EA Trax and censorship

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
SSX :
Bloc Party :
"A heart of stone, a smoking gun, i can give you life, i can take it away" ... becomes :
"A heart of stone, <silence>, i can give you life, i can take it away"

Fifa
The Streets :
"See... i think you are about an 8 or a 9, maybe be even a 9 and a half in 4 beers time, that Top Shop crop top you are wearing is nice, a little too much fake tan by yeah you score high"
becomes :
"See... i think you are about an 8 or a 9, <silence>, that Top Shop crop top you are wearing is nice, a little too much fake tan by yeah you score high"

a) why?
b) ... why?
c) see point a and b
d) what the hell is going to happen in "The Godfather?" you shoot people with fairy cakes or something?

eh nothing really new

Play Tony Hawk 4 and Listein to "If you Must" by Del Tha Funkee Homosapien then play the real version, they mute like half the song on the tony hawk version.

well, at least custom soundtracks helps - but without ripping these to the UMD and replacing tracks this isn't going to happen easily.

I mean... is there really a point to this?

it's particularly funny in SSX

"OH SO HARDCORE RACING DOWN MOUNTAINS AND COOL IN YOUR FACE ATTITUDE BUT HEY NO LYRICS ABOUT GUNS! GUNS ARE BAD... AS ARE DRUGS! AND SEX IS BAD! GOVERNMENT APPROVED ROCK AND ROLL AND MUSICAL MESSAGES! WE ARE PARTYING NOW!"

I dunno - i guess we aren't going to see Potato Junkie showing up on a EA Trax infected PSP game anytime soon :)

"i'm bitter, I'm twisted, <siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilence>"

I don't get the smoking gun removal.. thats more figurative.

The beer refrence removal I can sorta understand, that may have something to do with the ESRB.

"I don't get the smoking gun removal.. thats more figurative."

indeed - surely if they wanted to be arsey the phrase "i can give you life, i can take it away" is MUCH more explicit than "a smoking gun"?

i know this is all minor, but i have a keen interest in this due to previous music industry ties and ... well... a growing obsession with the idiocy of recent censorship.

They took out the line "My nose bleeding badly" from Animal Alpha's "Bundy" in Burnout Revenge/Legends, too. It was replaced with "I've fallen badly." Being rewarded for blowing up random traffic is OK; having a bloody nose isn't!

Nothing beats Um Jammer Lammy's US censorship of lines about chopping down trees, though.

It probably has something to do with the ESRB. If you include things like that in the game it may bump it up to Teen, thus hurting sales. When it comes right down to it, it's not worth it for EA to keep the lines in the songs. Besides, they would censor lines like that on MTV too, and they're a friggin music TV station.

Also I heard a song in Burnout Revenge that was censored, but I can't recall it at the moment.

Im not sure, but it looks like America have too much censor?
You cant even say the word "F**K" on television without hearing a blip instead..

maybe the same with the games?

EA Traxx are from the Devil.

Translation: No, it isn't the same.

Cursing in US games isn't censored at all unless the content goes beyond the ESRB rating. In which case the game shouldn't have cursing in the first place. The only exception are game demos, simply because everyone (ie underaged) has access to them.

SSX4 soundtrack is pretty good actually. I found a at least 5 songs on it that I didn't even know about that I really like. Still, I had to disable about half of the songs to tailor the experience to my taste, but that's not bad considering there are still many songs left.

On PSP it's pretty easy to fix the games to have custom soundtrack anyways.

PSP version of this game is a bit weird though. It uses all the music and visual design from SSX4, but all the tracks seem to be from SSX3? I don't know if it's the same in console versions, I wonder why reviews didn't mention this?

I like one of the songs in Tony Hawk 3 that slipped by with the word fuck in it :lol

But yeah I know what you mean. Chronic Future's song in Burnout 3 censored 'pissed' for some reason. Every game should censor like GTA : SA.

