Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Cmdr Iced_Eagle, ready to rock!

Can't wait to go home, set up the Rift and load up E:D! Amazing how big this patch is too. I've been playing since the alpha, and it's been amazing to watch how far they've progressed, and the speed at which they've done so.

I was gonna hold off on this since I already had Star Citizen but now I need this in my life. What flight sticks are you guys rocking? I'm in the market for a new one at the moment with a budget around £150-£200

Dude add me! Cmdr Miyamoto Musashi
I swear I won't shoot you!!

Are you Backer #45525?

Because that's what comes up when I search your name, new name change going through?

I think I missed where to set a commander name. Where do you do that?

Shameless copypasta from the ED forum:

1. Login at: https://support.orerve.net/
2. Navigate to the ‘COMMANDER PROFILE’ tab
3. Enter your desired new commander name in the ‘Request a New Name’ field and press the ‘Request Name Change’ button.
4. If this is approved it will update the commander name at the top of the page.
5. If it is automatically denied a red message will appear above the field, stating the reason for the rejection.
6. If it is manually denied the player will receive an email telling them that their name has been rejected, once the batch update is complete.

The support site is down at the moment though.

Got in briefly, docked first time, no scrapes, watched someone with the control grace of a elephant attempt the same on the pad next to me fail, and explode.

Jaw is aching and is currently a trip hazard.

Oh my, once the servers settle down this is going to be monumental.

I need to check. At work. Lol sounds about right. I changed it like 3 days ago.

I am laughing.. I really don't get it. Sidewinders are easy to dock. The hard ones are big ships like Lakons.

I have yet to buy the game, i've read the enormous patch notes and i am wondering how much content there is really in the game right now.

I mean if i log on multiplayer, what can i actually do except dock and undoc from the city and explore empty solar systems ?

There's a shitton. Buy it. It's amazing. Also, you're another person I can shoot, uh... I mean help. Yeah... That...

haha, yeah.... i am watching streams and nobody actually did any content except setting up control and crashing in the city.

The wonders of docking!!! It's a fun mini game where death lurks closely.

Even more when you're a giant hunk of metal and a sidewinder tries to squeeze through the airlock with you and said sidewinder explodes because all their power was on weapons and engines. Its really wonderful...

I guess its way too early to know, but how much of a value do you guys think the lifetime expansion pass is? Like, are they only gonna put out $60 worth of expansions, or is paying $50 now potentially going to save me $300?

Their planned expansions include:

Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players

Up to you to decide if that's worth 50 bucks. For me, I've enjoyed the game in Premium Beta and the Lifetime Expansion Pass was a no-brainer.

Wow. What an experience. First time using a flight stick (HOTAS), first time docking, first hyper space jump...

Blew me away. Can't wait to play more.

(really pleased myself docking manually first time without fucking it up, including asking permission!)

Love this so far.

Wait till someone intentionally rams into you while docking. It'll happen. Unfortunately..

Best exit from Frameshift for me so far: 19km to station.

That's not too bad is it?

(Worst, 129km lol)

Can you guys check if the other forms of AA are working now? In PB I was able to max everything out at 1440p, but was limited to FXAA since that was the only form of AA working. I'm hoping MSAA has been implemented in this version.

Their store won't let me buy with my bank card. :/

Use Paypal.

Just did some delivery missions. Its pretty fun, jumping around, making pit stops at stations to refuel, running away from interdictions!

I think they added normal wear and tear on the ship as well, hull dropped 2% over the course of an hour and I'm pretty sure I didn't hit anthing.. too hard haha

Is a Joystick required for this?

A long time ago, in the age of old space sims like the first elite and even up to freelancer I used to always sing the praises of Joysticks. Now? Unless you really want to toss away 100 bucks I'd stick with the tried and true 360 controller. It simply is a wonderful controller. If the DS4 ever gets real PC support then the 360 pad has some competition, but honestly it's just a fine piece of equipment.

I have no doubt that, perhaps, someone with an Oculus Rift would have some advantage over those not using it. I am skeptical, at best, that a Joystick brings any kind of advantage over a 360 controller.

