Dynasty Warriors 8 + XL (PS3) / CE (PSV/PS4) |OT| Don't Pursue Lu Bu (In Next Gen)

Help! I'm escorting the carriage in Lu Bu's story line (mission 2?), and the big fat guy (dong zhuo?) keeps dying during the second phase of archers? Any tips on getting him clear? One minute he has full health, the next...dead. I've tried four times, and keep losing at the second archer ambush.

EDIT

I think i found a youtube video that show it...

Is the Vita version the pre-patch version or something? I think that's what I've gathered from reading the thread. When it got patched it looked like a completely different game. It's not out in none UK yet but I'd bet it'll be the same as the NA version. Kind of disappointing it's not in the game by standard.

Edit: So it's not like this then? If so damn hurry up patch http://youtu.be/_EkfOy-KcxU

Is there any sort of good "crash course" guide or something out there? I'm trying to start Story Mode on Normal, and I'm just getting my ass handed to me. Haven't played a DW since PS2 and it's not quite like the "riding a bike" situation I was thinking it would be lol. The tutorial didn't help a ton.

I hope we don't have to wait too long. The game is pretty amazing, but this issue, the inability to invite cross-system, and the DOF problem are all hampering my enjoyability of the title. .
Yeah..TK needs to release the DOF patch asap. This is like turok 64 all over again.
PS4 version's framerate does't seem all that much better than DW8 PS3. I really should've waited for the PC version.

Thanks, Sophia. I've got no qualms now about getting it on Vita, and playing with my friend who has a PS3.

And with cross-save, when I eventually get a PS4, I shouldn't have a problem preserving my save and continuing to play with my PS3 friend!

One question about the trophies: if I unlock the Platinum on PS4, for example, and then I buy the Vita version and I use the cross-save feature, will I unlock another Platinum as a Vita game?

Or is there only a trophy set shared by both versions?

I didn't play original DW8, and I hadn't really put much time in a DW game in a long time...but omg, what the fuck is with the difficulty curve of the campaign? I got the CE on ps4, so I got both games, and I figured I'd start with DW8 content.

I'm playing the Wei campaign, and on the second mission, I keep dying because of fucking Lu Bu.

I know, I'm not supposed to kill Diao Chan, but the bitch chases me all over the place! I try my damnedest to ignore her, but she gets in the way of my hits practically committing suicide. eventually either I kill her by accident, or one of the NPCs, which enrages Lu Bu, and he chases me to no end, and I can't escape him long enough to finish the stage.

Sophia

If you're playing the Wei campaign, you should be able to ignore Lu Bu and Diaochan entirely because Dian Wei will hold them off. He won't chase you all the way to the city portion of the map near the top.

Thinking about picking up a PS4 for this and Infamous. How's the PS4 version?

It runs in 1080p, and can show as many enemies as possible onscreen. Framerate doesn't maintain 60 FPS, but it rarely ever drops below 30. Also there's a few bugs, such as the join option not working right (again) in online play and no sound when streaming over Twitch.

Why not just get on a horse and ride past Lu Bu and Diaochan? You'll have long thrown them off by the time you reach Dong Zhuo.

That is exactly what you are suppose to do and what they tell you to do in the cutscene even. :p

In order to go further, I have to defeat another soldier that was past Diaochan, and she kept following me to him. Even when Diaochan was just struggling, Lu Bu came running to help, and in just trying to get other enemies off me, she some how got killed, which enraged Lu Bu. I tried running past her, but she keeps following me. Walking in front of me so that I'll hit her without trying to.

Don't pursue Lu Bu.

It shouldn't take that long to defeat the officer guarding the gate to the city, certainly not long enough for Diaochan to catch up with you and get harmed enough for Lu Bu to catch up with you. I even killed Diaochan as soon as I reached her, and Lu Bu moved forward a bit but otherwise sat around fighting all the other officers while I rushed Dong Zhuo.

Does anyone know how to increase your character's leader xp? I'm playing Ambition mode, and the leader experience stays at 0 even after multiple battles.

*Story spoilers ahead.

