E3 2011 Sony Conference Thread [Over]

the Vita news (and Ken Levine) made the show awesome... but it ended really flat.

No Journey?
No Last Guardian (yeah yeah, TGS... :/)
No Square-Enix?

Really surprising, actually.
Sony's stocked up for the next 12 months... but why not throw us some kind of unannounced 2012 bone?

To me The Last Guardian sound like it's in serious development hell, they even decided to release ICo+SOTC HD now and not waiting for it.

I just think there is a really huge chance it will get cancelled anytime now (or porting to PS4).

lotta big games missing i wanted to see and no major surprises. love everything i heard about the Vita, but i was definitely looking for a few secret megatons.

Neither of them announced anything of relevance for their consoles. Closest thing to excitement was Halo 4...then they said Holiday 2012 (which is kinda sad, MS is usually the one company that doesn't announce things too far in advance).

meh halo4 is rumoured to be a next next Gen title...were we watching the same conference...don't know how its possible ps3 stuff wasn't revalent?

I think Sony should have saved Starhawk for E3 and replaced it for that god awful Medieval game. Would have made the conference much more impactful for us PS3 owners. Only thing they announced that got me amped was Sly 4.

If you're a handheld person, Sony's conf cleared house. Really good stuff.

If sales keep as they are, Microsoft will take Sony "killing" them at every E3. They are sipping on that sweet blue ocean champagne now.

don't keep track of sales just talking games here....it seems so obvious comparing the lineup...?

...yeeeeeeaaaahhhh, you kinda lost me there, champ.

Hahahahaha, damn. Nice work!

I think Sony did an alright job. I didn't see anything announced that really blew me away, but maybe it's because we pretty much knew about everything.

Only thing that surprised me was the price range on the new handheld. It will make Nintendo have to drop the price on the 3DS, which is only a good thing.

After watching both prez i'm reminded (bare with me) of the movie, Megamind.

"PRESENTATION!!!!!!"

Sony Wins E3 so far.
Nintendos will be interesting though with the New console.

wtf.....you really think sony is gonna cancel TLG? how the fuck do you come to that conclusion?

Seriously. The only thing Ico/SoTC coming out "early" means is that TLG development is running long (duh) and they probably need a little cash flow to keep things going smoothly. That's my take anyway.

Decent E3. Not as good as previous years, but Uncharted 3 and Vita puts it a notch above MS's for sure. Surprising lack of new PS3 1st party titles. Either they wanted to focus more on Vita, they could possibly just be spreading out announcements through the rest of the year (gamescom and TGS), or they may be gearing up the next console cycle sooner than I thought
please no
. My stance on Move still hasn't changed. 1st party line-up still looks weak, but it's nice to see that 3rd parties are supporting it. They really need to get some advertising dollars behind it. Price announcement sold me on Vita for sure (AT&T lol), but where was the western 3rd party support?

Final Grades: MS: C- Sony: B (B+ with Vita @ $250)

It's Nintendo's show to lose and I think they'll win it again this year.

I don't get this "Sony wins E3" talk. Did nobody watch EA's presentation? As somebody who plays games with zero interest in waggle, they had the shit I wanted to play.

None of the conferences outside the big 3 really matter when it comes to talking about "winning" E3.

Won't happen. SCEJ pretty much gives Ueda and Kazunori Yamauchi (not sure if that will still be the case after GT5) free reign. It'll be done when it's done.

My ratings:

Presentation:
Microsoft: A (slick, fast, no awkward pauses, only one tiny technical problem, the controller disconnect)
Sony: C (too much boring talk, heavy breathing, mike issues)

Content:
Microsoft: D- (FPS, FPS, FPS, Kinect, kinect, FPS kinect_) No hardware talk, no price drops.
Sony: C (FPS, FPS, Move, Move, FPS.....but had Sly and that RPG thing at least) No hardware details about Vita.

Megatons:
Microsoft: F (Nothing)
Sony: A- (Vita price)

Overall:
Microsoft: C-
Sony: C+

As long as Nintendo doesnt show 4 FPS with space marines, they're going to win the game content IMO. Well, unless the show is 50% Vitality, 50% wii music 2. Their presentation is usually bad though. the japanese/english always slows things down.

