Elon is Time's "2021 Person of the Year"

Some Americans are gonna go down kicking and screaming before they drive an electric vehicle. Gonna be a generational and possibly regional divide before true widespread adoption. Still, its great what Tesla has done at making them mainstream.
A lot of people cant even do EVs even if they wanted to.

- Apartment/condo owners where the board doesnt allow charging stations, or only have a couple community chargers for 300 cars
- People with street permits (no garage)
- People with a garage but cant park in it as they use it for storage (especially people with single car garages)
- People with no garage
- The selection of EV vehicles is pitiful, and they are all super expensive
- In Canada, the cheapest EV car is $40,000 and the range is only 200 km

All of this will change when there is no choice and cities wake the fuck up and fix their regulations. So by 2030 maybe.

Innovators and bright minds are the people who carry us into the future. We ride their coattails. Musk is one of many, but they all should be respected a great deal.

You don’t have to like Musk, but those who can’t respect him or credit what he’s accomplished just refuse to because they don’t like his politics. That’s all it comes down to.

Personally, I think he’s refreshing. He’s a CEO who says whatever the fuck he wants and is one of the few who doesn’t relegate themselves to cliches and towing the company line. He gives zero F’s, has fuck you money and he acts like it. Much respect to Musk.

And he’ll probably be a major factor in reversing global warming at some point.

Still wont lower the prices. I can't afford a 40,000 dollar vehicle.
Unless someone wants to peel out money and buy a higher end EV, the range is shit on the cheaper models at $40,000. About 200 km. And that assumes someone gets peak distance out of it according to the specs the car maker says in the brochure. Thats why Tesla is probably the only EV maker that proudly talks distance. The rest of the EV cars (lower end) notice how they never bring up distance.

I couldnt even do a road trip from Toronto to Ottawa (450 km) or Montreal (550 km) without charging up twice. Ridiculous. I can get to Montreal with my gas car in one shot. Gas up a full tank in town and make it back. With these low end EVs, if I did a trip to Montreal, I'd have to find a charger in probably Kingston, and then charge up again in Cornwall. And then finally get to Montreal.

Some road trip that would be.

I guess I can do a one way trip to Buffalo for 150 km and find a charging station there.

Right there with you. Been living off the benefits of a solid used car for about a decade now with 3 different Hondas.

Here lately I could afford to get a bit more if I wanted, but I refuse to blow money on a "new" car when I can continue to get a solid as hell car for 15-20.

Its funny to see the old guard going from ignoring him and Tesla to sucking up to him.

And even copying his Twitter style. 😂

The guy made electric cars viable.
Did he? We had EVs capable of 50miles since the 1950s. He "paid" to be part of a "new movement", kicked both Tesla Founders out and launched a 1st gen roadster into space ... a car meant for one of the two original founders.

Elon did nothing but write code for Zip.com and nothing else. He tends to buy his way through, being it Tesla, Tesla Roof thingy, Neurolink etc.

Created reusable and affordable rockets
Did not research further, but SpaceX is undergoing some financial problems. No wonder, when you blow up 100+ each costing easily 10 millions (just a guess). Now he wants rich fucks to

a) get fit
b) buy an astro-suit that fits them
c) pay the ticket
d) board a rocket ship and
e) travel to China in under 30min ... because rockets are so fast.

He‘s providing internet to ever corner of the planet
We had Space Internet since the early 2000s via viasat, and its euro equivalent. His plans are to send 50,000? starlink sats (up to 600km) .... when the "normal height operation" for these type of sats. is around 20,000m.

The farther away = less sats. you need to cover the planet
The closer = more sats you need, hence alos the "great speed"

Im not sure, if sending 50,000 starlink sat. to "whatever its called stratosphere, 600km high" is a good idea.

A) they deterioate over time and will need to be replaced
B) there is a huge change them colliding with each other, should that happend ....
C) astronomer hate Elon
D) 50,000 satelites in space, how much will that cost? what are the upkeep for 50,000 sats. + employee + maintenace?
E) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kessler_syndrome

The only good thing coming from Teflon, is lying, deceiving people (Automonous driving is easy 2016, every Tesla is L5 ready, yada yada). Buying a $100,000 EV car is not the smartest way to reduce CO2, NoX etc. They had to throttle P85 Model S because of huge fire risk, now instead of charing at 100kWh ... they only delieve half or even less.

I do wonder why he bought tons of cobalt from a dubios company as Glencore. They´re all bunch of liars. Where is the semi truck shown 2016? Where is the Cybertruck also shown years ago ... what happened to the boring company, solar roof ...

You´re being fooled. If you want, you can spend $10,000? for a beta software and test drive the autopilot, incapable even of L2 autonomy (no car can). Add those random "panthom breakings" ... that have not been solved since 2012.

He is prolly surviving by selling CO2 certificates to other car manufactures. He talks a ot and does not deliver (except for the Model 3). And now he wants everyone to have a chip implanted into the brains, build humanoids ...

It's funny because I remember just a few years ago, it seemed like universally people we're fawning and idolizing him and how he was going to save the world. Also another thing specifically was how Tony Stark was inspired by Elon Musk. And I remember thinking that's so stupid wasn't Iron Man/Tony Stark created long before Elon Musk was even a known person. And I thought what is with this weird obsession with him he's just some company exec.

