ELDEN RING | Reviews Mega Thread

It's a problem if 99% of reviews are like that yes. This will for alot of people be there first FromSoftware game so some reviewes should cater to them.
pretty sure whoever was interested in from software offering already purchased at least another soul game..and the rest already knows what those games are all about..this is not exactly an obscure genre anymore.

if someone doesn't like the genre is not gonna like the game even if it's good ,much like i don't like stealth so i would review with a meh most mgs, despite their qualities.

meanwhile people that know the genre can recognise if something is lacking

Wow, I was expecting favorable reviews based on impressions, but that's a pretty insane average score.

Watching some reviews, it's interesting how some call this the easiest of the Souls games, while others say it's the hardest. It seems the open world nature and optional encounters from which you can flee/avoid opens up opportunities to make this game as easy (or difficult) as you want it to be. I was going to give it a shot anyway as the art style and gameplay looks to resonate with me more than the others, but as a guy who has never taken to FromSoft games, that's reassuring to hear.

after reading all the reviews, the game is Dark Souls with a Breath of the wild style of open world, which is fantastic because everyone else does the ubisoft open world.

I'm curious how the high difficulty effects exploration.

I kind of feel I'd be more hesitant to explore, to look around that last dark corner, follow that faint sound in the distance, if there's a very big chance of dieing and incurring some (usually considerable) penalty.

I haven't read any review, preview or anything whatsoever, so maybe death works entirely different to souls. Or maybe they have solved it some other way. Or maybe they haven't. But I'm a bit wary

He actaully has a point most games get whatever reviewer the outlet can find and you get terrible reviews like this

oof that KH2 review was hard to watch.

I appreciate he's trying to convey how someone new to the franchise might experience the game, it's a valuable insight, but not for a review.

ANYWAY,
who cares!, can't wait to infinitely frustrated at my own incompetency for the next few weeks :D

Looking forward to playing it considering I liked the first half of Dark Souls 1. But very few of the reviews I've read reflect the score. Most of them say the game reuses a bunch of enemies, places and mechanics, doesn't innovate much and is buggy, yet ends the review with 9/10 or 10/10 scores.

I remember reading Mario Odyssey reviews (similar scores, overrated imo) and reviewers were saying how they got up mid game and actually clapped... Not to mention how everyone creamed their pants over BotW. Elden Rings reviews in comparison read like a high 80s game, but nobody actually gave it a low score because they don't wanna appear like chums who can't handle difficult games.

So, it’s alright then? 😂

Amazing reviews. Not all that surprised.

A lot of non Souks fans are going to fall into the hype and bounce off this hard though.

Cannot wait to get into it and explore.

I dunno, this could be the one. I have at least 4 friends who are using this as an(other) attempt to get into Fromsoft games because they're keenly aware that it'll probably be the most accessible one yet. It's not like Sekiro where you can get hardstuck on one boss and have no other route to progression. Hope this lands with people and inspires them to challenge themselves further with the other titles.

I just don't believe this is the case if ER reduces the corpse walk time in the way that other reviews describe. That alone will be enough to stop many people from quitting. Some of the corpse runs in Dark Souls were awful.

The 1-10 scale in game reviews is broken, I get that, but when you already know that and factor it in to scores, it doesn't make a difference. If all reviewers magically agreed to properly use the 1-10 scale rather than "7 is average", then your problem would be that too many games scored above a 90 rather than a 95, or something similar. It would just scale.

Again, most of the top games not having any low scores is not bullshit, it's just maths. The reviews are only done by a few dozen people, not the millions that actually play the games. Eventually, you are always going to get a very select few games that 100% of a few dozen people thought were at least an 8 or whatever. The odds aren't even that crazy, it's almost impossible to avoid and it would be incredibly strange if that never ever happened.

User reviews may be able to give you a "better" result by providing thousands of ratings, but the problem then is that most of those "reviews" are either 0 or 10 depending on the user's preferences. People put stock in critic review aggregates because the user reviews include... these people.

When that's the alternative, critic scores start to look like a better guideline, even if you don't always agree with them.
Maybe your right but the issue seems to be more common with videogames than with films where scores seem to be far more varied that they calculate the Metascore differently.

I personally think it would be less of an issue if average metascores came down ( which they appear to be) because that would suggest (but not guarantee) more diverse criticism.

Anyway I ve said my peace and I still hyped as fuck about elden ring and I don't want to piss on anyone else excitement.

Have a good one👍

I think a case could be made for Elden ring where it expanded the scope of the game to a grandiose scale without sacrificing the core concepts and mechanics that made people fall in love with the soul series in the first place.

