Not to sound like an ass, but they made an episode of CSI based around this. Some dumbass was doing target practice and some lady yelled at him telling him to stop, so he just shot one up in the air, and it hit a another lady like 6 blocks away in the chest, killing her instantly.

But yeah, this is horrible.

Escape velocity is around 25,000 miles per hour. Bullets don't fly anywhere near that fast.

I don't know if it is illegal to fire certain weapons into the air like that, but it certainly isn't irresponsible to shoot some guns that way. Though it would be pretty dumb to shoot a rifle or pistol just up into the air. I'm not sure what NM has to do with it.

My mom's car got shot in such a manner a few years back. Even if it might be kinda rare to have the bullet land on someone's head, it could land in someone's windshield and cause a traffic accident or all kinds of stuff. You'd have to be a moron to think you can just indescriminantly start firing up in the air in a populated area.

Hehehehehe, of course not. What the hell were you thinking? Those aren't real bullets. It would be seriously a bad idea to fire a gun up into the air at a sporting event.

Some of you guys need to review projectile motion. Even if the bullet loses speed going up into the air because of air resistance, it regains some of it coming back down and still has enough to easily kill somebody.

Considering only the initial upward velocity and gravity, the bullet will come down just as fast as it was originally shot; however, air resistance acts on it for the entire trip so it doesn't get quite that bad. Still highly dangerous.