Oh and what's the deal with
every major Wu leader dying? I'm a bit into the Wu campaign, and these guys keep dying all over the place. First the dad, then the older brother, then one strategist after another. The fuck? I don't remember so much dying in DW3/4 lol

Welcome to
Wu
It'll stop...mostly. Some of the other factions have the same. It's just part of the story.

Does each character have their own story in this one? Or are the stories just faction based?

Faction based stories. Each stage has one to four characters for you to play. It's actually quite nice because it allows for more detailed story events, and some awesome side stages and the hypothetical routes.

However, you can play any story mode stage you've completed in free mode, as any character of your choosing. Free mode has additional optional objectives to complete too.

I believe you have to command the bodyguards to do something (their skills so far is what I have done) and you'll gain some leadership exp.

Not sure if there are any other ways to gain leadership.

I guess it is too much to ask for individual stories again with the amount of characters they must be at by now. What I liked about it was how each battle was tilted towards that character's perspective. Many had their own specific cutscenes, and some even had obscure battles that only a small number of characters were involved in... This all kept the story mode a bit fresher, not knowing what you might see from character to character.

With the way I play, I don't like the sound of each story battle being restricted to a small set of characters. I like to play one character at a time -- maxing them out (special weapon and all) before moving onto the next one. Which reminds me... Does each character have a special weapon to obtain? I love that part of the series.

The problem is the stories were utterly nonsensical under that old arrangement - which is arguably what Story mode should do - tell a coherent story. You do still get different objectives assigned depending on which character you choose in Story mode. You still can use specific characters all you like in Free, Ambition and Challenge (in XL) Modes to max them out. DW7 had Conquest Mode as well - believe me, you can get all the time you want in on any given character.

In DW8, There are several special weapons per weapon type (I believe 1 per star level?) and I know at least some of them are earned by performing specific tasks in missions. They're pretty rare.

Every weapon is assigned to exactly 1 character for the EX weapon. Anyone else can use it, but the character who's designated EX for it has 1 (or 2 in XL) special moves w/ it.

Did a bang up job on his voice man, but I haven't used him yet b/c I have to use Lu Lingqi any chance I get! That cross-spear is badass.

At least we're not seeing Sun Jian alive during Wu Zhang Plains. Man those early Dynasty Warriors games were weird.

It's kind of funny. Although the designs and weapons are more fantasy based now than before, the storyline actually sticks much closer to the novel, history, and some other sources in some cases, than in the older games.

But it's Dynasty Warriors... I don''t care how nonsensical the story is. I care much more about the amount of content the game has and how the cutscenes and situations will change from character to character. Faction based stories are more coherent, but they're also very limiting compared to the old arrangement. Instead of a huge number of different story combinations, you get the same story over and over again, battle for battle.

Remember how just about every character even had their very own set of CG cutscenes? The old formula was worth it on that alone.

i'm with you on this. I understand why KOEI went this route in terms of development time and story consistency, but i feel some of the magic of going through each character storyline in a few specific stages, and seeing things through their eyes added to replay value.

plus ever since they introduced the new story mode it's been nothing but a soap opera of sadness. Sad, slow tunes. Constant grief and sorrow. No longer GUITAR RIFFS UP THE WAZOO, WITH MID AFTERNOON SETTINGS AND PEOPLE RIDING TO BATTLE TO DICK AROUND

I am also not that keen on the "everyone can use all weapons" thing. Sure the EX moves are what separate them, but individual weapons still made the characters more varied in terms of gameplay.

but then again i was also a glutton who liked the old "level your weapon and find items with different bonuses" of the dw3-dw4 era.

I also miss horses throwing your ass off them if you didnt level your character. RED HARE DONT WANT NO SCRUB ON HIS MAGNIFICENT MANE!

DW5 was by far the best of the ps2 incarnations, but "all look same" syndrome had already set in by then, so I feel it's one of the more overlooked entries. I hope that eventually they do an HD incarnation with the current roster and individual character paths.

Playing with different characters in the same stage usually tweaks some elements of the stage too.