Halo 4?

Both Microsoft's and Sony's conferences have been let downs imo, I think Nintendo will easily "win" this E3 by default because of Cafe.

- Nothing really new announced for PS3 aside from some exclusive content in multiplat games. We knew about Sly 4 last year, we knew about Starhawk already, we've already seen gameplay demos of Uncharted and R3, Infamous 2 comes out tomorrow, etc. Sony usually has some new games to announce but this time nothing.
- Sony failed to demonstrate why people should buy a Move. That Medieval Moves game looked like shit.
- No PS3 XMB improvements (cross game chat?) aside from Cinema Now service
- Some weird absences. Where was Agent, Last Guardian, etc?
- The Vita announcements were good though, $250 is a nice price and the games looked solid.

Wasn't an awful E3 but kind of underwhelming.

Micrsoft beat Sony this year on presentation period. After seeing all of the criticism from what was shown by Microsoft it is hilarious to see the backtracking when Sony clearly was not on their 'A' game at all.

The truth is it was almost as if they put the show together at the very last minute. The whole time your sitting their in belief that there is some sort of Nuclear Bomb around the corner and it never came.

I actually dug the 3DTV tech and who can hate on the Vita pricing (unless you count the AT & T data plan that you may have to get)

You can't blame Jack, he started well, but as the show continued to drag on you could tell there was a bunch of 'courtesy' clapping in the place of genuine excitement.

First off you BETTER have a brilliant line-up if Uncharted 3 is the lead-off. But, what is worse is how the Naughty Gods couldn't have picked a more exciting teaser demo. You'd be blind to not salivate over the water, but other than that it didn't ring of the excitement like the train sequence from UC2 or even the evasion of the Truck from the past E3.

That aside Sony would have destroyed E3 with a Last guardian appearance, an encore Kevin Butler appearance was desperately needed. No Twisted Metal? No Sorcery? Agent is confirmed to still be in development. Couldn't Rockstar have thrown a teaser bone out? How about at least showing the latest Shadow/ Ico trailer or MGS collection. And I would have rubbed Journey in everybody's faces. Finally why didn't we get the usual specs associated with Vita's official public reveal?

I don't care if the Halo haters try to devalue the Halo 4 announcement, it was huge that it is being released next holiday. Boy couldn't Sony have benefited from a God of War 4 announcent teaser to conclude the show.

Either way, Nintendo has a huge chance to walk away stealing the show.

Frankly I found MS "slick" presentation style full of cheese and corn...Sony's conference was more amateurish perhaps, but all the better for it...True the Move games did not look hot, but MS put FAR more emphasis on Kinect, and nothing for it looked good...well except sesame street for the kids

I believe there is a little Jeremy inside each and every one of us
JEREMY IS CREDIT TO TEAM!
"Woah uh oh, a Brute. What are we going to do about this guy? This guy is A LOT tougher than the grunts we've come up to before."

*Single sword slice*

"Great job Jeremy."

I disliked the conference. At least Microsoft's debacle was entertaining. I feel like there was about 10 minutes of interesting content and 50 minutes of crap I don't care about. The apology talk was a drag, and the montages and unbearable circle-jerkage got old fast. The PS3 showings were decent, it was nice to see Sly 4 and Uncharted 3 was fun (but underwhelming compared to the UC2 showing), but there were no surprise announcements or new IP's for PS3.

The Move showings felt like a waste of time. I was hoping to see some interesting games built for it, but there wasn't much in the way of that. I can't even remember the name of that Move game they demoed, it's that unremarkable. Like most motion only games, it looked more like a glorified tech demo than a real, full price game. I was hoping we were past that, but I guess not. The announcement of more Move-supported titles was good, but most of the time I'd rather stick with the pad.

No opinion on Vita since I'm not really interested in it. I had zoned out by then anyways.

Overall, the conference had no impact on me. I'm not excited or disappointed, just apathetic. Hopefully Nintendo can redeem E3 with their showing tomorrow.

had a snack and some time to reflect on the show.

While Sony had alot of good stuff I think the show was pretty forgettable.

