DUNE - 2020 - Denis Villeneuve - Fear is the mind killer

Gender swapping the role of Liet Kynes is dumb but I was actually shocked to find out that he was played by Max Von Sydow in the original movie. In my head he was always ethnic (as were all the Fremen, including Chani).

I remember people screeching when the Chani casting was announced. When it's perfect casting for both her and Paul.

People need to bleach the Lynch version from their mind.

just saw images. ugh. why does everything have to look so boring and realistic these days? what happened to the FANTASY in space fantasy?

i swear, many scenes in the last Star Wars looked like they shot it in the field next to a parking lot. so tired of this prestige tv look.

Kynes "went native" in the book iirc, but he was always the Imperial Planetologist. He was a minor player in the books, Max had maybe 10 minutes of total screentime in Lynch's version.

I loved Denis V.'s other sci-fi films. Arrival is spectacular, and Blade Runner was masterful at updating the source material faithfully.

... except for a few things, like that horrific Leto casting and all of his pointless scenes in the film. And I'm increasingly feeling like Dune, with its cast full of trendy celebs, is going to fall deeper into that hole of popular mediocrity, and bog down what could have been great.

Maybe it'll surprise me and reach the director's former highs, but so far these photos and casting choices are remarkably uninspired. I hate the look of everything shown in this thread. David Lynch's film at least had some ambitious art throughout, and felt original.

Anthony Breznican writes, “Think Greta Thunberg, only she’s a Jedi with a diploma from Hogwarts.”
🤮

We've just found the least appealing character description in the history of fiction.

Apparently, Twitter thinks middle easterners settled from the shitty region of earth (fuck the desert) to the shitty region of space (fuck the desert). Sounds racist to me.

Truth is, Dune is so far into the future many cultures have mixed together. Plus it was written by a white dude from Washington state who grew up with some Native Americans. Unsure how much personal lived experience Mr. Herbert had with middle easterners.

I'm usually not a big fan of gender swapping roles but it can work so I'll give this a chance because I really like Dune. Don't flame me but it worked decently in the "Overboard" 2018 version (I have poor taste in movies) and also I liked the "High Fidelity" remake on Hulu. No comment on race other than that it's nice to see some diversity but hopefully it's not just to pander to the audiences or get points. From my perspective it's always cool to see people who look like you in these fantasy movies. I'm black and growing up I can tell you I often noticed how it seemed like people that looked like me don't exist in a lot of fantasy worlds. It didn't make me enjoy the films any less, but you do notice it.

Whats up with people like these journos & non journos in their timeline, complaining about lack of colour now in Sci-Fi movies based on that one Photo that’s not even Arrakis? Did they even see the other pictures obviously not.

That last guy, sam trying to pretend like he’s joking, yet is constantly going on about trolls movie & how he told the world it’s an awesome movie, does he want Dune to be pretty & bright like Trolls or something? 🙄

I agree about Leto in BR49, he's the one bad thing about it. That movie had a celeb cast too though, I mean Ryan Gosling ffs, but he was perfect in it. Denis has yet to make anything even remotely "mediocre" and he supposedly loves this property. If this turns out poorly it simply wasn't meant to be.

As for the art design, I can see the point, however I kinda feel like Denis is a bit self-restrained in that respect. What I mean is, I don't know if he could make a wacky looking movie and have it be good, he seems to self serious I guess. Cool art didn't save Lynch's movie anyway.

Whatever, fuck these people. I could've gone for one more hour of Blade Runner 49 - I want a humourless director to be making Dune.

THEY CAN FLY NOW!! :messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy::messenger_tears_of_joy:

Fuck your humour

Kynes may have had little physical page or screen time, but was absolutely a major player in Dune. The impact of his work with the Fremen ripples out for the entire series.

People are FUCKING INSANE.

Cool, so we’re down to needing actors of the correct religion playing roles. really need a government committee to ensure we’re hitting the necessary quotas, here.