Where breath of the wild expanded the scope of the game while at the same time sacrificing the stuff people love about zelda games; Elaborate dungeons, unique bosses etc.

Bloodborne with it's fast-forward combat and no shield - really? What's next, she's going to recommend Sekiro?

Right? If anything recommend the Demon's Souls remake, it might be stuck on a platform that's still hard to get but it has to be the easiest of the bunch as far as I'm concerned.

I was just thinking it really wouldn’t surprise me if Sony announced an acquisition within the next few months.

I honestly think, Miyazaki is gonna take a well deserved break after this. I think it’s probs gonna be supported for years with dlc and it looks to be his greatest work of everything the team has worked towards for 12 years.

wouldn’t surprise me if he stepped Away for a bit but what do I know lol.

I don’t think Sony would make them exclusive anyway, there’s far too much of a PC crowd for fromsoft games.

I would say Dark Souls 1 is probably the best entry point. Demon's Souls was very much a prototype of the genre + world tendency was a mindfuck to wrap your hear around.

People keep responding to my comment like I'm hating on Horizon because their jimmies got rustled. I bought Horizon on launch, played it a few hours and jumped right back to BotW. Tried a few times again over the years but never could get into it.

Bought it again on PC thinking maybe it was the framerate. Nope, still bored. It's beautiful to look at, but the world felt sterile and flat compared to BotW.

Didn't even bother with Forbidden West because I knew Elden Ring would probably do the same thing. Seems I'm right.

Thanks for this.

What resolution did you use on your 2070 Super PC?

1080p. There seem to be GPU usage issues (80% or below). The game has sudden FPS drops due to that problem. I hope they fix it with the day 1 patch (although the review version is already 1.01).

DS1 was mine, but you have to contend with O+S who make up one of the hardest fights in franchise history IMO. Then again, I only did that fight once before I beat any other From game, so maybe not. I still think they're harder than anything in DeS though, flamelurker is as hard as that game gets and it's still only one dude.

Alanah Piece saying that the game isn't any more accessible than previous Souls games just because you can teleport away from bosses. She may have realised what a crock of shit that is.
Brad at EZA said its the hardest one and he's a souls master. Odd statements all around 🤔

I didn't actually read/watch any full reviews to avoid spoilers, so I don't know, but Brad is probably approaching the game in a no-nonsense way that a Souls vet would - probably not using broken magic and summons. Elden Ring appears to be accessible because of the amount of options newer players would use to make the experience easier.

No, it's consistent. It's accessible in that you can avoid encounters you cant beat and over level yourself rather easily but the actual fights themselves are hard especially the stuff past the first few areas. Some borderline cheating according to the ign review.

Agreed but they do exist they are a minority and ideally some of them should review From games.

True but I believe on average they will be more favourable.

I do! If you don't that's cool however at some point you weren't a fan until you played the game and then you were so it's nice to have new comer perspective or someone that didn't like there games in past. This could be positive for the game if people who didn't like the previous games enjoyed this game.

True but if its your job then tough we all have to do things we don't like sometimes and you would be providing a valuable review.
Disagree. It's completely counterproductive to put non fans/non interested people to review a game they don't like. What would be the purpose of that? New perspective? Nah
One thing I dislike.

I saw this a lot with previous From Software titles and Japanese RPGs, that when sites review then, they put the resident "specialist" on them.

The people who reviewed games like Persona 5 or Dragon Quest were all the resident waifu/anime-obsessed fanboys who loved long-drawn-out JRPGs. With FromSoftware, is always the big Bloodborne/Dark Souls fans who review these games.
as they should. No point in putting people that don’t like the genre/games to review them.

At just 1080p?

Well... Shit. I think this is definitely a direct steam purchase so that I can refund if it runs like ass on my machines.

Impressive. Could be the highest rated game I never play.

I will have to watch to gameplay videos, but I did not like the Souls games or anything else the developer has made, so I doubt I would like this. But you never know.

I played Bloodborne as my first souls games and I went through most of the bosses in 1 try and I thought Demon Souls was more difficult... I did beat quite a few of those bosses first try too though.

HELL NO!! Hollywood or Western companies better not get their grubby hands on From Soft.....don't want to see their woke shit stained this excellent Japanese developer

And as far as Sony, they got a chance to buy From Soft in 2014. FS was on sale back then when they were working exclusively with Sony for Bloodborne, but Sony didn't do shit

If anything, I want to see Nintendo buying them from Kadokawa
Imagine if Nintendo buys From, they ll be using this 20 years old engine for more 20 years, like gamefreak

I'm really starting to worry about this game being too easy I already see how the bow might be OP as hell.
