No! NO! NO! NO!
If they do that, I'll have to physically take action. When the most creativally bankrupt company starts investing in companies like that, it won't end good. Expect a Katamari Damacy sequel under EA? Maybe, multi-console with punk rock included. :-(
Not to mention that would be raping Dante, Mega Man, Jack Slate, Pac-Man, Joe, Captain Blue, Ryu, Ken, Dig Dug, Mr. Driller, Morrigan, Mitsurugi, Sophitia, Devil Kazuya and Geoff ( :lol Penny Arcade!) in one fell swoop.

Goddamn my avatar becomes more true every day.

They just aren't going to stop. EA is like that game Blast Corps. It will just keep going on it's methodical and maniac path until it (the industry) crashes. No one can stand up against them now. They wield more control over your console than you do.

A link would be welcome.
The orginal story was in the Wall Street Journal.
But here is another link to the story

Other companies that could be in play -- either as acquirers or takeover targets -- include game publishers such as Activision Inc., THQ Inc., Midway Games Inc., the UK's Eidos Plc and Japan's Namco Ltd. and Capcom Co. Ltd., according to the Journal.

it begins....

See, I don't mind other mergers. EA just rapes a company dead and acts like they were responsible for creating Sim City, James Bond and the RTS genre.
I think the rest of the American developers should merge and call themselves EA-SUCKS and make it some clever acronym.

I love it.. EA invests in Ubi... does no more and people panic. Articles point out EA is interested in investing in other companies... people panic.

Has EA even issued an official statement about the Ubi investment or are they letting folks stew?

It'll be fine since America has a government that doesn't go easy on trusts or prospective monopolies. EA's underhanded dismantling of the videogame market won't go unchecked for long...

...ah, one can dream.

Yes, because people know what eventually happens to most companies EA gains control over. Their sense of panic is justified.

Seriously, how can anyone be surprised by this?
EA is expanding its portfolio and they seriously lack some "japanese oriented" games. That, combined with their great marketing, could be some kind of boost for japanese-influenced games..

I do understand the concerns though.. EA is the "mini" microsoft of the biz ;)

I HATE EA. I HATE EA. I HATE EA. From now on anyone who promotes any of their games will be hated forever by me. I have an idea. If they buy anyone again and especially any of the good publishers like Namco and Capcom we should ban all their games from ever mentioned in this forum, this would be GAF's greatest contribution in the gaming industry. Btw did I mention that I HATE THEM?

Why people continue to defend EA is beyond me.

Cos they're stupid enough not to be able to understand how hurtful is EA for the gaming industry? I mean look at Microsoft. Yes they bought a couple of developers and yes it's kinda bad, but as far as we've seen Microsoft (who is supposed to be a bad guy) respects the developers and doesn't rape them like this abomination of a gaming company does. I've seen dozens of publishers buying developers but I've never ever seen this kind of aggressiveness and -after the buyout- disrespect. Anyone who still defends them doesn't give a shit about videogames and their future or is just plain stupid.

Don't forget about the inclusion of EA Trax in all these games.

I can't wait for Street Fighter Street 2006

Seriously, you fuckers just keep on buying up those EA games, it's all your fault...keep feeding the monster kids. Oh and to the magazine editors here, why don't you guys write up some good shit about this? AND QUIT SCORING EA GAMES HIGH! The mags are partly responsible for whipping the casuals up into a frenzy of buying the same damn sports games every fuckin year. It's a vicious circle that will culminate into the demise of the industry.

im not worried

either EA wont crash the industry or they will and we will return to garage devs and small teams making different interesting games, both are fine for me.

Hmm, now it makes sense in the Capcom focus group last year when they asked us what EA should do to make a killer fighting game better than Street Fighter

Garage devs and small teams that EA will eventually buy. There is no turning back if they manage this man. Videogames would certainly suck but that won't stop the retarded casuals from buying EA's crap. True gamers have become the minority nowadays. That's what happens when anything becomes mainstream. The brainless crowd takes control. That's why when others were celebrating a few years back about how popular the videogames are becoming I was getting depressed. EA is the casuals' child and it's growing up fast because of them.

Fine, but will you admit Microsoft IS hurtful for the PC industry, and has raped many a company? I think that history is what scares people in regards to Microsoft's console industry entrance. Microsoft wasn't the way they are now in the PC industry in the beginning. It was only after they had a certaon level of power/dominance. It only stands to reason that if given the chance, they would do the same thing in the video game industry.

Of course the difference is, Microsoft wouldn't be hurting games makers (well, not directly), just every other aspect of the industry. IMO, both companies suck.

Well this is good news. I'm glad EA is looking to invest in two of my favorite companies. I'm sure it will only help in the long run by providing additional leadership and resources that weren't available before. There is only wonderful splendid good that can come of this. Urbz meets Mega Man Exe? Yes! Oh I'm sold!

To tell you the truth as long as Microsoft doesn't hurt the industry I'm fine with them as far as videogames are concerned (PC industry is a totally different matter). EA is the real problem here. They should be stopped with any means necessary, and I'm serious when I say that if they continue like this GAF should do some serious boycotting at EA products (because EA sells products not games).
