E3 2008 Nintendo Conference

Hardcore gamers didn't support the Big N when they were losing market share generation after generation and on the brink of home console extinction, regardless of the Goldeneyes, the Mario 64s, the Orcarina of Time's, the Wind Wakers, the RE4s, etc. At what point does a company or even a person decide to say "Fuck it" after putting out great effort to please someone only to get neglected time and time again?

I wouldn't be surprised if they gave another certain title it's own presser. I'm talking specifically, but won't comment on it. Why they didn't show it here is beyond me. Perhaps they now know the mainstream press follows them everywhere, and don't want to let them know they can still have appeal with the hardcore gamer.

If you for a second think that this isn't OUR medium, then you might as well fucking abandon it now, but I'm not going to watch my 20 years of gaming be crucified on the handle-bars of a Wii Sports Resort Jet Ski.

This is true. We all spent our 300-400 dollars ont he damn thing. We all ran around like mad trying to find the damn thing. and this is the respect we get. horrible..

If you want to have a Casual Games Summit Nintendo, that is perfectly fine.
But do it on your own time.

This is E3. This is our time.

That is what E3 is now...
TGS and Leipzig are more for the core gamer. Still, Reggie is a crazy person if he really thinks AC and GTA:DS are enough to satisfy core gamers during the autumn/winter.

I've been pointing it out weeks ago but all I got was angry responses.

This post makes me feel like I'm living in a twilight zone where Neogaf threads populated by Nintendo fanboys don't bark down anyone who suggests that Wii is a console made for casual and non-gamers.

Well outside of Rhythm Heaven coming to the US (which wasn't in the conference, only the press kit) I can safely just sit back and laugh at the situation.

Nintendo fans need to realize exactly what brought Nintendo back to the top, and how horrible they were when they were at the top before. So none of this should surprise you. I just hope you all learned your lesson and will stop trying to argue with rational legitimate gamers about how much you pretend to like their casualized garbage.

If we can come to that deal, I promise GAF will be so much better for everyone.
Says the guy who proposed "Wii Prove Wii Fit". STFU.

As long as itprintsmoney.gif is valid this is what you should expect from Nintendo. As long as there is demand for more hardware than they can produce they really don't have to sweat the software, much less try to please the non-casuals.

Selling you a WiiSports blackbox is the goal, anything else you buy for it is just icing on the cake.

All you people telling me that Nintendo is not FOR ME anymore can go eat my ass.

Every show they at least throw me a bone. Every time they announce Wii Fit, they announce a new core IP to go along with it. They always do that. And I have no problem with it. I buy Mario Galaxy, I ignore Wii Fit. That's my agreement with Nintendo and I don't care if they make Wii Poop.

But THIS....not one new game for core gamers. Not one new Wii Ware announcement. Nothing even slipped into the press kit.

Nintendo is my old friend who doesn't even want to be seen with me anymore. And if you are okay with that, then what the fuck did you like Nintendo for in the first place?

Go ahead and defend this all you want, but Nintendo better announce some stuff soon.

Bingo. Hell, I wouldn't even care if they dump all the hardcore shit in the P.R after all the big bad mainstream media has left. But so far, there's shit and no indication that more is coming.

Pretty much. It's as if they are actually going out of their way to exclude core/veteran/hardcore gamers to better their image to soccer moms and such

No. No they don't.

Frisbee!?!?! That's how you introduce your new peripheral!?!?!?!?!

And a music game that has you basically shaking your controller to play out pretty much predetermined music!? WTF!?!?!
Sorry to repeat myself...but....

Frisbee!?!?! That's how you introduce your new peripheral!?!?!?!?!

Wow. You have quite the sense of entitlement.

You don't "own" the medium, and throwing a hissy fit about the fact that this it's opening up is just sad. Games as a medium aren't leaving you behind, they're keeping you satiated while expanding their horizons to people who don't necessarily want to shoot, kill, and level up. Millions are still being poured into the creation of hardcore games, and they're not going anywhere. Now there's certainly something to be said about the Wii not being quite what you're looking for if you're into hardcore games, but that's like being upset that the kids' section at your local library doesn't have the 600 page epics you desire. And it certainly wouldn't warrant screaming about how kids' sections are ruining the medium of books.

