Dust 514 |OT| You don't need to pay to win

So I noticed in the previous threads most people who disliked the game began to enjoy it once the uprising patch was uploaded but one of the major reviewers I follow is GT and they trashed it.

Anyone care to explain through their own experiences why they have enjoyed it regardless of whether or not they have seen the same flaws as the GT review?

Nice OT, dude:)

Need to give this game a go. Finally got it all updated. Might give it a go later today or tomorrow :)

Good job on the OT, i have this installed but have yet to boot it, i'll likely give it a try tonight. I've read some reviews but what are gafs impressions?

That's a really good OT, and I'm glad you went with the title you did.

I'd give my impressions as I've been playing it since last August, but I don't play other console FPS games so I don't have much of a frame of reference.

Also, I suck at Dust 514. Still keep playing though, which should say something I guess.

The GameTrailers review had some false information. For instance they said the Scrambler Rifle can only be used if you use real money, which is not true at all. They also greatly exaggerated on the cost of premium guns, saying you could spend $5 on a few sniper rifles and then lose them if you die. In actuality all premium guns only cost pennies, and again they are no different than the guns bought with in-game money except you unlock them one tier early. It did have some valid complaints however, such as the EVE to Dust link not being so clear. That is something CCP will need to work on as they continue to update Dust 514 over the years.

Not that it matters too much, but anyone knows if this game has trophies? I was looking for a trophy list and didn't find anything, it's weird since trophies are supposed to be mandatory but since this is a free 2 play game then I don't know.

Unfortunately it does not and is unknown if it ever will. But don't let that sway you away from giving it a try!

So do the planetary conquests have ncp aliens or something? Not totally sure how that works
No, Planetary Conquest is 100% player driven.

However, there may be a PVE element added to it. Currently in Planetary Conquest if you own a district you set a 1 hour time frame for when you can be attacked to prevent people stealing your stuff when you are sleeping. So what do you do during the other 23 hours of the day? This is where they are considering the PVE in.

PVE is already for sure coming as something to do outside of Planetary Conquest, this would just be yet another way to experience it.

Considering CCP wants to keep supporting this game for 10 years (assuming players support it enough, of course), trophies could be pretty scary. EVE Online just had its 10 year anniversary, and there are ships in the game that require months of resources from dozens of players. For all I know, the same thing might happen with Dust when they get around to adding the giant robots.

Is there already (or going to be) a GAF clan?
Downloading it as we speak, my SEN ID is:

dashkap (identify yourself as gaffer tho)

Gamepad player atm, maybe I'll switch to Move later on. I don't have an headset to talk but I'll pick one up tomorrow if the clan becomes a thing.

GREAT OP, btw! Very, very good job especially considering it is your first. MMO F2P games are one of the few genres/business models where a huge OP filled with info to the brim actually makes sense and doesn't come away as just a poor, bloated, PR ad.

So a planetary conquest wouldnt necessarily involve conflict? Like a planet is yours for the taking if there is no one to stop you?

What is the objective?

Also seperate note what are the EVE players gaining from the conquests, whats the resource they need?

Is it a brand new resource or whats up?

Correct. If there is a district on a planet that no other corporation has claimed, you can simply claim it without conflict. However once Planetary Conquest launched all the districts where claimed within just a few minutes, so now if you want one you will have to fight for it. Once you do get one though, if nobody attacks you then you won't have to fight to keep it.

The objective is simply to have as many districts as you can because owning a part of the EVE universe is pretty awesome! There are reasons to do this other than that though. Each district generates clones, and if you own the district you get the clones. You can also change the surface infrastructure of your district in order to get specific bonuses like faster clone generation or high clone storage capacity. With these clones you can either use them to attack other districts, defend your own, or sell excess clones to other corporations for large amounts of in-game money. These clones are a hot commodity, this is by far the fastest way to make a ton of money.

On EVE side, being apart of a corporation that owns one of these districts will also give you bonuses such as a 10% reduction to manufacturing time at POSes per district owned or a 5% reduction in POS fuel consumption per district owned. Now I'm not an EVE player so I honestly have no clue what any of that means, but it sounds like something they'd want to look into.

I really like the overall idea and upgrade/skill system in Dust. And, having played a fair amount of EVE Online, I really dig the world and art direction too.

I like that the game is free.

What I don't like is the shooting physics. It feels disjointed and poor. Even playing a medic is real weak since the lock-on of the healing gun is so bad. I hope that one day they will patch the game so much it'll get fixed.

