Resident Evil Requiem - Creators' Message (Capcom Spotlight)

My point is people gotta stop pretending RE was scary with the protagonist being a weaksauce. We blasted through every monster from day 1 baby.
Fuck yeah, I knifed nemesis on hard mode in the original.

Ultimately, there comes a point in every horror game where the once scary enemies just become another obstacle. At that point if the combat mechanics aren't fine tuned and engaging, the game will fall flat.

This is why I went back for replays on RE2, 3, 4, but going back to do village again seems like an absolute chore.

I'd like them to wait until they can deliver something close to photo-realistic (including characters) if possible next gen.
I would hate that so much, one of the things I like about RE9 is they going for more stylize characters design rather than photo realistic crap.

Just because they don't look photo realistic as human beings doesn't mean that wasn't the devs intention.

Consider the following character. Can you elaborate in what ways this is going for a stylized representation of a person instead of just realistic?

If they did they would go with scan face like they did with DMC5.

I personally not big fan of that.

Why does every Leon "fan" mention RE2 and RE4 and completely ignore Leon is in RE6. That's 3 games. lmao.
Yeah we already have 3 game with Leon, it not all that exciting to play as him again.

Also Grace has connection forgotten RE Outbreak because of her which to me is very exciting.

I personally happy with this decision Capcom made.

There's always a risk of hitting somewhere in between. Where game is not really scary and not really action oriented.
That's the best balance since it's more like what the original Trilogy and RE1 Remake and RE2 Remake and even RE3 Remake were.

Like say it goes

Horror to action meter

Level 1 - Something like Alien Isolation
Level 2 - RE7 due to moving the slowest and less combat sections etc
Level 3 - RE1 to RE3 original trilogy/RE1 Remake/RE2 Remake
Level 4 - RE3 Remake
Level 5 - RE4/RE4 Remake
Level 6 - RE5/RE6
Level 7 - Space Marine 2

For Resident Evil level 3 to Level 4 are both easily the best balance.

It looks like RE9 could be anywhere from Level 2 to level 4 by the looks of it so far. So hoping it'll be more level 4 or level 3 rather than level 2. From the previews and dev talk, it'll most likely be either level 2 or level 3.

I totally get what you are saying. It only works if they execute well on both sides. Which was my point. Fingers crossed.

These new characters in RE games suck to be honest,

Not gonna lie, don't feel excited about Capcom games as of late

I thought Ethan was great to be honest because it went all the way back to basics adding tension with the scenario in 7. With how long the series has been going for you do need new blood to keep thijgs well because there's only so much you can do with legacy characters without risking it becoming stale.

I actually really like Grace both her design and her connection to past RE.

I love legacy characters but I also dont want keep playing as them which end up getting bored with them and eventually start hating them.

Ethan being a "nobody" didn't add tension. He gets his hand reattached with magic water almost immediately completely sucking the wind out of the opening. Capcom doesn't seriously care about that sort of thing anymore. As great as REmake 2 was, well Claire's game anyway, it's becoming pretty obvious that it's just a complete outlier in this current era of RE.

Problem with Leon is he is overused. Grace is a fresh face and will be great for a horror experience. Leon has already gone through Raccoon City, RE4, RE6, as well as several movies such as Degeneration, Damnation, Vendetta, miniseries Infinite Darkness and Death Island.

I prefer new characters to old ones in a Horror franchise. Use the same character and there is no horror element because they have "seen it all".

Exactly!

I will never understand why they made Ethan a faceless character. Like they were so opposed to feature him in a cutscene for whatever reason yet the guy had full on voice acting. Now you got Grace who is front and center for promoting RE9.

Do we know yet how camera options work? Is it a button while unpaused, a toggle in the pause menu or something that needs to be chosen when starting a new game?

It's currently an option in the menu according to those who were at the "behind closed doors" showing. We will see if they make it more easily accessible with a button press since people have brought it up as feedback.

I am just happy that first-person is back.

I think the best way forward is to keep providing both, because the two camps are just too divided 🙂

I finished all the 1st person REs, but I just don't want to play like that in the future. However, if there's an option for both - great, everyone happy. I just hope they do both modes justice and not treat them as an afterthought.

