Seeing Microsoft fumble this badly makes my inner fanboy smile.
You know, decisions like these really show that the Xbox name doesn't mean the same as what it did ten years ago.

We support CEC, but found it to be unreliable at launch for two reasons first, no consistency in how its marketed (there is no labeling to know if you have a CEC compatible set), and second, any break in the chain can break CEC (if you have a CEC TV, but not a CEC Amp, weve seen the chain break)
IR blasting testing is, honesty, much better than I expected. Its probably the most surprising aspect as I was doubtful it would be reliable. Ive been playing with it at home and it works amazingly well, and you can see where my Kinect is based on my TIVO.
For voice, were thinking more like Xbox, Go to Velocity, where we know that Velocity is channel 870. Our see it, Say it model also allows us to go specifically to a show since we have the guide information.
Some of the more sophisticated commands are capable, but not coming at launch. CEC is also on the books, and we'll see how that progresses as CEC devices become more common.
The hdmi pass through is a hardware feature that Sony did not copy (at least at launch).
What you suggest could theoretically be done very sloppily if Sony added an infrared blasted to ps4. As soon as it switches inputs though, gone is the ps4 interface and any means to visually get back to ps4.
If Ryse Is A Benchmark For What Xbox One Games Are Capable Of Early On, Xbox One Owners Have Nothing To Worry About.

lol now I love PC gaming, but I don't understand why PC was even brought into this discussion.
This doesn't surprise me especially when Greg Williams General Manager of Xbox Silicon Development said in that video Microsoft purportedly had Engadget pull after the Xbox One reveal: "We purposefully did not target the highest end graphics, we targeted as a more broad entertainment play"

Lol. no. an IR blaster is just a small device that duplicates infrared signals that would usually come from a remote. it plugs into the back of the Xbone, and in front of the IR sensor of whatever device you are looking to control.
It's been in use for decades now with lots of devices and works well. the tech is pretty mature. however it's limited to functions that a standard remote would be capable of.
No he was right. The kinect blasts it off the walls.
That is also exactly what my crappy sony google tv does as well. It does it well too, it's just the rest of google tv that is crap.

I think Microsoft went into designing the Xbox One wanting their own chips and memory architecture (drunk on their own success and not learning the lessons from developer headaches with the PS3), and doubled down on Kinect (which was their focus in the latter part of the 360's life) on the next generation. Microsoft clearly wanted to make a cloud enabled game console with an emphasis on motion controls, TV/DVR, streaming entertainment, and always on sharing. The problem is the hardcore gaming audience largely wanted a gaming console that focused on games first like they did with the 360.
Xbox360 was my primary console this gen, and imo Microsoft missed the mark with the Xbox One. I want this team back:

I'm just going to leave this here.

There's no need to "switch inputs" to your DVR if you're looking to control it via an app. Play game, suspend game, go to app, interact with app (i.e. record x show at x time) close app, post on GAF about how terrible these E3 juniors are, un suspend game.
Or are we no longer using control over IP as the excuse.
Because of a 30 page thread asking where multiplats look better.

As well as confirming the performance gulf between the two consoles, the big one for me was the confirmation MS will be pissed at publishers if they don't gimp the PS4 versions so they're the same as the Xbone. Something that has long been suggested on GAF, but without actual sources confirming it.

I'll probably get crap for this, but when your publication does things like this, that doesn't exactly make you a trustworthy source for this kind of information.

I won't go so far as to suggest that they're being paid, because that's a mighty big accusation to make, but you can't exactly blame anybody for questioning their credibility and motives, if he was even being serious, that is.
Edge is paid by Sony:

No it was after the 180.
Why the hell did MS go for such a solution then? PS3 already showed that developers hate working around not straight forward architecture
Actually I'm fairly certain there is an IR blaster in the kinect and it is WEIRD
While I don't believe everything Albert says I think his posts on kinect ir blasting were likely truthful
They apparently achieved IR blasting from the kinect to devices below it (as what would be needed) which if true is fairly impressive
Of course not sure how well it works
He may as well had said "We purposefully did not want to compete with PS4".
Wasn't Microsoft trying to compete with Apple and Google?

If true...
Between Xbox and PS4 though.
Oh man, the Vita is so awesome.
I don't understand why you think a PS4 would have to be on screen for voice commands to work. the switch input voice command could still be done to get back to PS4. I'm sure the Xbox one will also work whilst the interface is not on screen.
Because of a 30 page thread asking where multiplats look better.
might be for something different? there's a port of the back of the xbox one labeled "IR out" that's distinct from the kinect 2.0.
maybe albert can clarify.

Oh man, the Vita is so awesome.
the or blaster is built into connect camera. That port is for an external booster if the Kinect is not sufficient afaik
Probably the same reason why Nintendo went for a similar setup - GDDR5 is more expensive and the DDR3 and eDRAM/ESRAM combination has lower latency. It's only a 'pain' to work with because it's something new for developers to get used to - programmers are the laziest breed of workers on the planet lol.
Developers so far have done nothing but praise the memory setup for the Wii U, and I expect the same for the One's setup once developers get their heads around it.
I personally think GDDR5 is overkill tbh, the Blu-Ray/hard drive access speeds would, I imagine, negate the extra bandwidth advantage that GDDR5 gives the PS4 somewhat...unless someone with more knowledge than my good self can correct me on that..?

correctamundothat answers my question then.![]()
so the IR blaster is not necessarily plug in, but can be if room size or type is problematic.
Edge have always backed the console they thought would be a winner.

I think everyone on GAF wants that team back. I used to get excited about the 360 watching that. Seeing the members explain the whole design philosophy behind the 360 is something we have yet to really get out of the One.
programmers are the laziest breed of workers on the planet lol.
Yes, but the reason the PC was brought up at all by that poster was, I think, that if multiplat performance mattered as heatedly as it does in here most people should probably look at where it's generally best. We are enthusiasts after all.
I'm just going to leave this here.

single-digit AND at a lower resolution?Well Albert did talk about the difference being "maybe single-digit FPS between the two platforms" and so it looks like this matches with the statement in Edge's article![]()
What is wrong with some of you guys?
Most of the PS4 version of the multiplats will just be developed to get it out of the door, while the xbone version will be optimized like crazy to get it close to the PS4. I'm not ready to say the PS4 will be nerfed, but that could become a possibility with enough $$$.
Ryse performance looks pretty bad though,
