Stop freaking out. Wii will have plenty of games for you to play. Nintendo just isn't putting them in the spotlight at E3 anymore. Nintendo E3 just isn't for "veteran" gamers anymore.

If you didn't see this coming, you haven't been paying attention.

Nintendo is making bajillions of dollars appealing to the polar opposite of GAF. You. Do. Not. Matter.

This!

Nintendo is treating this like the business that it is and are going for the market that is bringing them the most. But don't let that stop the meltdowns, this is quite entertaing.:lol :lol :lol

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but Call of Duty on the Wii actually looked very nice graphically. And it seemed to control well to.

The co-up looked nice too.

But shhh. You'll spoil the the sense of entitlement, the I AM ANGRY - HOW CAN THIS BE mood some are portraying.

But seriously, do. Or whatever the Nintendo days thing is called now. As I said, there was at least one announcement missing from the presser. Really, I'm lost as to why, but it should be coming soon, if not by the end of e3.

*Waits for mainstream news outlets to declare Nintendo the winner*
Well, yes and no. LAST year, they did indeed have a similar conference, but we also knew that we would be playing Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, and various other core games within the next 12 months. This year? The lineup is completely barren and they avoided announcing anything new. For this reason, the conference this year is much worse.

Ok that was not very good but at the same time people need to chill out.

Why would Nintendo showcase games that much of their new audience doesnt really care about and waste the largest amount of media coverage any game company can hope for.

Because seriously whether they show hardcore games at the conference or later in E3 we are going to hear and read about them regardless, so it makes far more sense to use the largest amount of coverage theyre going to get with the conference to reach out to their new customers who dont monitor gaming sites and message boards like us but rely on mainstream and traditional media outlets.

So maybe, hopefully, we will get more news and games from Nintendo before E3 ends. Its not as if the window of opportunity has completely closed we still have two more days. Ill wait at least till the end of Thursday before I curse Nintendo.

Not surprising to me, but I think regardless of what comes out later, the conference is just a really blatant example of how Nintendo doesn't give a shit about "core" gamers. That what people are reacting to here, but a lot of people here realized this long, long, ago and have moved on to MS and Sony for the majority of their gaming.

It's hardly a threat... It's just that I haven't enjoyed playing the thing since Mario Galaxy came out. (please don't list other games on the platform).

so why should I keep it? If I'm not digging it, out it goes. I don't see enough interesting games on it for the next 6 -12 months.

It's not like the Wii is the only console I own.

Uh, so go ahead and sell it. I'm sure someone will buy it from you in a heartbeat.

Honestly, what are you expecting people here to say? "Oh, please don't sell it! If you sell, EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD WILL SELL THEIR WIIS AND I WON'T FEEL COOL ANYMORE"?

Wow that was a poor conferenece, at least from my standpoint. I'm more of a Nintendo fan but I gotta say MS had them with thier shitty conference.

-Wii Music looked really mediocre and doesn't seem to have evolved much in two years, suprisingly for Nintendo casual game.
-AC: City Folk isn't really for me but my sister will love it, so I'm mildly pleased about that.
-Wii Speak I just don't get, how does it not pick up the TV's sound?
-No DS games from Nintendo...
-No Wii "hardcore" (or at least hardcore-ish) titles from Nintendo.
-I did like Wii Sports Resort, somewhat. The Motion Plus thing seemed to genuinely work, and it looked like a lot of fun, especially swords and waverace.
-Nothing to deal with the small fridge space.
-The rest was boring.

botticus said:
Nope, it looks quite nice. Now someone needs to do a swordfighting game. Maybe a good Red Steel 2.

And WiiSpeak only costs $30, so there's probably not going to be a hard drive included with it.
Wiispeak so what is that just hardware for Animal Crossing or is software included? If Motion plus is the real deal then why is everyone so mad? The potential for great game applications is still there even if Zelda wasn't shown. N-fans go through this withdrawal schtick every year it seems. :lol

DSI
?

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but Call of Duty on the Wii actually looked very nice graphically. And it seemed to control well to.
That may be so, but this is basically Call of Duty 3 redux. It's not an Infinity Ward game and it will still look MUCH better on the other platforms while offering superior multiplayer.

How the hell can Reggie call Animal Crossing hardcore? AC is the definition of a casual game. Then he brings up GTA for DS? What the heck happened to Nintendo?

Reggie is a joke.
Miyamoto is a dead beat.
The lady with the hurt wrist is Nintendo's annoying jester.
Nintendo has no clue what games are about anymore.
WiiMusic isn't even a game. It's not even a non-game.

Over-reaction confirmed.

Muppet, is that you?