I have confidence that this one will have both moves playing and feeling well.

Options menu, for now.

I hope they're able to make it an in-game option like pressing R3 to change on the fly.

One thing Resident Evil has over Silent Hill is cute and/or hot ladies.

I think that's fair, seeing that the series started with being third-person games (actually are fixed camera angles third-person?). I think it should also stay, and I like the old RE games. It's just that I can get more out of the "horror part" of RE in first-person. And while RE is often on the lighter side w.r.t horror, I still want to feel uneasy while playing. And first-person helps me with that.

Not to mention, I don't want to see an elderly character with a boyband haircut, just because that's the only consistent characteristic of Leon throughout the franchise's history.

As does Grace's model. Way more detailed than anything in previous RE's.

And, yeah, I don't recall seeing any/many games that have done lighting showing through a character's hair like this before. It's pretty good.

Amazing the power of RE-Engine (Resident evil engine for me)

I hope you can switch perspectives on the fly. I imagine I'll be switching between them to try them out more than a few times. Would be annoying having to go to the menu everytime again.

seems to be a "great experience first time, horrible for replay value" type of game.
Well, isn't that pretty normal for these type of games? I haven't played a horror game twice since Resident Evil 2 in 1998. Havn't replayed many other games either, since there's always too many I want to play.

i replayed re4 remake 6 times. game has grreat unlocks and most of the levels are "play" levels instead of walking simulator. Its a very action packed focused game, thats why i like re4 the most

RE4 as fantastic game as "action game" and I like it very much but also not horror game.

I'm currently playing RE7 and sure I'm not the biggest fan of it first person view but I can safely say as survival horror I like it better than RE4.

That's exactly why re4 is one of my least favourite re games.

Because re6 is shit and Leon was only one campaign out of 4? That was hardly his game when he's sharing with 6 other protagonists.

How is that in any way equivalent to RE4? Couldn't pay me to boot up RE6 again.

I'll be honest I was hoping for something closer to RE4 remake but honestly I shouldn't have expected that quality. This is another neo RE like VII or Village. I'm okay with that, but it isn't the direction I would have preferred. RE sucks compared to Silent Hill for this kind of game(always has). However, RE kicks silent hill's ass in actual combat gameplay so I wish they would each stick to their niche.
Same. It's crazy to me how RE4make and RE2make (to a slightly lesser degree) nailed the formula so well and they haven't just decided to follow that. They're what I want from the series. Not RE 7/8, though I enjoyed them.

Yeah it's not even my top 5 RE game. RE4 Remake was better but still not within my top 5.

More RE games with the style and balance of RE2 Remake would be the best, even RE3 Remake. RE3 Remake's formula was actually still very solid and had a good balance, it's just the game was too small/short. Basically RE7 is a bit too slowish and RE4R/RE4 is a bit too actiony. Somewhere around RE2R or RE3R would be perfect.

For now I'm actually liking where RE9 is going, We are playing new character but she is not faceless like Ethen was and we have the option play in 3rd person view.

I'm currently very hype for it and hope to get a demo soon.

I dunno, Ill is far more impressive to me than what was shown of RE9. Thing is, i don't think that what was shown of Ill is actual gameplay.

Should see a lot more of this come August with Gamescom and after, it wont be too long. Capcom are pretty locked with how their promotional runs go staying pretty staying the same with a lot of their projects and routine.

People complain about the push towards photorealism but horror games are a genre that really benefits

This looks life a full generational leap over 4 remake, at the point 7 looks ugly in many parts. Mia's plastic hair always stuck out like a sore thumb.

It's on the official channel, but marked as hidden:

And yes, there's a very short (and partially blurred) snippet of the original open-world/online prototype as well.

Any new footage of RE9 in that vid?

I watched the video on the portal and found nothing that wasn't in the original video.

I think that the Silent Hill 2 Remake is the perfect level of horror to action and wish RE went back to that. I enjoyed SH2 more than the RE remakes and I was never a SH fan. I missed them back in the day.

If what was shown of iLL is real, RE9 has an insane bar to reach. I am also permanently reminded of MH WIlds and DD2, which were as disappointing as they come. It's still Capcom, though, so we shall see i guess.