There was indeed an issue with the aiming that a few people were experiencing, they addressed it in a small update that deployed a couple days ago. Don't really have much else to say, it's never really been an issue from my perspective.

Heads up, CCP is running a new event called the Templar Manhunt.
http://dust514.com/news/2013/05/tem...n-rewards-and-test-drive-exclusive-dropsuits/

The Templars are the first soldiers to use this new transfer-of-consciousness technology and originally served under the Amarr Empire. The event is pretty straight forward, you can sign up to be chosen to play as a Templar (will require one open character slot on your account) and get rewarded for completing a number of matches, or get paid for hunting them down.

You can sign up to be chosen as a Templar here,

I just have to say great job on the OT. There is a hell of a lot more to Dust, but you'd need another 10 threads to properly cover it and this one gets the basics across very well.

I'll add my main Dust characters to the pile while I'm here:-

PSN username: OgTheClever
Dust 514 Characters: OgTheEnigma, OgTheNinja (Enigma is my main, Ninja is a scout nova knifer only

EDIT: The easiest way for people from GAF to squad up would be to join the NeoGAF channel in game. It would show any members who are online in Dust and be an easy method of communication. Seventy_X_Seven could you maybe edit your second post to mention this?

Just type in "NeoGAF" I'm assuming?

The Planetside 2 thread has a player database that is really simple. Maybe you could PM their OP to see how to make your own questionnaire/spreadsheet-type deal.

Yeah, it doesn't even need to be capitalised. Unfortunately, because the channel was first created in Eve before Dust integration, it's currently limited to text chat only. New user channels do have working voice chat. This was acknowledged as being a bug a couple of months ago, but I haven't heard anything since.

It would still work for finding people online in Dust and then squading up and using voice chat.

When you clicked the link did it lead to this message?

"Congratulations, recruit! You’ve been invited by a friend to join the ranks of DUST 514, a free-to-play first-person shooter on the PlayStation 3 . Check for your exclusive Recruit Assault Rifle and 7-Day Recruit Booster when you log into DUST 514. But first, you’ll need to create your account.

Begin creating your DUST 514 account by signing into the PlayStation®Network. If you don't have a PlayStation®Network account you can create one."

When you sign onto Dust 514 right before you select which of your 3 potential character you want to play as it should give a prompt to assign the rewards to one of them.

I played during the early closed beta period right up until the beta went open. The game is fun when it's the ONLY thing your playing. Shooter mechanics are par at best, but the added skill tree creates a ton of depth. My main character was an anti vehicle specialist and it was pretty satisfying blowing up million isk tanks on a regular basis. I was playing with a pretty solid corp called OTB (on the brink) and it was a lot of fun. I took about a week off and after that totally lost interest. Haven't been back since then. **This was prior to the uprising patch**

Huh. And you for sure haven't played Dust 514 before, even in beta?

If you really want to get that 7 day active skill point booster and Recruit Assault Rifle you could probably submit a ticket here
http://dust514.com/community/support/

Just state what happened and provide the link you used. They are usually pretty good about it.

Yeah I had already filed a support ticket.
Never played DUST with my account or on my ps3 to this day.

Just started playing, enjoying it so far. Are there any in depth how-to-play FAQS around? I'm having trouble wrapping my head around a few things.

After playing one of the first BETA builds, I was under the impression that this game wasn't going anywhere. After playing this for the past three nights, it seems I was wrong. This game is fun as hell, especialy while in a squad with friends.

Hopefully they keep good with thier long term goals here.

Exactly. Too be honest if CCP didn't have such a good track record with how they've continually progressed EVE and had subscription growth every year since launch then I'm not sure how much faith I would of given Dust back in beta. Glad to see we are now starting to see this progression unfold right in front of us.

Been enjoying this game a lot more since the most recent updates. Feels like more a full-fledged shooter. Went something like 25-3 in a recent round with quite a few captures (or "hacks"); was really satisfying.

I bought the skill that allows me to use the repair tool, but I can't figure out how to equip it so I can use it in battle. I can't seem to find it when I'm fitting my suit. Can anyone help? I feel like maybe there is one more skill I need or something like that.

Once you got the skill, go to the Marketplace and search for repair tools under the Equipment tab. Buy some with your in-game money and put it on your fitting in one of the equipment slots (bottom right corner of your fitting circle).

Oooohhhhhh OK. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate the help. I should have just asked here in the first place instead of struggling with it for an hour.

Is there a in-depth explanation of this somewhere? I've been playing Dust 514 for a few days and thing are starting to get clearer, but this ... how the hell does this work, exactly?