Well, another conference at bat and Nintendo will appeal to mainstream success. I would love to have seen a New Super Mario Bros 2, but I guess this wasn't the place to be. I was hoping for at least one first-party Wii Ware game. Just one.

Nintendo doesn't need to operate around the industry anymore. To suggest that Nintendo needs to "use" E3 for media exposure when they get access to daytime talk shows, news programs, enormous billboards in Times Square, the blogosphere, etc., is like some kind of rationalizing yourself out of the picture. There's no reason to believe they couldn't have taken 5 minutes out of the conference to show Pikmin 3 (which I believe exists).

Campster said:
Wow. You have quite the sense of entitlement.

You don't "own" the medium, and throwing a hissy fit about the fact that this it's opening up is just sad. Games as a medium aren't leaving you behind, they're keeping you satiated while expanding their horizons to people who don't necessarily want to do nothing but shoot, kill, and level up. Millions are still being poured into the creation of hardcore games, and they're not going anywhere. Now there's certainly something to be said about the Wii not being quite what you're looking for if you're into hardcore games, but that's like being upset that the kids' section at your local library doesn't have the 600 page epics you desire. And it certainly wouldn't warrant screaming about how kids' sections are ruining the medium of books.

This isnt a new market or genre of gaming, the PARADIGM has shifted.

In 10 years we wont see anymore Ninja Gaiden, Halo, or Final Fantasy. The titles we currently enjoy will be put on gaming development's financial back-burner and fade into niche obscurity like fighting games, top-down shooters and PC-adventure of the past decade.

Nintendo has made too much money on the type of stuff they showed today. Why should they spend money on hardcore audiences?

We would probably complain if they showed a new Zelda with 1:1 swordplay, HD graphics, and a 60-hour storyline.

But I do own a Wii, and the reason I own it came out. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime III. They were totally rad. And I had a few bonuses along the way Super Paper Mario, Endless Ocean and Boom Blox.

But if this is the future, I see no reason for us to NOT react exactly like this. Since this is a message board for hardcore gamers, and most of us who aren't hypocrites don't have a tolerance for such bullshit.

You list several good games for the Wii that you enjoyed. Nintendo has a shitty conference with a casual focus, and now everybody is SO SURE that they will never produce games like those you enjoyed ever again that they are selling their system. Doesn't that seem like overreaction?

I agree that the conference was terrible. But I absolutely believe that there will still be a few good "hardcore" games in the system's future.

I just hate to see the stupidity of people selling systems because there's "nothing coming out" and then grudgingly rebuying them when the occasional good game hits. People did this shit constantly with the GC and I guess the cycle will continue. I realize with the Wii that you are not necessarily losing money doing this, but the shortsightedness behind it astounds me. I can't imaging not owning all three systems as a "hardcore", personally. When the good games DO come out I want to be there.

However, if you are a gamer and all you own is a Wii, then by all means sell it and get something else with the proceeds, then pick the Wii up later in life for the things you missed.

No one cares about the casual stuff MS announced, though.

And who cares who 'wins' e3 anyway? This conference isn't going to change perceptions or the console world pecking order.

NINTENDO AGAIN REDEFINES GAME CONTROL WITH WII DILDO.

Nintendo Unveils Wii Dildo.

LOS ANGELES, July 15, 2008 At the E3 Media & Business Summit today, Nintendo unveiled an enhancement for its iconic Wii Remote controller and a new game that promises to further enrich and engage players around the world. This offering build's on Nintendo's ongoing efforts to remove the barriers between human and anal crevices, an approach that has been instrumental in creating a paradigm shift for the industry since the advent of the Bi-sexuality and Homesexuality (not that there's anything wrong with that?).

Wii Dildo is not just a simple Toy. It is the first title to make use of another Nintendo advance, the Wii BlackMamba accessory, which plugs into the base of the Wii Remote controller to provide an incredibly realistic motion experience (I didn't even have to edit that last part, it spoke for itself). Scheduled for release in Winter 2008, Wii Dildo includes new game experiences such as the 69 Shuffle, Power Pecker and Upward Dog, along with the new Wii BlackMamba accessory and Wii BlackMamba Condom at no additional cost.
This is the ultimate way for "hardcore" Nintendo gamer's to go fuck themselves!

The is most definitely a multitude of internal Nintendo development teams that we aren't quite sure what they're working on.

NST
EAD Kyoto (Zelda team)
EAD Tokyo
Intelligent Systems
Retro
Monolith
and most likely another game from EAD Kyoto

These are all dev teams who are known for making core friendly games, many of whom have been quiet for a long time.

