Elden Ring on Switch 2 Is a Disaster in Handheld Mode | gamescom 2025 - IGN

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

We played Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition in handheld mode on Switch 2 and came away very disappointed with the game's performance, especially when in the open areas like Limgrave. Frame rate drops were significant when turning the camera whilst exploring outside of the tutorial area, and this, combined with a confusing button layout on Switch 2, made combat confusing and exploration fairly dispiriting. We weren't allowed to record gameplay at the booth, probably due to this fact, but you can hear our thoughts on Elden Ring Switch 2 handheld gameplay in this video. Elden Ring Tarnished Edition releases in 2025, so hopefully there's time for Bandai Namco to work on its performance.

Its fromsoft so 0 surprise here. Nightreign stutters and drops frames like crazy even on my good PC. Dogshit dev team when it comes to game performance and tech

Nintendo Life said the same thing. They also weren't allowed to record any footage. This port is coming in very hot. Hopefully it's still a few months away from release so they can get the framerate stable and this isn't a "push it out and we'll fix it with patches" situation.

I need to see the frame rate because there's a weird trend of leaving unlocked frame rate on the Switch 2 for whatever reason, making it a 35-60 console in some games

the GPU performance of the Switch 2 in handheld mode is roughly between the Xbox One and PS4 (more Xbox One than PS4 probabl). so it is what I would expect, sub PS4 performance.

I mean thats how xbox one s version looks and runs (1,2tf gpu with jaguar cpu and no ssd), switch2 is much stronger and got dlss on top so i still have hope for stable 1080p(dlssed ofc) 30fps, if not at launch then at least after few patches down the line.

Hopefully from is smart and makes switch2 version run stable 30 even if it means running at xbox one settings/resolution(dlssed to 1080p).

Lmao empty open world with ps3 graphics and cant even maintain framerate? I mean, the ps5 version was broken with it's performance on launch (still is? I wouldnt even know, I never installed it again, and stayed on the ps4 version) so this doesnt come as a surprise.

in Elden Ring it's just normal. all current gen versions run fully unlocked. and it's actually better that way, because the alternative would be badly framepaced 30fps, which would also result in stutters

These motherfuckers have been making money hand over fist and they're still doing this. I used to think like hey...awesome and creative AA dev, bless their hearts, I can overlook this ❤️❤️
That's what i was saying in another thread.
From Software has been a AAA developer for a decade now and it's absolutely unjustified to release a game in the state From has been releasing them and in some cases like Bloodborne they never fix them.

The switch to will always be home to these pathetic hand-me-down ports, you might as well stick to whatever is made exclusively by Nintendo as most of the third party Giants will miss the platform or you will get sloppy thirds

I love From Softwares games but I'm starting to get really fed up with the shitty performance that comes with all their games. Demons Souls on PS3 ran like shit. Dark Souls ran like shit. DS2 downgraded and still ran like shit. DS3 was terrible on PS4 dipping in the low 20s quite often. It wasn't until PS5 they fixed performance with a BC patch. Bloodborne is a disaster on PS4. Elden Ring on PS5 was a hot mess and only saved by VRR. Played it on PC and the framerates was all over the place too. Sekiro is the only one I don't remember having bad performance. At least not compared to the Souls-games. They need to be called out on this shit loud and clear, it's gone on for too long now.

Yes, the game that runs like shit on high end PCs and PS5 Pro is not the problem here, the Switch 2 itself is.

Some of you lose all brain cells when it comes to your console warring huh

Seems like the kind of game that could sell for a long ass time on the platform if it was optimized better. GL getting that shit together in time for still launching in 2025.

explains why a release window hasnt been properly announced.

Considering the shitshow of optimization that went on for consoles in general, Handheld mode should have just been the xbox one settings

Not surprising. They've been patching that engine since Dark Souls. Time to learn to code properly now boys!!
Or outsource them to blueprint, I'd argue they out-souls'ed the creator of souls
Someone should step up and take his place. I'd volunteer but i lack his talented ability to write well formed articulate sentences. A true wordsmith he is.
I'd offer since I'm a Nintendo apologist, but I'm nowhere close to that level of derangement degree

Valve stepped in to get Elden Ring to work on the steam deck, I'm not expecting the switch 2 port to be any good.

it's not so much that they stepped in, and just that their shader precaching system allowed the Deck to at least not have shader stutters. it still doesn't run amazingly well on it in demanding spots.

Really?! I'm extremely surprised! 👀

I don't think this game was ever going to look or perform well on Switch unfortunately. From Software are pretty shite from a pure technical standpoint.

I expect the switch 2 to have less third party support then switch 1. Can't even imagine a game like monster hunter wilds or dragons dogma how attrocious it would be.
