm was one of the best fps games in years.
Just shows how shitty shooters have become in the last few years.

Kotaku, Destructoid and Joystiq are in a 3 way war to outsnark one another. It gets really old.

I'm afraid I can't agree. Bulletstorm's stick was the funny script and the skillshots and skillshots got boring way before the script did.

I could seriously argue that all those cons are downright wrong.

The respawning enemies ala COD and broken AI are lies, the AI is fine and there is nothing like COD respawning at all.

Most of those cons are things I noticed in the demo though?

The respawning enemies ala COD and broken AI are simply untrue, the AI is fine and there is nothing like COD respawning at all. I can think of one instance after 5 hours where theres a pig cop that keeps respawning until u move out of the area, but it's 1 pig cop at a time and it's for the purposes of that section only. The rest of the game so far has not had respawning enemies AT ALL.

However you dress it up, Duke Nukem Forever is Doom with added political incorrectness
That would actually be a good thing in the midst of Call of Duty 8 or whatever.

Unfortunately, this doesn't really seem to share much with Doom in terms of level design. It's definitely a mish-mash of old and new school design decisions. You can definitely see evidence of things that George found awesome in other games and their attempts to implement them in Duke.

Yeah, the load times in the PS3 demo were pretty bad. The PC demo was fine OTOH.

And dammit, I'm sick and feel tired as fuck, and the woman my old man is dating is spending the weekend with her 9 year old daughter here. And her daughter sleeps in the room where I have my gaming desktop PC. So no Duke for me this weekend >_>

I didnt really worry about checking off skillshots on the list, and just tried to think of fun ways to blow enemies up. If it resulted in a skillshot = yay, if not, well it was fun anyway. Looked great, had powerful weapon sounds, and the weapons were fun to use/had great alt fires...which is something we are REALLY missing in today's shooters (except for anything Epic has to do with). Its like playing a fighting game: If you just focus on doing the same combos over and over, its boring. Fighting and doing new combos on the fly = fun.

implausible scenario

How is that a con?

Reading impressions, i'm shocked they are charging 60$ for this. Gameplay aside, the performance and technical aspects sound terrible - it shouldn't have been released in this state.

A lot of the complaints are things I actually like and want. I want to play a shooter that's stuck in the 90's and I love the overall attitude.
Yep, in fact the most disappointing aspects of the game, based on what I played in the demo, are the parts they tried to bring up to date (2 weapon limit, health regen.)