Then slowly through osmosis see a few quotes here and there. Then get curious enough to watch some video, then a tech talk, then interviews. He really is an exceptionally unique individual the way he thinks and speaks is really quite profound but simultaneously silly with memes, flames throwers and cybertrucks. Now it's like things have reversed while I now see him in a positive light, it seems like the crowd has turned negative towards him mostly based on false premises or because his wealth. It's almost a perfect correlation, as his net worth has increased the number of haters has also increased.

Bollocks. He just made a popular brand akin to Apple (only far fewer people can afford the products). He was a first mover, but hardly 'made them viable'.

Other, established companies, were in the EV game well before Tesla. Almost all of them didn't capitalise on their positions, but their products worked.

And EV technology has advanced, but really not that much.

Lessons not learned.
Imagine comparing Elon Musk to that scam artist.

Also after all these decades people still misunderstand the "person of the year" award. It's not "best person of the year", not even close. It's about who had the most impact on the world.

Imagine comparing Elon Musk to that scam artist.

They are about equal on delivering on their high-order claims. Tesla's FSD which is the company's lynchpin is a con roughly comparable to Theranos' Edison in that they'll ultimately be unable to deliver the product as promised. I'd happily wager that no Tesla vehicle on the streets today will ever do L5 autonomy in the vehicle's lifespan.

Theranos never delivered a product and was inherently never able to deliver what it promised.

Tesla has been delivering product for over ten years now. SpaceX is also generating billions in revenue and did some revolutionary stuff like reusable rockets. Cherrypicking L5 autonomy being late and saying "see, Elon is like Elizabeth Holmes" is very disingenuous.

No scam is ever 100% a scam. Theranos actually did some basic blood tests. Enron actually traded and produced energy. Tesla actually sells cars.

Saying that that they won't be able to deliver on their FSD promises isn't "cherrypicking" when the entire company has a $1T valuation on the premise that FSD is something that's just around the corner and will be a complete step function in transportation, something which Musk continually gaslights. Without this they're just a Subaru-sized niche automaker.

Theranos faked a product. Enron faked its accounting. None of that applies to Tesla.

I remember Forbes or Fortune claiming Enron was the 7th best company to work for in the US.

(You realize he comparison you just made?)
I'm liking him more I see him. I dont care about EV cars one bit, but I like how he doesn't take shit and hits back on Twitter.

@Ionian - Who hits back on Twitter? Kanye, failed artists of medium EG: Rap/ Pop/ Pseudoscience/ conspiracy theorists and even the most popular one, 'fake news'. The standard tweet holds no credence when it comes to pier reviewed relevance for anything important.

@Ionian That shit gets published with extensive references for a reason. Anyone who went to college knows that from day one.

(He can afford to, he could spout any old shit like the Mars project and most people just yawn).

Granted he does get out of line sometimes (like calling the rescue guy a pedo or dicking around hinting Tesla would get bought out), but it looks like he and Tesla dont take shit from anyone.

- Makes him a rich asshole that can afford to do it and get away with it with money.

And thats what business should be. Dont bend over and take a pepperoni stick up the ass because 0.01% of people complain.

How much money can you afford this post bro, where did 0.01% come from? You *gasp* making shit up? C'mon bro, lay on those facts thick and heavy. Spoil the uneducated with your reality. Do it.

I'd like it if more execs were down to earth. I'm not saying slum it like a slob as every worker should have a minimum amount of professionalism, but CEOs dont have to be suit and tie boring guys. People see through that. Hell, chill out and chat with execs in their office or at a pub during an off site meeting and most are totally chill men and women just like everyday people. But they got to force upon a fake image. Musk doesnt seem to do that. He is who he is.

Uh-huh. What was the thread earlier about "sweet summer child"?

Now; as a fan-boy. Try listing his false money-losing promises and his shady tactics.

Not saying others don't do the same but you gotta admit he constantly makes shit up with unreliable delivery dates. He's known for great ideas but the money comes from majorly where?

- Investors that can flip stock?
- Vaporware.
- IDEAS. All about the ideas, man. Shit the dude was balding and has a full head of hair now and named his child something stupid just because he could, no logic involved. (Other than the name).
- His employees love his approach. The management, not ground-staff.

Worst part, he can't even smoke a spliff properly on Joe-Rogan. He constantly trolls and gets richer because of it. He is the definition of an extremely smart grifter.

Then again she looks like a skeleton and he has armour on. I'd say the helmet probably saved his ear drums from the auto-tune ear-rape she always uses. My pisses are more melodic (and need no hard auto-tune unless it's the morning).

I listened to shit dance music on drugs as a teen but I think I'd accidentally OD on something to try to drown that out. Truly awful and plain. First (and only listen) I counted 5 in the chorus. All auto-tuned easy notes, normalized and compressed. Could make that shit in 20 minutes including mixing if you used presets on an old laptop. I would love to see her pre-nup out of sheer morbid curiosity. I'm sure the kid plays a part but simply what she receives herself.

Free electric beta Tesla each year but must complete a survey after several months for a signed contract of ownership.

If you do frequent road trips, these cars probably aren't for you. But I think most people would do just fine with a daily driver with a range of 200km provided they have a place to charge it at night.
There are newer cars coming into the $40k price range that will have 300-400 km range. Even now you can get a Hyundai Kona or Kia Soul EV in that price range with a 400+km range.

I can remember during the depths of covid hell I was pretty depressed with where humanity was going. I had also personally lost a lot of things. BUT watching SpaceX's resupply to the ISS inspired me. And even if Elon proves a total douchebag in the end, at least he gave me that wonderful little piece of hope.

Now it's time for the James Webb telescope next year. I'm praying for its success!