It was a OK conference...I was hoping for atleast 1 hardcore gamee and especially a storage solution but oh well...:\

Wii-Speak_1216141809.jpg

So, why the box just to plug in a microphone? I like your HDD idea, but why wouldn't they mention it?

Oh, they will. And by God they are the winner, really.

More money. In the. Fucking Bank.

But I do own a Wii, and the reason I own it came out. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime III. They were totally rad. And I had a few bonuses along the way Super Paper Mario, Endless Ocean and Boom Blox.

But if this is the future, I see no reason for us to NOT react exactly like this. Since this is a message board for hardcore gamers, and most of us who aren't hypocrites don't have a tolerance for such bullshit.

Well said. Nintendo has always been my favorite company (with Mario, Metroid, and Zelda)...but they just aren't interested in me anymore.

Why should I be interested in them?

Hyperbole much? Did Sony and Microsoft announce they were quitting the gaming business at this conference and I missed it?

I just got home like 20 mins ago. Can someone give a quick summary of the general reaction to the conference? I read the OP and am in the process of checking out the new announcements... but what's the overall sentiment like?

edit, WOW just read the last page. That bad?
Basically the conference was bad, as usual Nintendo standard lately which is kinda funny since they release the hounds during the next few days of the expo most of the time when people actually get on to play them or new games are announced out of the blue (Smash Bros anyone?).

People over-reacting, usual Nintendo bait, Amir0x throwing in his usual 2cent opinion and people glorifying it as gospel, lots of pictures ensued, "hardcore" gamers feeling left out (here's a hint: buy another console fools) because they've already gone through a Zelda, Mario, Metroid and Fire Emblem title within the span of a year or so.

Of all the people in this thread threatening to sell their Wiis, I predict approximately zero of them will actually do it.

Come on, people. You're being silly.

It's hardly a threat... It's just that I haven't enjoyed playing the thing since Mario Galaxy came out. (please don't list other games on the platform).

so why should I keep it? If I'm not digging it, out it goes. I don't see enough interesting games on it for the next 6 -12 months.

It's not like the Wii is the only console I own.

I hate to be one of those people but as someone who's put years of effort into just being competent on a real wind instrument, I can't help but see WiiMusic as an insulting mockery.

Oh goodness...get over that, please.

So was the motion plus proven to be shenanigans? :lol
Nope, it looks quite nice. Now someone needs to do a swordfighting game. Maybe a good Red Steel 2.

And WiiSpeak only costs $30, so there's probably not going to be a hard drive included with it.

AniHawk said:
That pretty much wraps it up for the known Wii ______ games. All the demos from 2006 except the Airplane/Pilotwings thing have been made into games.

Wii Bowling/Tennis/Baseball/etc -> Wii Sports
Wii Motorsports -> Wii Sports Resort
Wii Music -> Wii Music
Wii Health Pack (never shown but always known) -> Wii Fit

They'll either have to start making sequels to these games next year or start making new Wii ______ titles. I had a meeting to go to, so I missed the conference. Doesn't sound like I missed much though. Was looking forward to seeing how Wii Music turned out at the very least.

Also, I hate to play the "wait until" card, but you really have to be foolish to think this is all Nintendo's doing. Nintendo's found out that their claim to success at E3 is to reveal casual software that the mainstream media will lap up. Worked with Wii Sports, worked with Wii Fit, will probably work with this show too.

What about Wii Read. Digital book reading and you can turn the pages with 1:1 motion. Also lets you save your page like you would a game save. Download new books from the Wii Shop channel! Nintendo could attack the school markets next with this title.

If you are a Wii only console owner this Gen you are not a Gamer. What a slap in the face that conference was.

Come on, it's the most casual friendly console by far, but there are games like Mario Galaxy, Zelda, Metroid, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, all ready out with games like Wario Land, Fatal Frame IV, Mad World, Pikmin 3, in the pipe line. I don't have time to play games as much as I used to, so Nintendo's release schedule fits me fine. I will pick up another console some day, but I don't feel disappointed as a gamer because Nintendo has a shitty conference as usual.