I dont mean it was bad I just think it lacked something special.

I feel next week all I will remember was that Uncharted looked great... Vita is 249 and The insomniac guy with the pink controller.

They really needed a "oh and one more thing" at the end as well.

And when ken levine showed up I wasn't surprised like I was with Gabe which I think was the goal. I was more "oh.... hey its the bioshock guy. thats cool".

The best I can say about the show is that nothing rubbed me the wrong way but I liked last years show more.

Also I am starting to notice that Sony ALWAYS has the best e3 stage. There stages has put MS and Nintendo to shame the last few years.

so far e3 feels like a concert. We had the shit local band opening with a bunch of crap songs aimed at tween girls and covers of stuff I heard before .... now we just watched a pretty good act with a few hits but they are still not "there" yet .... Now its time for the Headliner.

Sounds lame, maybe, but Vita with trophies is seriously the biggest selling point for me. I don't know why. I'm not a trophy whore, but they add a lot of value for me.

Really wanted a new Syphlon Filter or some Last Guardian footage. :( Sony didn't have nearly as strong of a finish as last year. Perhaps last year's press conference surprise is just too good to beat. Jaffe was denying he was going to e3 for months ahead of time. I'm pretty sure nobody figured he would show up for how vigorously he denied going.

I have to wonder though, how much are games going to cost if Sony intends to make their money back on software? I mean, they have to be taking a 30-35% hit on the Vita alone.

They did not show the train sequence nor did they show the evasion of the truck at E3, they showed the balcony sequence in E3 09 and the ship sequence in U3 is definitely a better level to show, I think the water aside the physics and the fact that the boat actually tipped over was pretty fucking impressive, they could probably show an even more exciting level but then people will just whine and bitch about being shown everything.

SOTC/ICO and MGS collection are basically remakes, definitely shouldn't have made it into the E3 press conference. Could have shown Journey/Sorcery/Twisted Metal but they only have 2 hours Twisted Metal is already a known quantity, same as the other two. Maybe they're saving Last Guardian for TGS.

Vita pricing was the big win for Sony.

I'm amazed by some peoples reactions to the Sony conference. I thought it was largely abysmal and redeemed mainly by the $249 price point of the Vita. Sure it was better than Microsoft's conference but that isn't saying much. I mean, "best conference ever"? Really?

I expect Nintendo to absolutely dominate this E3. They barely have to try at this point.

I dont keep up on sales-age crap but is MS really killing Sony that bad? Worldwide?

so why didn't Sony talk about the hardware specs of the Vita? I think everyone left so impressed with the thing and its price that no1 cares if it's 1 GB or 512 MB of RAM lol

claviertekky said:
That's one expensive monitor just for 3D though.
Actually it's not that bad. The street price for comparable monitors is around $350 or so (this is MSRP, so there could be some discounting), but those are sans glasses. This includes a set of (universal) 3D glasses, and a game ... so it's not really that bad IMO.

Wag said:
There already are a few 24" 3D PC displays <$500 so Sony is not alone in that dept (and yes, they have HDMI ports).
With glasses and a game? Certainly they aren't alone in this segment by any means, but I wouldn't consider it overpriced.

Famous last words I think haha.

Personally, they will have to do alot to impress me more than the Vita...like show an HD zelda

Shu need to do something about this.

i wonder how big the boxes are gonna be. software is gonna be distributed on what are essentially usb sticks aren't they? or something like that

Added the sizzle reels.

The PS3 Sizzle Reel has a Machinarium clip though (for half a sec) if anyone is interested.

By your junior member status, I guess you're new here. It's the same story every single year here, where there's always been a far more overly-excitable fanbase for Sony than MS: Sony's conference was the best! MS' was the worst! The tides are turning! MS will exit the video game business while Sony will rise to heaven! Every. Year.

Sony had a pretty solid B+ going for me until they wasted 5 minutes of the conference talking about Infamous 2.. seriously wtf?
that was the biggest head scratcher for me too. guess they really want to push it. can't have hurt giving it some attention the day before release when millions are watching...

but then again, that's not what the millions were watching the conference for.