The other day, I was trying to help a lady pick out a cheap racing game for her nephew, who is like 8 years old. Every game I would pick up was rated T and it was for "mild lyrics." She would have none of that. I finally found an E rated racing game after going through about 5 "cheap" titles. I hope her nephew is enjoying Group S Challenge!

MTV censors out references to guns now, (though im not sure in the case of that particular song if they would), so im not suprised to see EA do it. You know some uptight soccer mom somewhere would probably bitch about it anyway.

what's equally offensive to me is that in SSX PSP, before you can disable a track they make you listen to the entire thing.

is this something new with Trax?

Wow, thats like Torture you pay for

You just let the game music player play for an hour or two, sitting on your desk with the sound disabled. Then you chose which songs you want. It's not like it's a big deal.

Better than BUYING songs in SSX3, in my opinion.

yeah, i noticed that too - i was like "Oh, so not only do i hate this shit, i have to listen to it all the way through once before i can not listen to it?"

when you get old and cranky like me, you'll realise how annoying people wasting an hour or two of your life really is...

I don't understand the hatred for EATrax. Granted, the only EA games that I've played that had them were Burnout 3 and 4, but the tracks were pretty damn good. They were well suited for racing and for the most part, were pretty enjoyable. Tracks like Mudmen - Animal, Bravery - Honest Mistake, Billy Talent - Red Flag, Animal Alpha - Bundy are really good picks for a game like burnout. I especially like the fact that you don't have stupid local radio station playing these songs 30 times an hour like music you find in some other games/movies.

I've only glanced at the EATrax list for the latest NFSU game and they include some pretty good bands in there too. Oh wait, there was also EATrax (kinda) in SimCity4 and there's absolutely no way in hell anyone will convince me that the songs in SC4 were bad and didn't suit the game well. They were perfect.

I think its just people trying yet again to find stupid reasons to hate EA. It's really immature. I hate EA as much as the next guy for buying out some of my favorite companies (Criterion, Maxis, Westwood etc) but I'm not going to sit here and bash everything they do because of a grudge.

So why does everyone complain about EATrax? I don't see anyone bitching about Rockstar for their GTA music which is also licensed. If you want to bitch at shoddy music in a game, go knock on Ubisoft's door and punch out the person who thought putting Godsmack in a Prince of Persia game was a good idea.

Sole defender of EA Trax? So now I live in some bizarro universe where I'm the only one who really liked SSX soundtracks so far O_o ?

Besides, I don't know if you guys noticed the "Sound disabled" part in my quote? :P

Unless you do nothing but play games whole day, I don't see it being a big problem to leave the PSP somewhere playing songs for two hours when you can't even hear them.

I still stand by that most of the songs on that soundtrack are really good btw, it's just that some of them are not to my liking (the metal stuff). Not as good as SSX3 soundtrack but very nice nonetheless.

"So why does everyone complain about EATrax? I don't see anyone bitching about Rockstar for their GTA music which is also licensed."

GTA has a gazillion tracks catering to everyones taste. EATrax has predominantly "grrr angry attitude guitar hell" tracks and some techno - it's narrow in it's view. And it's a question of taste - the "i knoooooooow the woooooooooooooooords, i knooooow what your saaaaayin' etc etc SHAT YA FACCCYYSAA SHAT YA YA FACCCYSHA" track has to be the single worst track i've heard in years.

Plus it now seems we get the same EA trax appearing on multiple games. Arghh...

Custom sound tracks for the win - although the thought of having to play through licensed tracks before you can disable them looms like a massive great shadown (whilst i understand it - hey, as a band you want exposure! if no one ever hears your track in an EA game, whats the point?)

In one note, these guys decimate anything ever found on an EA Traxx.

IMO

Hell, Rockstar comes up with some better tunes in the GTA games, even counting the first :lol

The difference is that the GTA games have classic and/or cheesy music from the time period the game is based on. It usually helps the atmosphere of the game. But in the case of EA trax, the music they have is not everyones cup of tea. Every game that I own that has EA Trax, I have the music disabled. Regardless, licensed music in general sucks. Original music created for the game will always be better.
