Let's see... my Honda will be ten years old in 2017. Perfect time to get a new car! I’ll also have to buy a house though since I currently live in an apartment and park in an outdoor spot. 2017 is gonna kick ass!

unless the electricity used to charge these cars is from nuclear or renewables... i can't see how this isn't just as damaging to the environment as gasoline

If I see another post like this one more time, I swear to god.
I'm half joking

Here is the long answer: Depending on the state, chances are pretty good that your electricity is already made with renewables. This car is more than likely will only be available first in states with progressive energy policies so chances are good that if you can buy it, you are using reneweables.

Number 2, it is much easier to scrub clean a coal powered plant's local emission than hundreds of thousands of cars. Indeed, most coal and natural gas burning power plants in the USA are already required to scrub thier emissions before releasing it into the atmosphere. We aren't talking about old school industrial age era black smoke stackers here.

Third,it is much easier to put a few coal powered plants offline and switch over to renewables when the time comes versus hundred of thousands of cars.

Has Chevy released the prices yet for the Bolt and Volt 2.0?

Either way, the $7.5K discount isn't off the amount of the car, it's off your taxes. You won't get the "full credit" if you didn't already owe $7.5K+.

Further, it's still $7.5K sitting on your loan.

It's nice that he touts these tax rebates, but I'd rather have $7.5K off the car up front than carry it on a loan.

I think he means that this will require more electricity which needs to be made and he's assuming its from fossil fuels.

Yeah but he's wrong. Power plants run at a much much much much higher efficiency level than a small combustion engines ever could. Then there are places like Seattle where over 95% of the power from the grid is renewable (hydroelectric).

The Bolt is a concept car. GM intends to make it, but no solid details yet. The Model 3 and the Bolt are each at the "believe it when I see it" stage, right now.

The Chevy Bolt is going to be $37,500.

To get that "full" credit, I think a single person with standard deductions will need a 60k+ income.

Further, it's still $7.5K sitting on your loan.

And considering a max of 1 year of interest (~5%) on the 7.5k bundled into the loan, that would be about ~$375.

Not such a large amount. But the problem BamfMeat posted about would be a bigger problem. Considering that a family filing together will need to be close to the $100k combined income to get the full benefit of the credit.

Though if someone is leasing the car, the $7,500 might become a straight discount (I know some people got great deals on NIssan Leaf leases).

Tesla Model S - beautiful

Wow that is a fat bottom she got. I never saw it from this angle... pretty unbalanced line

How long does one of these things take to charge on a normal house supply anyway?

Depends on the size of the battery pack and how much power you get from the plug. With a 240v outlet it takes about 8 hours for a Model S to fill up. The Model 3 will have a smaller pack so probably 6-7 hours. The Leaf and Volt take even less time because their packs are even smaller.

The beauty of the system is you plug it in when you get home and you have a full battery every morning. Tesla even wants to make a cord that will plug itself in, so you won't have to worry about it.

I'll buy one, park it in the street, and run an extension cord out of my front door to charge it. Like planting a giant electric dick in this white trash neighborhood of pickup truck owners.

Thanks. I'm guessing these work best if you have a driveway or garage. Can't imagine most people trailing the cable out across the pavement (sidewalk). :)

The Model 3 will most likely be my next car. At this point I'm just anxiously waiting for them to become available.

Well EM said in the reddit ama that "It won't look like other cars".
Which is really odd, considering that one of the big things they did right about the Model S was to make it look like a performance luxury car, and not some forced-futuristic hey-look-i'm-driving-an-electric-car goofmobile

Toyota, no man. No. NO. ( I know it's hydrogen )

What are the chances there will still be tax incentives for electric cars in 2017/18?

I'm a few months from paying off my Fusion. If I bank what I'm saving in payments for two years I'd be in good shape for one of these, assuming they're available.

I might be able to afford this car if I move home.

Hmm... move home and upgrade car, or live with roommates, and stay with current car...?

I want Model 3 to be my next car, but backorders mean even if I order it when it hits production in 2017, I'll have to wait in line for at least a year right?

The Verge reports that Tesla plans on revealing this car in March 2016:

Seems improbable to me if they don't have an alpha prototype yet, but I dunno - maybe having the Model S and X has streamlined the process some. I'm looking forward to this reveal, this will likely be my next car.

Yeah, they're not gonna have anything ready by then. Just look at how many times the Model X has been delayed.

My guess is you'll have to get in the preorder line when it opens up if you want one anywhere close to the first delivery date (similar to how the Model S was)

I need as many of you guys as possible to buy these so I don't feel bad about buying all the horrible pollution monsters that I've always wanted to own.

I want to wait for the Model 3 to release so it can be my new car but I doubt I can keep my current car running for another 3yrs+.