Can’t wait till they see the movie and realise a white guy fulfills their ancient prophecy, and that a bunch of white women invented their entire religion, on the off chance that they make need to take advantage of it.

Dune is set something like 10000 years in the future. There are definitely religious aspects to it, but you're largely looking at the merging of current religions towards a collective series of beliefs, whose practices have been altered and adapted over thousands of years. Any ideas of a continuous identity are wishful thinking.

Dune '84 and Lynch's hallucinogenic visions are repulsive. It makes me feel sick to my stomach whenever I think about it. I've seen it once in full.

I hope that Dune '20 has a strong emotional core that resonates with the mainstream audience to ensure a sequel or two. The fact that this is not pitched as a trilogy from the get go is promising.

Can you not infect this thread with twitter hot takes, their opinions are not worth discussing unless are part of production... I can't engage with tweets (what a waste of time that would be) from a neogaf account.
Argh...this guys in it. I know exactly how this is going to turn out.
Ok? I'll say that based on Ex Machina and A Most Violent Year he's an excellent choice. You seem disappointed. Is it because he's "that Star Wars guys" to you? Dune is his chance to rid himself of that temporary image. This film marks return to form after his happy-go-lucky rebel role. He'll pull off an authoritative role easily.

I didnt watch star wars after rouge 1 or whatever its called. But he was a laughable Apocalypse.

Its pretty obvious from the screenshots and cast that theyre targeting a mainstream audience. The movie will release and it will stay in the minds of mainstream audiences as long as Terminator Genesis did and then buried like Tron Evolution.

I don't like Oscar Isaac in Star Wars, but it's not like Duke Leto is that much of a major character and generally I think it's premature to shit on casting before you see the final product. Kinda wish that Deakins was doing this film too, but Rogue One was by far the best looking film out of the Disney Star Wars movies.

When you retcon established characters then you're done, Denis might as well sat down and shat out his own credibility then wiped his arse up and down with the screenplay 🤡

If Baron Vladimir Harkonnen is not a tyranical obese homosexual with a taste for teenaged slave boys I'm noping the fuck out. All that shit was in the books for a reason, and if this jackass wants to turn one of my favorite villains into some bland PC-friendly bad guy I'm done with this film before it releases.

Stellan Skarsgard, fat suit, slave boys, now!

Repulsive and sickening images... in a David Lynch film??

This is my shocked face:

tumblr_inline_nwyow1OrLk1r4j8j1_400.gif

Anyhow, the original Dune film has many things going for it:

The movie has some spectacular moments and a truly bizarre tone that sets it apart from the rest of the sci-fi genre (David Lynch being the reason, naturally). I highly recommend it, despite its final form not quite coming together as well as it could.

REASONS TO WATCH DUNE:

HOTTEST SPACE BABE EVER

HOT MOM

"WEIRD-BONER" HOT LOVE INTEREST

CAPTAIN PICARD

HORRIFYING CREATURES

SPACE WITCH & TINY SPACE WITCH

VAGINAL IMAGERY

STING

need I go on?

And I always will prefer idiosyncratic, truly weird takes to anything from the corporate entertainment world that I worry might be seeping into Denis's pocketbook. I mean... instead of the visionary cinematographer Deakins that he used for Blade Runner, his DofP for this will be the guy who Disney picked to shoot Rogue One. Even the slightest association with Disney-style entertainment committees and the people who allow themselves to be employed by the former is absolute poison to me.

It may still be great--and I was extremely excited when first hearing that Denis V was doing it-- but to this point I've considered every single piece of casting or other news (and every released image) so far to be concerning and lacking, without any bright spots just yet to raise my hopes.

Yep, the casting especially.
It's the who is who of the current Hollywood elite.

Still, cautiously optimistic on this one, though I have yet to see a Villeneuve film that doesn't put me to sleep. But with Dune that might be a good thing.