Nintendo tends to make their best announcements under the radar, so I expect some cool things to be announced later (much like Rhythm Heaven).

it's either an AC adapter or the box has it's own little processor that filters out bad words on the fly... either way it looks ugly as fuck.

How the hell can Reggie call Animal Crossing hardcore? AC is the definition of a casual game. Then he brings up GTA for DS? What the heck happened to Nintendo?

Reggie is a joke.
Miyamoto is a dead beat.
The lady with the hurt wrist is Nintendo's annoying jester.
Nintendo has no clue what games are about anymore.
WiiMusic isn't even a game. It's not even a non-game.

OMG!!!

I am the biggest Nintendo Fanboy on earth... Anyone who knows me can vouch for that, and even I thought this press con. was a fuckin joke.

Where M$'s press con was lame, this was just abysmal...

Did they even show any real games???

I guess they have finally given up on their hardcore gamer fanbase.

No new DS redesign
No Punch Out
No NSMB2
No Starfox
No video reels of 3rd party games
No external Storage device

I mean I really hope they are not trying to anchor their holiday season with Animal Crossing? or the Wii Sports Resort...

:(

Wii Music may very well be Shigeru Miyamoto's 'Jump the Shark' moment.

Truly a sad day to be a gamer.

As opposed to all those Non-gamers out there, fuck those guys.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but Call of Duty on the Wii actually looked very nice graphically. And it seemed to control well to.

i just hope to god this isn't all of nintendo's fall line up.

maybe they just don't feel any need for megatons at E3 anymore (except every other year or so). last year's conference along with this one solidifes that theory.

Ok that was not very good but at the same time people need to chill out.

Why would Nintendo showcase games that much of their new audience doesnt really care about and waste the largest amount of media coverage any game company can hope for.

Because seriously whether they show hardcore games at the conference or later in E3 we are going to hear and read about them regardless, so it makes far more sense to use the largest amount of coverage theyre going to get with the conference to reach out to their new customers who dont monitor gaming sites and message boards like us but rely on mainstream and traditional media outlets.

So maybe, hopefully, we will get more news and games from Nintendo before E3 ends. Its not as if the window of opportunity has completely closed we still have two more days. Ill wait at least till the end of Thursday before I curse Nintendo.

I didn't expect it to be great, it's obvious Nintendo uses E3 now as a way to address casuals. It's unfortunate, and lame for us core gamers obviously, but I'm sure I'll be a lot more impressed with what's behind doors and on the showroom floor.

Nintendo hasn't given up on the hardcore gamer, but they have given up on them at E3.

I love how Amirox addresses Nintendo fans as if he isn't one.

Anyway, as far as Press Conferences go, Microsoft is in the lead, but they both were pretty mediocre.

Wii Music looks horrible. You just press random buttons and flail your arms and the software plays notes related to the song being played. The motion control detection seemed real off (especially with the drums). The only cool thing about it was the use of the balance board for the pedals.

Why would anyone want this game though? Its air guitar which you have to pay for. At least stuff like Rock Band and Guitar Hero take skill to make the music come out right.

But Wii is the market leader, all the big software hits have to come to Wii. 3rd parties would be stupid not to bring their games to Wii. Sounds like if you want the big hits you're better off with a PS3 or 360. Nintendo has become Wal-Mart.

I normally don't agree with junior members on much of anything. But seriously, all of those points are true.

This conference will come back to haunt Nintendo.

Where was Punch Out? :( Not enough games shown in general. The people spelling doom in this thread are morons though. We already know this isn't every game coming to Wii. Or does the conference not having Fatal Frame, Guitar Hero, Mad World, and Wario Land suddenly mean they don't exist anymore? It's obvious that Nintendo doesn't use these conferences as a games showcase, but more as a PR mouthpiece(compared to the ratio that Microsoft showed off their already announced games versus PR speak).

It wasn't just that Nintendo was casual as I expected.

It was the level of casualness and the complete lack of any hardcore support. Other years they showed off a few decent hardcore games. This year, no hardcore games at all really. Additionally, many people call Guitar Hero casual, but Wii Music makes Guitar Hero look like actually learning to play a real guitar.

I think MS announced enough casual stuff that Nintendo won't be declared the clear winner by the mainstream press
