DUNE - 2020 - Denis Villeneuve - Fear is the mind killer

SJWs complain Dune is whitewashing, the Anti-woke brigade is complaining about gender swapped minority casting.

This shit is beyond funny.

I'm just reading Children of Dune, super stoked about the upcoming movie! The stills look great, can't wait for this to get to cinemas. Blade Runner 2049 was awesome, Arrival was great as well, I have high hopes for this one.

As mentioned in a report that we published back on December 30th, 2019, we made mention that the December due movie has gender and race swapped Liet-Kynes to a black woman. And lo and behold, it has come to fruition via vanityfair.com:

“In an intriguing change to the source material, Villeneuve has also updated Dr. Liet Kynes, the leading ecologist on Arrakis and an independent power broker amid the various warring factions. Although always depicted as a white man, the character is now played by Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Rogue One), a black woman.
And here is Duncan-Brewster’s take on the change:

“What Denis had stated to me was there was a lack of female characters in his cast, and he had always been very feminist, pro-women, and wanted to write the role for a woman. This human being manages to basically keep the peace amongst many people. Women are very good at that, so why can’t Kynes be a woman? Why shouldn’t Kynes be a woman?”

Know what? I don't give a shit as long as the movie turns out alright. What happened to enjoying a movie for what it is, respectively the director intended? No, self - important snowflakes can't stand for that and get their knickers in a twist if there is any detail they don't like. Doesn't matter if it's sjws or the anti - woke - brigade, for me just two cheeks of the same butt.

Projection. Accuse other of what we ourselves are guilty of.

If you cared about just enjoying a thing for what it is, then youd be asking why sjws types keep gender/race swapping and messing with the source material.

If they cared that much about representation, they wouldnt take the things that they dont like the way they already are and bastardize them, instead, they would put their money where their mouths ares are create something from scratch with those demographics in mind from the point of inception.

Kynes is such a bit part, unless it was hugely expanded for this version I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill here.

I trust in Denis till he gives me a reason not to. Now if they'd gender swapped Paul or made Stilgar a trans or we got a militant lesbian Baron then I'd be pissed.

Id still be saying what im saying if in the source material the character was black and female and swapped her for a white male.

This is the real worry. Kynes was a set of notes in the books. Not an actual character of action in the books. I don't care that they did the gender swap. I worry they are going to force in story that didn't exist in order to score representation points. If Kynes is in the film, it should be like 20 seconds of screen time to set backstory at the intro and then nothing more. If anything, a flashback around the end of the first act.

Kynes' big scene in the book, and in Lynch's movie, was him taking Paul and the Duke on the Spice mining inspection when they take over Arrakis.
It's basically an exposition dump on how things work there, the mining, stillsuits, the worms, etc.
His next scene is basically the Baron sending him to his death. iirc he isn't really mentioned again, in Dune or in any of the sequels for that matter either.

His POV death is one of the things I remember best from the book though, and he also is the main character talking about the ecology of Arrakis, which I think is an interesting part of the world.

Well just bought the book off amazon to see what all the hubbub is about, might have to grab the audible version too so I can listen at work.

Kynes is a big deal in the lore. Not so so much in the book itself, as much of what he accomplished was done prior. However, Kynes is still important. I am not sure his actor is too important though for his role.

Ain't no way Zendaya is gonna be a better Chani than the mini series Chani though.

They should have went for a no name actress for the part imo.

Do these people know that Dune took Islamic words and concepts to incorporate into Dune? lol
Dune has always been woke. I mean, there's literal "Jihad" in the book. Muad'dib is also arabic.

Dune has always been woke.
I think that only the greatest of ignorants are oblivious to the whole Arrakis -> Spice -> Fremen = Middle East -> Oil -> Jihadists
And i'd rather say it's not woke, because Herbert was wary of political/religious leaders and what jihad would bring forth.

HYPE!

I've never seen the 80s movie, is it good?

It’s completely unique I really like it.

The Kynes casting is whatever they needed a box checked, gross but that’s the reality. What is worrying to me is Zendaya being cast as Chani she isn’t even a good actress. But Paul looks good and the director is good so I’m watching this in theatre!

The original cut is fascinating, but leaves something to be desired (it's a little over-edited so the pacing's really off).

I created my own a definitive extended cut of Dune '84 though and now it's as close to a masterpiece as it'll ever be. Could shoot a link thru PM if anyone's interested.

Director Denis Villeneuve has revealed the level of attention to detail and time spent on perfecting the look of the iconic sandworms of planet Arrakis in his upcoming screen retelling of Dune.

Villeneuve, who previously brought alien creatures to life in Arrival before tackling Blade Runner 2049, told Empire Magazine (via /Film) that he and his production team spent a year understanding how such a giant creature would operate in a desert environment in order to obtain the right look.

“We talked about every little detail that would make such a beast possible, from the texture of the skin, to the way the mouth opens, to the system to eat its food in the sand," Villeneuve said.

He added, "It was a year of work to design and to find the perfect shape that looked prehistoric enough.”

Ok, i'm gonna play the asshole now and bump this thread.

There were reports that the first trailer would drop on July 17th during a re-release of Inception in the cinema, US.
So did it happen? There are no leaks, no people are talking about it.
Literally WTF? When will we see some footage?

It's in post production right now, i think it's good that they are keeping a close lid on it.
I rather go see a movie blind to what's in it.

Roger Deakins had Villeneuve on in his podcast a month ago.
Couple of cool tidbit in there, like on how he influenced his thinking.

Hype is the Mindkiller.
Just wait and everything will be fine.

Disagree. I love all of the books, even the later ones written by Frank's kid. Even if they aren't on his level.

Which brings me to my concern, another Dune production that fails to tell the whole story. I really think it should be a series. Someday I am gonna see Chapterhouse on the screen.

What we really should’ve gotten originally

Mr Alejandro "i was raping Herbert" Jodorovsky?
Boy, that movie would be something to see on acid, bit i think tbis would be a bigger trainwreck than 1984 Dune.

It's 5 months till release and we haven't even seen a teaser. I am somewhat worried 🤷🏻‍♂️
And this is not a movie i will go blindly. It's an important book to me and i am ok with sacrifices in getting this to the big screen, but i ain't beleiving Hollywood when handling adaptations

This is pretty much only director that can make a justice to the book Dune so if this one fails we can say goodbye to any hope of decent Dune movies.
Also I wouldn't worry too much about lack of trailer yet - Covid most likely fucked up all their promotional plans.