Someone with a HOTAS has access to more buttons. These buttons can be pretty damn helpful and give a HOTAS user an advantage.

Add the Oculus Rift and there's even more of an advantage.

The 360 controller implementation is wonderful, mind you.

I have 30 something buttons mapped *without* shift, 3 analog controls I can use without hindering access to said buttons (that is, I don't need to take my hands/thumbs off of them to press buttons at the same time), and a larger throw on analog axes for finer analog control. It's not some crazy "you are dead if I see you" advantage over gamepad players, but there absolutely is a significant advantage. I'm sure there will be extremely deadly gamepad players, but they'll be overcoming inherent control disadvantages.

Just played for the first time. I started a solo online game, docked at a station, and was so impressed I immediately shut the game down.

I need to experience this first in the DK2. Mine should be here tomorrow.

Gonna get a list going so we all can add each other. Feel free to add to this list. I'm gonna try to periodically update it.

You can have a billion buttons mapped. It's almost completely irrelevant. The 360 pad has 4 analog controls(two sticks and two triggers) if you really want to get into it, but still that's besides the point. The controller has more than enough buttons to map everything you need for combat onto it. This isn't an NES pad, I have 16 buttons on command, more if I set up shift states. Sure some ancillary functions I'll need to map to my nostromo or keyboard, but for 19 bucks, and something most people already have, it's easy to make a case for it. In addition, simple physics would suggest that someone having to move a stick, with resistance, that is several centimeters tall is going to take longer than someone flicking the 360 pad just by sheer amount of mass you need to move.

All control schemes have their advantages and disadvantages, I'm just not one to advocate spending 100+ on Joystick that you will only use in this game, Star Citizen, and whatever Ace Combat or other flight sim you happen to play. That's just far too limited. Think I'll save my 100 bucks, desk real estate, and the real kicker? I can play while reclining on my couch.

HOTAS is just ridiculous. 500 bucks? One would damn sure hope it was significantly better. Although 17 action buttons vs 16 doesn't speak volumes in terms of value per dollar spent. Sounds suspiciously like overcompensating to me. Also called paying to win. If you have to drop over half a grand in a game just for some, arguably small, advantage to help you win then so be it. Certainly won't bother me. If you are spending 500 bucks on that you are sorely lacking in the imagination necessary to spend money properly.

*Installs the beta*
*Run in a rush without checking or knowing anything*
*Remember that never was a good idea in the other Elite*
*Ships goes bang in 5 min*

Glorious, some things never change haha. Now I'm forced to take a free Sidewinder. Will try some hours after so I can learn the ropes in a proper way.

In order to use any more than *4* of those buttons, you have to release one of those 4 analog controls. Unless you're using some absurd, esoteric, ergonomically atrocious claw grip. More power to you.

It's not about speed. Flight/Space sims in general are not about how fast you can go from one extreme to the other because how fast you pitch or roll or yaw is limited by the physics of the craft you're piloting. What is important is having fine control over just how much you are pitching, rolling, and yawing. Having a larger range of motion lets you do that with more precision.

This sounds like people saying you need to spend $10000 on a PC for games. While Thrustmaster has trademarked it, it only refers to the combination of a Joystick and Throttle unit. These exist for under $100. I certainly don't have a Warthog.

Also, that is the most inane attempt at insulting a group of people I've seen on the forums in a long time. Sorely lacking in the imagination necessary to spend money properly? What is that even supposed to mean? What does someone's imagination have to do with how they spend money on their silly video game habit? Are you jealous? Why does this seem to bother you significantly more than it would a rational human being?

Holy shit. Another bug. Station disappeared on me. First time that's ever happened.

Along with that, I'm getting weird instances where the game doesn't realize I'm at 0 throttle and I'm still going.

Edit: crashed afterwards.

I think I am starting to figure things out. I can supercruise without missing my destination by a few light years.

Tomorrow my goal will be to make some money. I need a new ship bad!

My wife is going to be an Elite widow.

Gone 4am, I should sleep... utterly impressed, even with the bugs.