I always thought what you mention was actually the biggest problem of the old format. Certain battles appeared over and over in multiple people's stories. Now, basically only a few rare battle are even repeated thrice(In DW8, I think it's only Battle of Red Cliffs and Fan Castle), unless you actually want to replay them with multiple characters, or want to unlock the optional events and hidden stages.

plus ever since they introduced the new story mode it's been nothing but a soap opera of sadness. Sad, slow tunes. Constant grief and sorrow. No longer GUITAR RIFFS UP THE WAZOO, WITH MID AFTERNOON SETTINGS AND PEOPLE RIDING TO BATTLE TO DICK AROUND

The What If stories in the original DW8 are all much more upbeat than the standard ones at least. (I haven't played XL yet). I actually like the dramatic tone though.

Nonsensical is great - but I at least want to be able to follow an arc of what's going on, and what happens before or after something else. I also love the hyped up melodrama mesmerMan complained about. It just tickles my funny bone the way people so overdramatically die or hype themselves and their troops up.

Very few story missions repeat between campaigns, only a small handful of pivotal battles. As I mentioned before, playing different characters in each story mission does give you different objectives a lot of the time. And since there have only been two games following this new story mode style, they've largely focused on different battles, which is why DW7's story is a little more coherent than DW8's. For their effort at trying to avoid retreading the same ground, they skim over some moderately important battles so they can cover different ground.

Aside from that, I feel like Ambition mode is what's currently designed for grinding out a specific characters. And there's always Free mode. CG cutscenes for each character would be nice to have again though. I can't imagine how many resources it'd take for them to create 82+ of them.

In short though, I can see your guys' point. We just place greater value on different elements.

I've never really played a DW game except for one of the psp ones and it was bhaddddd. I think it was dynasty warriors 1. Is this only sold by GameStop for the ps4 version?

Gamestop and BestBuy both have it and the Vita version. Nobody knows what's up w/ Amazon.

the dramatic tone is fine if you limit it to the ruler lines of each kingdom's story mode.

I bought it. Here comes a noob. What mode should I play first

I guess at least one of the tutorial stages (they are all the same but with different characters) to get familiar with it.

Then, pick whatever kingdom looks promising in the story mode and go from there.

It's kinda hard to go all historical, since they all cover roughly the same time frame (expect Jin and Lu Bu's).

I say choose either easy or normal difficulty to start with.

Definitely hit up Story Mode -> Tutorial first to get a read on all the gameplay mechanics. There's one for each faction but they're all exactly the same.

If you want to get acquainted with the overall story and the vast majority of the cast of characters and how they relate to each other, Story Mode is where you'd want to start. I think most people will recommend you play Wei, Wu, Shu, and then Jin. You can just pick whichever faction you think you like best though if you want. Jin takes place chronologically last though.

Story Mode also unlocks its maps for play in Free Mode w/ any character.

If you just want to pick a character you think looks cool and work on upgrading them, hit up Ambition Mode.

Here's the one pro-tip I'm going give you w/o being prompted - don't feel obligated to stop and fight all the little guys. They're generally not worth your time. You want to focus on anybody with a name (Lu Xu, Chen Gong, etc.) or a title (Gatekeeper, Unit Commander (sometimes). Only stop to kill the rest of the fodder if you need to fill up your Musou or Rage meters, and don't feel afraid to blow a meter or two to clear a bunch of them all out. They'll likely drop enough items to re-fill everything anyway.

Oh, and Musou Spring and Rage Springs are my two favorite skills to equip.

Hope you enjoy these games as much as I do. :)

My pal PS4 copy shipped today from shopto btw! Can't wait!

Story mode should be fine, even for a beginner. I wouldn't bother with the easy setting to be honest. Normal is usually fine is not a bit too easy in these games.

This might be a weird question, and I couldn't find the answer anywhere, but if I get the PS4 complete edition and transfer my data from the PS3 version of DW8, can I still unlock the PS3 trophies I hadn't gotten yet by playing the PS4 version? From what I can tell the PS3 version of DW8 and the complete edition have totally different trophy lists...

Awesome basically what everyone above me said is a good way to start. After that if you just want to mess around and see what character you like play in freemode on easy.

Also if you do ever get a scenario where Lu Bu appears run like hell. lol
