E3 Impressions

Shikamaru Ninja

任天堂 の 忍者
Here is a quick summary of some of the games I got a chance to check out last week.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I had to wait online for an hour to play this game. Nintendo did a really nice job of placing the kiosk inside a Zelda themed booth with some really cool surprises. As for the game itself, it is absolutely fantastic. The last two trailers were cool, but this trailer really showed Nintendo pushing a new envelope of gameplay for the series. The horseback action is absolutely incredible, the control is flawless and the jousting scene is really badass. One thing that I really want to mention is how amazing the soundtrack is. I heard about 5 different songs, (not including the cool theme that played during the GDC trailer) and 3 of them are really f**** epic. The other two are simpler tunes but catchy. The graphics are top notch. I was afraid that this game would not be able to compete with Resident Evil 4, I am glad I was proven wrong.

Starcraft: Ghost. Swinging Ape and Blizzard pulled out what might be one of my favorite three games of E3. Starcraft:Ghost is absolutely a game to look out for. I was glad to see the epic Starcraft storyline return in the form of a really badass intro CG that leads me to believe the storyline will be just as good and well presented as the two RTS previously released. The action is pretty much a mix between Splinter Cell and Resident Evil 4. One thing I really have to mention is the amazing multiplayer mode. I must have played it around 6 different times (had to wait online each time). The multiplayer mode available was capture the base over lan featuring 4 members on red team, and 4 members on blue team. It is basically a extremely polished third peson take on HALO with the ability to be a ghost, marine, firebat, and light armored marine. You can also mount several different vehicle and pull a lot of sneaky stealth moves like dropping down from vents and choking your opponent.

Metroid Prime Hunters. Haters STFU on NST. This game was one of my favorite games at E3. The multiplayer mode is absolutely fantastic and one of the best and most refreshing experiences in a very long time. NST has now done what Retro should have done with Prime 2, that is add different characters with different abilities. I really hope Nintendo makes this WiFi.

Animal Crossing DS. WTF! I had no idea what I was doing in this game. The demo was pretty horrendous, because most people did not know what the f to do. Several members of the EAD - Animal Crossing team were stationed around the kiosk. Hisashi Nogami and Tomaki Kuroume I recognized.

Final Fight Revenge. When I first saw the trailer for this game, i instantly thought i had first class tickets to a train wreck. How wrong I was because this game is freakin cool. I spoke to the producer and gave him a thumbs up from EAD. What makes the game cool is the use of cool scenarios, many which seem to be inspired from Fight Club. The main backbone of the quality really relied on the solid fighting engine production studio 8 put into this game. Cody is in the game! Too bad, I didn't see a multiplayer mode.

Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. I played it for a bit. It seems like the camera has gone back to the Castlevania 64 style instead of LoI. I thought the game was ok, if anything it seemed more exciting than LoI. The character design and music was cool. Minibosses were cool too.

LA Rush. I am a big fan of the Rush series and I wasn't convinced by this sequel. I think the shortcuts were way overdone. Perhaps it was just that one track.

Matrix: The Path of Neo. FREAKIN Awesome. Played the lobby scene and Japanese Winter. The lobby scene is awesome, unfortunately the PS2 rev was struggling with the framerate on that level. This game is as cool as the movies, lots of style, I hope it turns out really polished.

Geist: It was ok. The storyline and cinemas are pretty cool. I have to admit the game is rather artistic, a lot of brain candy here. However, the action scenes are missing something. The framerate wasn't rock solid, and the gun play felt off. When I fired my gun it did not feel like i was shooting bullets.

Mario Baseball: Nice graphics! However, the fielding felt so akward.

Snowboard Kids DS: WHAT THE F*** DID THEY DO TO SNOWBOARD KIDS. They took out the cool character designs, and now i find out there are no longer skiflifts in the game. The track I played was a one lap downhill ride. ATLUS AND RACDYM, there is still time to bring back the skilift, and please give us classic SBK music and characters.

Gauntlet: Seemed like Gauntlet: Dark Legacy. I loved Dark Legacy but I thought they were going to try something radically new. The only difference I found were the implementation.

Mario Party 7. I almost threw up. Who is responsible for this? Part 7??? WTF WTF WTF WTF

Super Mario Brothers DS. Really awesome. Two player racers were great :)

Awesome. One of my most wanted games. Long time till release, though.

Nice impressions, I'm particularly watching as Final Fight (the Cody-oriented storyline is a nice hook to start even if it looks rough right now), the Castlevania game, and Starcraft:Ghost (being reminiscent of Metal Arms is a good thing) get closer and details are fleshed out.

No Okami and Wanda ;(
Okami is pretty damn cool. The gameplay is smooth and the graphical style is amazing.

Wanda was "meh" after playing Zelda. I know it's still in development, but it seemed the frame-rate was pretty low, and most of the enviornments seemed cold and unalive. Maybe the story will be the saving grace of this game, but from a gameplay/graphical standpoint I felt severely unerwhelmed (and I was pumped before I got to play it).

cool

what are your impressions of animal crossing DS? if you have any.

Is Matrix: The path of Neo coming to xbox\pc\cube? Maybe it will have a better framerate in the other versions. I can't believe I'm actually interested in this. :|
It's funny, because what you said about Geist is apparent even in the pics and videos of the game. Something is off. Nintendo should delay the game to october-november and help develop the game.
