EA executive producer Glen Schofield says that Cliff Bleszinski told him Dead Space "looks great" on the Unreal Engine. One problem, the game uses EA's own graphical engine. It's one highlight in a very revealing video interview that Planet Xbox 360 had with Schofield at EA's Redwood Shores location about Dead Space.

The entire video (.mpg) is on Planet Xbox 360's site. Camera work's a little shaky, but all you need is the audio. Schofield, with little prompting, talks very candidly about the game's design, how it compares with other familiar titles, and how it all came to be.

Schofield himself visited with horror directors Wes Craven and Eli Roth, and writer Warren Ellis, to inform EA's perspective on horror and how it will translate into the gameplay. Craven had a "really deep philosophy" about horror, getting downright creepy because it involves a family aspect. Roth "was little more about torture porn than the horror," Schofield says with a laugh.

But what really gets my hopes up about this game is when he talks about the reason it exists: "We wanted to make a game for us," he said. A game the small-but-passionate dev team wanted to play itself. Every gamer wishes he or she had that kind of creative outlet, and the resources to fill it, and if we had that kind of access we wouldn't waste it. And in the pitch meeting, when EA's business side "saw the numbers Resident Evil 4, it was a fairly easy business case." It sounds like they're getting all the support they need to make a winner.

Other fun details: Schofield thinks Dead Space would make a good movie, but acknowledges you can't make it on a $10 million budget like you can a game. He's also talked licensing for tie-in products, like action figures and, perhaps facetiously, a candy bar that crunches like a bone and drips cherry filling like blood.

Also, Schofield has a huge set of guns. That is all
.

Im actually hyped for Dead Space.

Also Cliff Bleszinski :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol Im sorry but that was funny.

The game looks terrible to me. Luckily, I thought the same thing about BioShock before I played the demo, and that ended up being amazing. Still, I don't see what the hype is all about. It looks kinda lame/boring.

The fact that Warren Ellis was consulted on this game just adds to the overall appeal. I mean Dead Space looks fantastic, it looks creepy, I love the atmosphere, the environment, the aesthetics and everything but that's like the cherry on top of the whipping cream right there.

He probably mixed up Dead Space and Dark Void like everyone else.

Have these people seen these games?

Dead Space = RE4 in space, which looks awesome.

Dark Void = Gears with a jetpack, whicht looks awesome.

Both games look like they are going to be great.

Some people like colorful games. Lack of of color obviously doesn't bother you- hell, your avatar is brown/grey.:lol

Just to Bitch.

I have no problem with the game. It's not something I'd buy though.

so why comment on it? Gotta agree with dai here, nothing looks 'wrong' with the style, its like people going into a viva pinata thread bashing its TEH COLORS OMG NOT MANLY style.

My comment was primarily directed at the whole Unreal engine thing.

Dude, F'n chill out, no need to be attacking anyone in here, this is a freaking videogame message board for crying out loud. :lol

Back to subject, this game looks very neat

:lol

i simply related the lack of colors to your typical UE3 game. which is why one would probably easily confuse the engine behind dead space to be UE3.

and then when the OP stated that everyone seemed to hate the game based on the comments so far so i said that i was interested in the game, but would prefer less brown.

seriously what the hell is wrong with some of you?

Just watched 5 minutes of gameplay and I am not impressed in the slightest. Knowing that they were going after the same feel as RE4 makes it even more mediocre looking. What's fun about shooting the same monsters over and over with some sort of plasma cutter or whatever? If this is the game they want to play then I can't say I agree with their tastes. It's just another monster killer.

Can you name a survival horror game that isn't brown/gray dominant? I can see this argument in some genres, but survival horror has been this way for pretty much forever.

He has a point though, it's set in a sci-fi environment aboard a space ship. It's not really the settings for a vibrant game. We've seen some colourful games use UE3 though, Bioshock was plenty colourful.

I think the 'typical' part of UE3 lacking colour is because it's used in action games which tend to be a more 'gritty' affair.

Uh, the Bioshock comparisons.

Bububu they're both... uh... dark! And uh... have guys in armor!

If you're going to troll at least put some effort into it. Call it a RE4 clone, make fun of the "renegade team", talk about how EA hasn't made anything decent in the last 5 years, or how the soundtrack will be the scariest EA TRAX.

But the Bioshock comparison? Just lazy. Lazy trolling.

I think it was just a stealth troll by Cliff.

Dead Space is going to be this years uncharted, but without the fanboys claiming it is something it isn't.

You mean claiming its a good game that was completely underrated by everyone?

who said anything about wanting a super colorful vibrant game? i simply (emphasis on simply folks!) said i'd prefer less brown. i'd didn't suggest that i wanted the game to be some color fest like viva pinata.

and yes i know we've seen colorful UE3 games. i'm playing one right now (lost odyssey).

that's right. which is why i don't think it's a stretch for anyone to see a vid of dead space and think "this has got to be a UE3 game".