It's obvious that Nintendo is now using E3 to reach out to the mainstream media and court 3rd party publishers. As such, this is my thinking behind why Nintendo is no longer focused on promoting its core software at E3. They are performing so well financially it would be a waste of time for them to pimp their own core software at E3. In addition Wii currently has a dearth of quality 3rd party software and it seems to me one of Nintendo's main priorities was to work on this problem.

I'm just as disappointed as the rest of you that Nintendo didn't showcase any of their upcoming core lineup, however I suspect there will be a time and place for that. Nintendo now uses e3 as a conduit to talk to the mainstream media and 3rd party publsihers it's not the end of the world many of you are making it out to be.

Im sorry but this was one of the most boring events ever. At least Sonys 2006 provided some laugther.

But yeah, Nintendo does not have anything for me.. well well

WiiSpeak is just a mic that will be supported by Animal Crossing. It's USB.

I'm disappointed that Wii Sports 2 was the only demo of 1:1 control, but everyone else is just going overboard one way or the other to argue on the internet.

I think it's a mistake in the long term to abandon the hardcore gamers like us completely.

Let's see if the casuals are lining up when they launch their next console, because nobody of us will be there anymore.

I just want Nintendo to actually try another truly original IP aimed at those who loved games such as Zelda or Metroid. They have plenty of money and success now. Such a title would be truly fantastic.

"Hardcore" gaming lost today.

:(

Oh please, Wii Fit posed more of a thread (if any) to hardcores than Wii Music does. At least Wii Music looks fun.

i hope ign voice chat gets reggie in there so they can rail him with questions like, where the fuck are the games and where can users mail their wii's for a full refund.

I feel like I've been spat in the face. Microsoft, although it spent far too much time on absolute bollocks, are at least trying to keep the hardcore happy. Nintendo said at the start of the conference that they released Mario Metroid and Zelda towards the front end of the product cycle to reassure gamers.

I'm not feeling very assured.

No new core titles for DS, no new core titles for Wii. No storage solution. Nothing.

Um... why, exactly? What evidence do you have to support this? Game sales have done nothing but go up lately - and that includes both casual and hardcore games. There's no indication that hardcore games are fading; no signs that the market's interest in these titles is dwindling. Is it really so hard to believe that Nintendo have managed to capture a new audience without totally obliterating the old one?

Seems to have been the usual Nintendo conference (only read some live commentary). I'm not surprised that people are disappointed. I remember that they even were a little when Super Mario Galaxy (!!!) was shown. So two new hardware devices, one of which is awesome, and two Wii brand games. Not too bad, but they're still too slow with developing new software and hardware and getting it out. They have to do something with the ton of cash they currently have or they will overrun by billion dollar companies like MS with their endless cash sooner or later.

You're wrong and this kind of hand-wringing and whining is silly. As long as there are people willing to buy Halo and Final Fantasy et al they will continue to be made.

Very disappointing Wii 1st party lineup for core gamers for the next half year if that's all they're going to announce... I was expecting Fatal Frame coming over at the very least. I'll wait for some Wii Music hands-on before I decide on that.

DS at least is getting a GTA game.

No media dump on the press site with a ton of unannounced stuff like last year. Hopefully we get something else later in the week or it'll be a huge disappointment.

On the plus side, Animal Crossing did look really nice and the Call of Duty Wii version looked pretty good, actually. Good to see the Wii Speak mic(although there should be issues with hearing everyone's game audio). Wii Sports Resort will definitely be neat... sword game looks awesome.

This is one of the most absurd things I have ever read on Gaf. And that is saying a lot.

Whats sad is people still holding onto the belief that E3 is some hardcore game show anymore. Its a Shrunk down Media Event now. That should be pretty fucking clear by now with how much time Microsoft bullshited about Casual games and fucking netflix the ultimate Nothing game related annoucement.

Even gerstmann and crew said it last night on their podcast. The real game show is not E3 now they are the ones later in the year.

Nintendo clearly is withholding its non casual stuff since they didnt even speak of stuff we know about

I hoped for that for years, but it seems like they are content to just pump out another Mario and another Zelda in 2009-10 to satiate Nintenfans and have no real interest in any new core gamer IPs.

Come on, you know new Marios and Zeldas and Pikmins are coming. What's the big fucking deal? It's perfectly reasonable to declare Nintendo's E3 press conference a massive failure, but to proclaim that Nintendo is dead and you're selling your Wii would be denying the existence of these games. Just because they weren't shown here doesn't mean they aren't coming.

E3 has changed dramatically from what it was. The mainstream press is taking notice of it now, Nintendo is simply showing them what they want to see. I'm just think there's no reason to be so deliriously furious.
