Elden Ring has sold 20 million copies

One of the most overrated game. Bloodborne and Sekiro should deserve sequels, instead we're gonna be getting this shitty open world a sequel, aren't we? Anyway, i will be buying the DLC...

More than deserved.
Superb open world that ignores the norms and still retains its Souls mechanics. These guys are mad genious, can't wait for the DLC.

Toyota sold 87,591 Prius cars in 2018. Since we're just posting random numbers.

I hope this teaches the industry some good lessons about what makes an open world game compelling. Good natural exploration, (mostly) good or at least unique rewards for your efforts, freedom of choice, and less handholding. Can't wait for the DLC.
Those hoping for a return to shorter more focused games are gonna be disappointed....

Hopefully this doesn't give ideas to developers to be purposefully obtuse and cryptic about in-game information to develop a false sense of difficulty.
Its not fun, in any way or shape, to have to look for basic information online about what i'm playing.

I had fun with it and I'm a huge fan of Souls but it was overrated. I wish there was more variety of things to do in the world. A lot of the map was empty wasted space.

Also it was too damn easy. I think I only struggled with one of the bosses.

Hopefully we get some DLC that adds more stuff to the map and has bosses that offer a half decent challenge.

Congrats and good on the studio - but this means another decade of the exact same gameplay all over again.
Hate to say it, but the souls formula got stale even before they found this sales success.
Now its a Madden-like factory of pumping out the same games over and over.

Extremely well deserved. Man, what a treat that game was/is. Had such an excellent time with it. Realllllllllly do hope the DLC rumors are true, that'd be insane.

Well deserved, now bring on the DLC!
Though I must admit it slightly worries me that whatever they do next will be seen as "underpeforming" if it doesn't sell 20 million units in one year. I hope FROM and Bandai keep expectations and budgets realistic for their next game.

RIP well crafted level design and fantastic bosses, say hello to bloated open world with tons of repetition and bland environments. The Soulsborne games had a good run, I guess I'll always have Dark Souls 1 and 3 to look back on

Yep, cant agree more. You going back to play old souls games is a wise choice which is good for you and everyone, and i hope everyone who thinks the same as you should do the same as you did.

Let Elden Ring enjoyers have fun playing new fromsoft games without being bothered by those whinning, obnoxious, annoying, gatekeeping, salty, cynical, no life old souls veterans/purists.

Thank you for your brilliant idea, man!

OMG the hyperbole. Like, I've been playing games for over 30 years, and Elden Ring is one of the finest I have ever played.

Despite all the talk about how overrated the game is, it continues to sell extremely well. 20 million units sold in it's first year. 422 Game of the Year awards so far, beating the previous record holder by 100. The game is still heavily discussed within the gaming community, and the DLC is still not even out yet. By every measure, by every conceivable metric, Elden Ring has been a resounding critical and financial success. One of the best games ever made.

It's always weird to see sales metrics being used to point to the future of trends while ignoring other sales that run counter to it unless people want to see devs try to make everything into a gta V clone.

I'm not even sure how far into this format FS will take their other (or new) IPs going foward.

Morrowind 3.0 looking good sales wise, can't believe people still call the open world design "a revolution" lol

I believe they're doing Armored Core next.

I'm playing this game and it is so good, the exploration is wonderfully crafted and the art makes me think about the Heaven. Amen!

Their next game is literally a high speed flying giant robot game

Thats true and we will see how it turns out. I hope the rumors of it being Souls-like are bunk.

Ive got an overly negative take I guess but Im just tired of the whole 'rest at fireplace - enemies respawn - messages on the ground - enter the myst door to fight boss - summon people - lock on, circle, hit guy in the back' gameplay.
10 years solid of the exact same old shit. Elden Ring's success guarantees many many sequels and years of the same shit.

From Software used to be more varied - dont like to see them bottlenecked.
On the flipside I suppose the success could allow for more chances like Armored Core - or perhaps a new Kings Field?

If From gets $20 per copy that is 400 mil US. that is pretty good. I know it is not all US dollars, many are Euro and Japanese but it is plenty of money to justify Elden Ring Part 2!

Why is this site so focused on sales ? weird

You've only been here 4 years. But that is still longer enough to understand what the site used to be and what it is now.
We still have NPD every month afaik. This site focuses on all aspects of gaming; sales, developing, marketing, etc.

Very happy to see a single player game with only very optional multiplayer succeed like this. It wasn't even on any subscription service where you rent games perpetually.

Huge win for people who want to own their games and have rich single player experiences.

This is how I expected to feel when I saw they were going open-world.

I was wrong and you are too. Elden Ring is the best From game yet and quite possibly my favorite game of all-time depending on the mood I'm in the day you ask.

I stopped playing because I'm bad at commitments and I was getting burnt out a bit but I know I'll finish it. I'll probably start again after I beat Hairy Pooter.

My big gripes have been said before. Constant repeat enemies and caves but there's still a lot of beauty in the game. I stopped at the giant Troll Boss which I feel is a critical moment so I'm sure I'm missing out a lot. I love the gameplay loops of the games but again. I just needed some time away.

You can't compare switch games sales with other consoles games sales.
Poor switch users are so starved for games that they buy anything at any price. Even if the games look like straight up ps2 ports like Pokemon, or are the 24th re-release of the same game they played 56 times like Mario.
Reminds me of this

They worked their way up. It certainly wasnt an overnight success. With each Dark Souls they raised the bar step by step.

Congratulations FromSoftware.. you deserve it..
