Elon Musk Says Tesla Model 3 Will Cost $35,000 Before Incentives

Awesome. My pie in the sky dream is to make sure that the next car I buy is an electric one, and the car after that is autonomous.

This is a damn good dream. I'm hoping the same. Planning on getting a new car in 2016 or 2017, so this seems like the most likely candidate.

You might get both in a Tesla. Model S currently has some kind of auto pilot thing going on...

Bolt looks like a $10,000 car but with electric. Surprised a huge company like GM that will sell a decent amount of those can't get it lower than $37k.

That's quite a trick considering that the cheapest car starts at $12,000.

What are the chances there will still be tax incentives for electric cars in 2017/18?

I'm a few months from paying off my Fusion. If I bank what I'm saving in payments for two years I'd be in good shape for one of these, assuming they're available.

Chances are good. The tax rebate runs out for a manufacturer once the sell 200k EVs in the US. I'd guess Tesla is around 100-150k EVs sold in the US by the end of 2017.

I want Model 3 to be my next car, but backorders mean even if I order it when it hits production in 2017, I'll have to wait in line for at least a year right?

I'd assume preorders will start when the reveal the prototype in 2016. If you don't get in quickly it wouldn't be unthinkable that you would have to wait a year.

No way these could work in an environment like MN.

Plus the country with the most Model S' in Europe is Norway.

Tesla is a roller coaster stock. If you pay attention to it, you can make a lot of money by constantly buying and selling it when it hits those ups and downs.

Timing the market is almost impossible, but maybe you can do it!

I want this car but as long Texas protects those innocent billionaire car companies I won't be able to without a huge premium to get it from another state

You can still order online and have it delivered to you. You just can't purchase it at a Tesla store (gallery) in Texas.

Exactly what I expected.
I'm currently driving an Audi A3 and I'm interested in the new Tesla. Really, really interested.
As much as I admire the Model S, it's not the car that I'm looking for.
But if in <5 years a Tesla 3 with full battery will take me + payload at least 300 km in winter, including mountain roads I'll get one happily.

Would now be a good time to buy Tesla stock?

I have a rule of thumb: buy it if it goes below $200. Sell it if it goes above $240.

I'm on my 3rd ride now. Made something like 30% returns on the last ride. Currently sitting on 19%.

Overall return rate on my TSLA stock is 35%. I think I sold another batch for like 50% returns.

Now is not a good time to buy; I don't see it going much higher before another dip. Could easily dip below $200 on even mildly bad news like Gigafactory or Model X delays.

My Volt lease is up in September of 2017. It would be reeeeally nice if this keeps to schedule. But I gotta stay realistic. May have to pick up a $1000 beater for a few months if it's delayed.

Is Model X coming out before Model 3 confirmed?

Model X is coming out late this year. Model 3 is slated for 2017 with the prototype coming early 2016. It was confirmed a while ago.

Edit - To elaborate a little bit, a big reason for their huge cash burn last quarter was ramping up for Model X production.

And one of the things they're hoping on to get the Model 3 cheaper is the new battery factory through economies of scale. The factory won't come online until 2017.

I would buy it if it could be reliable in -40 weather and a 500km drive to the nearest city. I'd like it to be my first car.

this is on par with something out of children of men

The Avantime was from the future though.

I'll be in the market for a new car in early 2017. I need to find out how to get on their waiting list early...

I believe their justification is that gas taxes are used to fund road and transportation projects; electric car drivers use these roads and skirt the taxation.
Ah right I think I remember hearing that now. Never thought I would see something like this. But here it is.

Yes. Georgia.
Sigh.
I had the same reaction as you no doubt. But I kind of understand. Gas taxes usually go to fixing roads. And with little to no gas, you have the same wear on the road with no "payment" for it.

Of course things probably balance out in other areas, but fat chance laws and tax codes will ever be that nuanced and reasonable.

Last I heard, with electric cars there's no manual, as in there's no gears to use. In automatics, the gears change automatically, but here there are none.

Well something has to transmit engine rpms to axle rotation, no? I mean there has to be some sort of transmission. Maybe a fixed gear, but still a transmission.

simplest, and most boring

What? Why? Fuck you, Deal. How much?

I think its 200 bucks. But they used to give you a 5,000$ tax credit. So axing that and charging 200 bucks will help fill a big hole in the state's budget.

It's one of the few things Nathan Deal has done right since he's been in office!

Boring in the best way, as in less likely to fail. I doubt you've driven a Model S, so you have no clue what it's like to drive. Most critically acclaimed car on the road right now.

$5k is a hefty tax credit for a state, but removing the entire incentive is shortsighted. If EVs were a solid fraction of the market, sure, but 1% is still tiny compared to ICEs. They have shot themselves in the foot, most likely, as people will look to defer buying an EV or move to another state with better incentives.

People aren't going to move over this kind of tax. Something is going to change considering the gas tax basically funds road repairs and improvements.

Ok yes, fine, great, the Model S is the most critically acclaimed car on the road. However, this thread is about the model 3. I somehow doubt the model 3 is going to have the same sheer power that the performance model S does, considering it is about 50k cheaper.

Also, for those of us who prefer shifting transmissions and more control over the car, it doesn't matter what acclaim a consumer publication heaps on it. I've got a pretty good idea what it is capable of. Remember that m5 vs. Tesla thread from a couple years back? We argued stats in that one - its got a monster 0-60 thanks to instant torque but in many other performance measures its not all that different from comparable sedans and in some cases, worse. Performance (not fuel economy), control, and physics are what make cars "fun" to drive for most people that care about this sort of thing. Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys have both received accolades in the past as family sedans - that doesn't mean they are all of a sudden fun to drive. Just because a car is reviewed well doesn't mean its automatically all things to all people. Replying with "you dont know what you are talking about, its critically acclaimed!" to a question of whether something is fun to drive or not is not a very good argument to make.

As far as the tax credit goes, people like buying EVs because they like not having to fill up. The state is willing to bet that the tax credit isn't going to deter an EV buyer who likely already has their mind set on one.

And I seriously doubt anyone is going to move out of state simply because of an EV tax. That's kind of crazy.

What i don't understand about electric cars is the monotoneus design and that every manufacturer totally rips off the other ones designs (like the Volt a couple of posts up, it totally looks like the BMW i3) and most electric cars all end up looking the same.

But whatever with cars, i want a electric motorbike - like the HD Limewire <3

i dont understand this either and it doesn't have to be this way. Teslas aren't like that. If they can do it, then so can other manufacturers.

Tesla is indeed nothing like that. But all the other electrics i've seen driving around look alike.

Okay, for a normal car I would agree but how the hell would shifting gears give you more control over something with literally just one gear? It goes forward and reverse. The motor can operate at such high revs that there's no need for multiple gears in the first place.

Also maybe Georgia's legislature should think about other forms of revenue rather than making themselves look stupid. Making people pay a tax for not using gas and helping keep the air a bit cleaner while other states are giving a +5000 dollar credit is the dumbest fucking thing I've heard all day. Yet another reason (of many) why the South is like an anchor while the rest of the country tries to move in a positive direction.

Oh don't worry, they are. For instance, having to pay sales tax on private auto sales now.

Eliminating the EV tax credit is a no-brainer if they believe it won't hurt EV sales. Assuming EV sales stay mostly the same, the state is losing out on a lot of potential revenue.

Gotta do what you gotta do, I get that. But for such an anti-tax part of the country, it just seems a little crazy that the state would TAX EV buyers on top of removing the credit.
